An Ignorant Time

A once-great magazine reflects how far cultural knowledge has fallen.

Last week, newspaper city rooms were alive with the sound of schadenfreude, and Twitterers tweeted about the latest display of ignorance in Time.To watchers of newspapers and newsmagazines, the incident came as no surprise. During the still-young millennium, ad dollars have fled from traditional periodicals to television and the Internet. Result: Shrinking readership, diminished staffs, and outsourced research. In Time’s case, the publication relied on a data-compiling site, the Open Syllabus Project, for a list of the most-read female writers in college classes. Number 97 was Evelyn Waugh. The trouble is, Waugh was a male.

As a former Time reader, for one, and as a former Time writer and editor, for two, I can testify that my colleagues and I were quite familiar with the great comic novelist. We knew no writer sharper
or funnier than Evelyn Waugh when he satirized upper-class excess in Decline and Fall, Vile Bodies, and Black Mischief. The demolition job on the press in Scoop, a dazzling take on Italy’s 1936 war on Abyssinia as seen by a group of mendacious British newsmen, has never been equaled. I wouldn’t hire a writer who hadn’t read Scoop; it remains the manual on the malpractice of journalism across the pond and in the colonies.

For the record, should anyone be taking notes on Liberty Street, Waugh was described by Edmund Wilson as “the only first-rate genius the English have produced since George Bernard Shaw.” (A parenthesis for present-day Time employees: Edmund Wilson was the most prominent American literary critic to work outside the academy, writing on subjects as diverse as trends in current fiction, Freudianism, and the Cold War.) Gore Vidal later cited Waugh as “our time’s first satirist.” (Vidal was a prominent American novelist, playwright, and acidulous political commentator.)

When the dustup hit the Net, one of Twitter’s most popular commentators, Matthew Yglesias, owned up to his ignorance like a man—an unlettered man. ...

Playing with Blocs

Americans shrug that Obama has left the world abroad a far scarier place.
Obama: The Lamest Duck | PJ Media

By Victor Davis Hanson  February 28, 2016

Obama is boxed in a state of paralysis—more so than typical lame-duck presidents.

His hard-left politics have insidiously eroded the Democratic Party, which has lost both houses of Congress and the vast majority of the state legislatures, state elected offices, and governorships. Obama has redefined the black vote, as a necessary, no-margin-of-error 95% bloc majority to offset his similar creation of an increasingly monolithic 65% bloc white vote. We are no longer individual voters, but, in Chicago-politics style, merely faceless “Latinos,” “Asians,” “African-Americans,” “gays,” “women,” and now “whites.”

Obama issues a new initiative—and the nation snoozes. He wastes the day on the golf links—and the nation snoozes. He smear his critics, invites a rapper to the White House whose latest album cover has a dead white judge lying in front of the White House—and the nation snoozes. He cozies up to America’s enemies and snubs our friends—and the nation snoozes. For the nth time, he blusters about closing down Guantanamo—and the nation snoozes. He opens the border even wider to welcome in more illegal aliens and future constituents—and the nation snoozes. Lame duckestry means not even being able to wake up your opponents.

There is so far no Obama legacy, except the creation of Donald Trump, a $20 trillion debt and zero interest rates—and the gift of flat energy prices that came despite not because of Obama’s efforts. Almost every major bureaucracy is awash in scandal or charges of incompetence. The common theme of the disasters at the GSA, EPA, ICE, IRS, NASA, Secret Service, and VA is ideological subversion and ingrained hostility to meritocracy. Would anyone be surprised that another government official pled the 5th, created fake email personas, resigned at 5 PM on a Friday afternoon, declared a foremost mission Muslim outreach, or withheld subpoenaed documents?

Obamacare, borne of rank partisanship and serial mendacity, can survive until 2017, only by bailouts and executive-order manipulations. We now call health care affordable by ignoring the new astronomical deductibles: we pay premiums of $6,000 a year and forget that an annual $4,000 “deductible” ensures no one thinks the real cost is $10,000. Is that a small price to pay to ensure granny has contraceptive coverage?

