A Royal Navy officer was shot dead and another seriously wounded yesterday when a junior colleague opened fire inside a nuclear submarine moored yards from a group of schoolchildren.

The terrified youngsters – aged 14 to 16 and on a visit to the vessel – ran for cover when the shooting broke out.

The gunman, believed to be an able seaman, went on the rampage during a change-over of armed guards at HMS Astute, currently berthed at Southampton docks.

He was overpowered with the help of local dignitaries, including city council leader Royston Smith, who were also visiting the £1.2billion vessel.

The gunman fired six rounds from a pistol before he was overpowered.