Dysfunctional Biden Apologizes to dysfunctional Mexico for Trump's True Comments

Biden Apologizes to Mexico for GOP Comments | The Weekly Standard

Feb 28, 2016

CNN reports (who else) that on Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden spoke in Mexico City and
"came close to offering an apology for comments made by Republicans about Mexico and Mexican immigrants on the campaign trail."

"I almost feel obliged to apologize for some of what my political colleagues said," Biden said alongside Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. "It's a heated campaign season and I just want you to know, Mr. President, that the most heated rhetoric you've heard from competitors for the nomination for president is not who we are as the American people. It is not the view that is the view of the majority of the American people. It's the exact opposite. It's the opposite view."

But in 2007, Biden called Mexico a "dysfunctional society."

All the Mirrors Cracked and the Clocks Stopped - the "Honest" Bitch-of Benghazi

By Stephen Green  February 19, 2016 -full short post-

"I don’t believe I ever lied to the public," is what she told CBS News yesterday:

“Well, I have to tell you, I have tried in every way I know how literally from my years as a young lawyer all the way through my time as secretary of State to level with the American people,” Clinton told CBS in an interview Thursday, when asked if she was always truthful with the public.

“I’ve always tried to. Always. Always,” she added.
That's difficult to square with what Jeffrey Zeifman claimed in 2008:
'A lifelong Democrat, Mr. Zeifman supervised the work of 27-year-old Hillary Rodham on the committee. Hillary got a job working on the investigation at the behest of her former law professor, Burke Marshall, who was also Sen. Ted Kennedy’s chief counsel in the Chappaquiddick affair. When the investigation was over, Zeifman fired Hillary from the committee staff and refused to give her a letter of recommendation – one of only three people who earned that dubious distinction in Zeifman’s 17-year career.'

Why?

"Because she was a liar," Zeifman said in an interview last week. “She was an unethical, dishonest lawyer. She conspired to violate the Constitution, the rules of the House, the rules of the committee and the rules of confidentiality.'
Perhaps all that time spent under sniper fire has damaged Clinton's memory.

How American Soldiers Used Pig’s Blood and Corpses to Fight Muslim Terrorism | Frontpage Mag

Before political correctness, our soldiers were free to fight back.

A century before American soldiers fought Muslim terrorism in the Middle East, they fought it in the Philippines. Their attackers were Moro Muslims whose savage fanaticism appeared inexplicable. A formerly friendly Muslim might suddenly attack American soldiers, local Muslim rulers promised friendship while secretly aiding the terrorists and the yellow left-wing press at home seized on every report of an atrocity to denounce American soldiers as murderers whose honor was forever soiled.

Much of what went on in that conflict, including the sacrifices of our soldiers, has been forgotten. The erasure has been so thorough that the media casually claims that the American forces did not use pig corpses and pig’s blood to deter Muslim terrorists. Media fact checks have deemed it a “legend”.

It’s not a legend. It’s history.

The practice began in the Spanish period. A source as mainstream as the New Cambridge History of Islam informs us that, "To discourage Juramentados, the Spaniards buried their corpses with dead pigs."-

Ann Coulter - February 24, 2016 - TALKING HEAD TWIT OF THE YEAR CONTEST

The cluelessness of the GOP pundit class is infuriating, but may ultimately be our salvation. Nothing they say about anything is ever right, even accidentally.

This is making the TV news shows resemble Monty Python's "Upperclass Twit of the Year" contest. The twits don't notice the starting gun, run into one another, fall down, run themselves over with
their own cars and, then, the remaining contestants all shoot themselves in the head.

Anyone who talks about politics on TV isn't going to win them all, but when your horse takes a dump in every single race, week after week, why should we listen to you next time?

If you tuned into ABC'S "This Week" the morning after Trump's tremendous victory in South Carolina, you'd find George Stephanopoulos promising analysis from a "powerhouse roundtable," by which I assume he was referring to the table itself.

He then turned to the sort of clueless morons who have gotten everything wrong for the past seven months so they could tell viewers "what's next."

I've picked these two "Republican strategists" at random for reasons of efficiency, but it could have been any of the Karl Rove-Matthew Dowd-Steve Hayes-Hugh Hewitt-George Will-Rich Lowry dream team.

Why the Bush Dynasty Fell | The American Spectator

Yes, labels are for more than soup cans.

May All Dynasties Sink, They're Downright  UnAmerican!
Earth to GOP Establishment: Do you get it yet?

Jeb Bush has suspended his campaign. And I will say it: Governor Bush is a good and decent man. He fought hard. In this corner I salute him and wish him well.

But if nothing else, the Jeb Bush defeat is a very big moment in the modern history of the GOP. The Fall of the House of Bush (as various headlines would have it) is precisely a reminder of the difference between Reaganites and Bushies. Or, as it were, the conservative base and the GOP Establishment. The other day, as the campaign in South Carolina was winding up, Jeb’s big brother George W. stepped to the campaign microphones, with President Bush 43 reminding audiences of President Bush 41’s saying that “labels are for soup cans.” Contrast with Ronald Reagan’s famous description of Establishment Republicans like the Bushes, with Reagan saying that the moderate GOP Establishment viewed the GOP as a “fraternal order” and a party of “pale pastels” rather than “bold colors.” Understand that key difference, and the reason for the failure of this latest Bush campaign is all too easy to understand.

I have written before about the 1980 selection by Ronald Reagan of George Herbert Walker Bush. Ed Rollins, the former Reagan White House political director who ran the Reagan re-election campaign in 1984 (which improved Reagan’s 1980 record of carrying 44 states by carrying 49 states and coming within 7,000 votes of carrying the 50th — Walter Mondale’s Minnesota), would write years later that when he heard Reagan had picked Bush for the GOP ticket he felt that conservatives had won — and then immediately surrendered the future. That the Bush selection “cut the fuse” on the Reagan Revolution because it set in motion a successor of moderate heritage.

Ann Coulter - February 17, 2016 - G.O.P. BAFFLED AS VOTERS RALLY TO POPULAR CANDIDATE

Donald Trump's latest bombshell, claiming the Bush administration lied about weapons of mass destruction to get us into the Iraq War, is just him doing wheelies on the way to the nomination. He's
apparently decided it would be fun to taunt the entire GOP by demonstrating that he can say anything and his voters won't care.

I wish he'd stop showing off, the little scamp, but maybe the GOP establishment will finally get the message that voters have been waiting a really long time for a candidate who would put Americans
first. Not donors, not plutocrats, not foreigners, and certainly not foreign plutocrats (i.e., Fox News).

Trump is the first presidential candidate in 50 years who might conceivably: (1) deport illegal aliens, (2) build a wall, (3) block Muslim immigration, (4) flout political correctness, (5) bring manufacturing home, and (6) end the GOP's neurotic compulsion to start wars in some godforsaken part of the world.

That's all that matters! Are you listening yet, RNC?

Could Someone Please Send President Obama a Necktie? | PJ Media

By Claudia Rosett February 13, 2016

In such matters as the death of a great man, respect matters -- especially from our political leaders. Dignity and sober ceremony are called for. These are not trivial requirements, nor are they mere accessories to the event.  They are part of the bedrock of enlightened civilization. Surely when America's president appeared before the TV cameras Saturday evening to deliver his scripted remarks about the death of a Supreme Court Justice, the great Antonin Scalia, Obama should have taken the trouble to dress at least as well as your average law student applying for a summer job.

"Louis Farrakhan" Obama - but not this tie
Instead, flanked by the flags that signal ceremony, but dressed-down after a day on the golf course, the top button of his shirt undone, Obama appeared without a necktie.

TV commentators, in their instant reaction, focused on Obama's remarks, which combined a brief eulogy of Scalia with Obama's marker that -- suddenly interested at this late date in the Constitution -- he expects to have the pleasure of seeing the Senate confirm whomever he nominates as a replacement, rather than waiting for the next president.

But to my mind, the real statement was Obama's casual omission of a tie -- with the attendant implications of disregard for his own office, for the Supreme Court, for the American people he was addressing, and for the late Justice Scalia, who was extraordinary above all for his dedication to liberty. Which does not figure large on Obama's agenda.

The Mocking Death of Big Bird

"To Kill a Mockingbird" was a rather obvious, shallow children's book. the themes were perfect for the obvious, shallow, soon to be Hippies, of the Self Involved, Democrat-Social-Justice, Self-Righteous Baby Boomers.

I read the book in Junior High School when I also saw the movie. Both bored me. I found the tomboy Scout, who called her father by his first name, irritating. I also found Atticus boring and irritating. The trial was just another, but lesser irritation, with its  obvious fairytale outcome.

The only act of real consequence by Atticus Finch was to shoot a rabid dog. Still, I will never understand why he didn't just pocket his eyeglasses, which he needed, but interfered with his sighting the rifle, instead of throwing them in the street. Dramatic action I guess, but another source of irritation.

The book leaves one big literary question: Did Truman Capote fix Harper Lee's manuscript so it could get published? m/r

Why Liberals Turned On Atticus Finch: It’s About Ideology, Not the Law | VDARE - premier news outlet for patriotic immigration reform

John Reid  February 19, 2016

Harper Lee’s death is making international headlines, though she is known for only one accomplishment: To Kill a Mockingbird.
The book reinforced the prejudices of the America’s elite and earned Lee eternal adulation by showing a heroic liberal lawyer, Atticus Finch, standing up to the racist, small-minded segregationist South. But last year’s release of Go Set a Watchmen, an earlier draft of To Kill a Mockingbird, tempered the adulation for Finch. As the New York Times notes in Lee’s obituary, “[M]any readers, who had grown up idolizing Atticus, were crushed by his portrayal, 20 years on, as a staunch defender of segregation.” [Harper Lee, Author of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ Dies at 89, by William Grimes, February 19, 2016]
To me, it makes Lee and her most famous character much more interesting.

Government Caused the Most Criminals and Organized Crime! It Still Does and It Commits Most of the Crimes Itself Now!

Prohibition and the Income Tax came out the Progressive Wilson Years. We have a lot of laws and departments that need repealing now: Obamacare, Income Tax, EPA, Dept. of Ed., Dept. of Energy ...
Stop Making Laws, get out of our way and leave us alone! m/r

Articles: Let's Raise a Glass to John J. Blaine

Today marks the 83rd anniversary of the passage of the Blaine Act, which initiated the repeal of Prohibition in the United States.  It makes for a fitting time to recognize that our government is not the appropriate arbiter of morals, no matter how agreed upon those morals may be.

Prohibition came to pass as a result of the crusading Women's Christian Temperance
Union and others who sought to cure society's ills – not through appealing to the better angels of its nature, but through the long arm  of the law.  As a result, the effort largely failed.  It was part of a larger movement by Progressives to end all sort of "abuses" like gambling and drug abuse.  It's no wonder that the Progressives movement of today seeks to combat its pre-conceived societal ills in much the same fashion, be they the internal combustion engine, guns, or 32-oz. sodas.

But surely, you protest, we cannot devolve into anarchy, letting everyone  do as they please, no law to live by, only subtle persuasion.  No, we cannot.  Anarchy, like totalitarianism, has been proven not to work everywhere it has been tried.  So where do we draw the line between which morals to enforce with compulsion and which to enforce with
appeal?  The answer, as is usually the case, rests in the first lines of our Declaration of Independence, which decree that we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable Rights, among them life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (also known as estate or property, if the Lockean origins of the Declaration are to be believed).

This means that my rights to do whatever I want end where the tips of my fingers touch the tip of your nose, or whatever the tips of your fingers have created.  Murder, then, clearly, is an act that government has the duty to prevent.  So, too, are theft, rape, and slavery.  But drinking? Hardly.

Williams College cancels "Uncomfortable Learning" talk by controversial author John Derbyshire - Berkshire Eagle Online

by Scott Stafford   2-18-16

WILLIAMSTOWN — The president of Williams College has ordered the cancellation of a student-organized speaking engagement by an author characterized by many as a white supremacist.

In a letter to the college community on Thursday, Adam Falk said the views espoused in the writings of John Derbyshire have no place in the school's discourse.

"We have said we wouldn't cancel speakers or prevent the expression of views except in the most extreme circumstances," Falk wrote. "In other words: There's a line somewhere, but in our history of hosting events and speeches of all kinds, we hadn't yet found it. We've found the line.

"Derbyshire, in my opinion, is on the other side of it," he wrote. "Many of his expressions clearly constitute hate speech, and we will not promote such speech on this campus or in our community."...
...
In an interview with The Eagle, Derbyshire said he reacted to the cancellation with "a shrug."

"The colleges today are dreadful," he said. "Nothing surprises me anymore. Hence the shrug."

He characterized Falk's statement as full of "empty phrases."

As I always said, the Climate Hoax is not about saving the planet, even if it could be done by the phony Global Warriors. It is all about control, taxes and extracting money! This shyster will get your blood boiling with his plans to use the Climate Scam for extorted "reparations." m/r

Speaking
at the American Constitution Society, leading climate change trial
lawyer Matthew Pawa says that heat waves, melting snow pack, and loss of
glaciers is harming human health and that people and states will want
compensation. Pawa states that thanks to new peer reviewed literature,
climate change litigators can now "demonstrate how much of the carbon
dioxide and methane from the combustion of fossil fuels in the
atmosphere is attributable" to any particular fossil fuel company "going
back to the 1800's."

MATTHEW PAWA: "Global warming litigation is
coming to a court room near you. [...] Damages and injuries are piling
up -- heat waves, melting snow pack, loss of glaciers. ...

DeRay Mckesson, civil rights leaders to meet with Obama - Baltimore Sun

 Contact Reporter  2-17-16

DeRay Mckesson, the prominent activist and late entrant into Baltimore's mayoral race, will meet with President Barack Obama and civil rights leaders at the White House on Thursday for an event honoring Black History Month.
Mckesson, a former school administrator and Black Lives Matter protester who co-founded We the Protestors and Campaign Zero, will attend the meeting along with Al Sharpton, Cornell Brooks, president of the NAACP, and Democratic Rep. John Lewis of Georgia.
A White House official described the meeting as a first-of-its-kind gathering of leaders who represent different generations of the civil rights movement, and said the discussion will focus on criminal justice reform and building trust between police and neighborhoods.

Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch will also attend.

Pope Francis Rips Capitalism, American Immigration Policy at Mexican Border - Breitbart

by Ben Shapiro 18 Feb 2016

Pope Francis, apparently desperate to reach out to the Catholic Church’s growing base in Latin America, spent the day slapping Americans in the face from across the US-Mexico border.

In Ciudad Juarez, one of the most violent cities in the Western Hemisphere thanks to the drug cartels, the pope walked up a ramp covered in flowers toward a cross “erected… in memory of migrants who have perished trying to reach the United States just a stone’s throw away,” according to Reuters.

Funny, he never did that while visiting Cuba to pay tribute to those who died attempting to escape that Communist hellhole. He reserved his spite for a nation with one of the most generous immigration policies on the planet.

Media bias bests big money as top voter complaint | Washington Examiner

By • 2/16/16

Media bias is a bigger problem than high dollar donations for 2016 likely voters focused on the presidential election, according to a new national survey.

Rasmussen Reports found that when asked "Which is the bigger problem in politics today,"
voters picked media bias over money, 47 percent to 45 percent.

What's more, the survey found that voters believe that the media has too much power in politics. Some 66 percent said it was too powerful, compared to just 26 percent who said the media wielded just enough influence in the election.

Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela: Politically Incorrect

By Josh Gelernter — February 13, 2016

Whom would our undergrads revile if they knew a bit more history?

“The black is indolent and a dreamer; spending his meager wage on frivolity or drink,” said Che Guevara. He added that members of the “African race” had “maintained their racial purity thanks to their lack of an affinity with bathing.” After the Cuban Communists took over, Che promised that they were “going to do for blacks exactly what blacks did for the revolution. By which I mean: nothing.”

Pat Caddell: Hillary Clinton Email Scandal ‘Worse Than Watergate’

by Charlie Spiering 13 Feb 2016

Pollster Pat Caddell, also a former adviser to President Jimmy Carter, asserted that the Hillary Clinton email scandal is “worse than Watergate.”

Long the pinnacle of modern American political scandal, Nixon resigned after he was connected to the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters.

“This is the greatest scandal in the history of the United States,” Caddell said. “They all ought to be indicted. This is worse than Watergate.”

Clinton, he explained, would soon be exposed for using her connections in the State Department to enrich her family, her foundation, and her supporters.

“They were selling out the national interests of the United States directly to adversaries and others for money,” he said. “There is just nothing that satisfies them. They are the greediest white trash I have
ever seen.”

Articles: Islam: The Jinn is out of the bottle

By John Griffing  2-13-16

Europe is on fire, in a social and financial crisis of its leaders’ own making. Its public places are now spectacles of the obscene, and its women are sexual objects for a predatory race of invaders. Its social systems are stretched to the breaking point by belligerent "refugees" who are devouring their host countries at will, while Europe’s leaders defend the invaders and blame their own citizens.

Western civilization is under attack, and rational citizens are at a loss to understand why their leaders are allowing the destruction of their societies.

Much has been written about the outrageous acts that have been committed by Muslim migrants, so we need not repeat them here. We can simply agree that the situation in Europe is disastrous, and it’s getting worse. And America is not far behind.

Western leaders are aiding and abetting this insanity with a consistency and single-mindedness of purpose that can only be explained in one way: they must think they have something to gain from the chaos created by this crisis.

What other conclusion can be drawn from the brazen ascendancy of Islam in the western world, and the deafening silence that permits its success? Clearly, Western leaders think they can use Islam for their own ends, to consolidate their own power.

MILO: Twitter 'Embarking on a War Against Conservative Points of View' - Breitbart

by Breitbart Tech  12 Feb 2016

Speaking with host and Breitbart News Executive Chairman Stephen K. Bannon on Breitbart News Daily, Breitbart Tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos discussed the suppression of conservative voices by Twitter on the social media platform.

“Why are you beating up Twitter, and why are you saying that Twitter trying to suppress conservative voices, and why is Twitter’s stock in a total free fall because Milo’s taking them on?” Bannon asked. “Are you a bigger, badder guy than Jack Dorsey?”

“Yeah, of course I am,” Yiannopoulos replied mischievously. “I’m absolute convinced that Twitter is embarking on a war against conservative points of view, a war against what we might call ‘Generation Trump,’ the dissident, mischievous voices of the new counter-cultural alternative right wing and libertarian youth.”

“Look at who Twitter employs,” he warned in reference to Twitter possibly influencing the 2016 presidential election. “You know, this guy used to work with Hillary, this guy used to work with Obama…”

The Onanist's "Nobel Prize" and Islam's Coming "Night of the Long Knives" for its Faggot Brown-Shirts

History has a way sharing its scenarios. Hitler and the Nazis found its Brown Shirted SA, lead by homosexual Ernst Röhm, to be useful in forcing strong-arm submission. Until they became politically inconvenient and were eliminated.
Now there are the Militant PC Faggot Brown-Shirts who bully and force illegal "legal" actions agains free speech and association in much the same way. Yet they support all that is fantasy Sharia. Their support for all that is Sharia could find them one day with long knives at their throats to sever their heads because they are no longer useful homosexuals.
They even have the continuos thread of Anti-Semitism and mystical hoaxes filled with religious fervor. Then it was Aryan Gods and Myth, today it is "Global Warming." m/r

Wanted: More Warts :: SteynOnline

by Mark Steyn   Steyn Down Under

Christian Kerr interviews "provocative Canadian commentator Mark Steyn" in the weekend edition of The Australian about all the fun stuff - the death of free speech, the rise of identity politics, the west's civilizational death wish and contempt for its own inheritance:
Free speech is at the heart of Steyn's message. He is surprised that the controversial section 18c of our Racial Discrimination Act is still standing when his own country successfully repealed the equivalent parts of its Human Rights Act in 2013.

"Free peoples are losing the habit of free speech," he says."They're taught, not really just at university but in fact from kindergarten, that there is a correct view of certain subjects and that incorrect views are distressing. The last two generations raised in the
Western world, they don't do that thing, the apocryphal Voltaire line, 'I disagree with what you say but I'll fight to the death for you to.' They'll fight to the death for you not to be allowed to say it."

The consequences can be disturbing. "People can actually lose the spirit of liberty and once you've lost that there are not a lot of easy paths back," he cautions.
Indeed. It is remarkable how easily vast numbers of people now accept that truth is subordinate to the needs of ideological conformity - as we saw in Europe on New Year's Eve, when politicians, police and press colluded to cover up mass sexual assault - and, as their cover-up unraveled, millions of self-described progressives and feminists indignantly insisted that the cover-up had been the correct call.
