GOP candidates face a firing squad manned by leftist journalists.

The Republican presidential candidates' debate on CNBC wasn't so much a debate as it was a firing squad manned by left-leaning journalists.

Over and over journalistic equivalents of, "When did you stop beating your wife?" were asked of the candidates.

The reporter-moderators weren’t just asking questions: they were prosecuting the candidates at a televised show trial. Personal attacks were disguised as questions. (Here is a transcript of the at times
boisterous 10-way main debate, along with a transcript of the four-way undercard debate that preceded it.)

There was no shortage of conservative pundits who likened the televised proceedings to a canned hunt after a three-member panel of CNBC personalities spent two hours hurling loaded questions that painted the Republicans as absurd caricatures unworthy of being taken seriously.

John Kasich Praises CNBC | National Review Online

by JOHN FUND October 29, 2015

John Kasich Enters the Twilight Zone

If there’s a consensus about Wednesday’s GOP debate, it’s that the CNBC moderators had a train wreck. Among the non-conservatives who thought the moderators were horribly biased and inept were HBO’s Bill Maher and Ron Fournier of the National Journal. But Ohio governor John Kasich said afterwards that he was “very appreciative of how they did their job.” Kasich “thought they did a good job” and said that the raucous, interruption-filled debate was “well controlled.”

John Kasich’s perception of the debate reality is worthy of Rod Serling’s old mind-bending TV show.

Every four years, one Republican presidential candidate attempts to first win “the media primary,” primarily by accusing other GOP candidates of “extremism” while at the same time flattering the
mainstream media. In 2008, that candidate was John McCain — although his love affair with the media ended as soon as Barack Obama was his opponent. In 2012, it was former Utah governor Jon Huntsman, who crashed and burned.

This year, it’s no secret who the media likes. A CNBC profile of Kasich in September wasn’t subtle. Its headline was “Is John Kasich the GOP Media Darling Who Could Finally Win?” CNBC noted that the three candidates — McCain, Huntsman, and Kasich — all had the same consultant
for their White House bids. He’s John Weaver, a moderate Republican who has described his party as “a bunch of cranks.” Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin told CBS last month that Kasich is “the media’s favorite candidate, and that is a dirty little secret.” As Kasich proved after the CNBC debate, the admiration is mutual.

EXCLUSIVE - Donald Trump Rights Ship on Immigration: Demands Disney Rehire Workers Replaced by Cheap Foreign Labor, Calls Rubio 'Silicon Valley's Puppet' - Breitbart

Last night during the CNBC primary debate, Donald Trump, who
to this point in the campaign had been the Republican candidate most closely
aligned with the conservative grassroots on immigration policy, seemed to have
altered his message in several significant ways.

Breitbart News documented some of these changes here.

Trump, who leads many national 2016 polls, granted Breitbart

News an interview on the subject. Full questions and responses below:

BNN: The media has been filled with stories about companies flying in low-wage H-1B workers to replace American workers in tech jobs. Adding insult to injury, these American workers have been forced to train their replacements. If you were President, would you put a stop to this practice?

DT: Day one. This is why I got into this race. Because the everyday working person in this country is getting screwed. Lobbyists write the rules to benefit the rich and powerful. They buy off Senators like Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) to help them get rich at the expense of working Americans by using H-1B visas–so called “high tech” visas–to replace American workers in all sorts of solid middle class jobs. If I am President, I will not issue any H-1B visas to companies that replace American workers and my Department of Justice will pursue action against them.

The Certainty of Uncertainty: "A Disgrace to the Profession": The World's Scientists on Michael E Mann, his Hockey Stick and their Damage to Science :: SteynOnline

by Mark Steyn

Nine years ago self-proclaimed "climate hawk" David Roberts was contemplating Nuremberg trials for deniers:
When we've finally gotten serious about global warming, when the impacts are really hitting us and we're in a full worldwide scramble to minimize the damage, we should have war crimes trials for these bastards — some sort of climate Nuremberg.
But in his latest piece, at Vox.com, he's singing a rather different tune:
Basically, it's difficult to predict anything, especially regarding sprawling systems like the global economy and atmosphere, because everything depends on everything else. There's no fixed point of reference.
Now he tells us.
Grappling with this kind of uncertainty turns out to be absolutely core to climate policymaking. Climate nerds have attempted to create models that include, at least in rudimentary form, all of these interacting economic and atmospheric systems. They call these integrated assessment models, or IAMs, and they are the primary tool  used by governments and international bodies to gauge the threat of climate change. IAMs are how policies are compared and costs are estimated.

So it's worth asking: Do IAMs adequately account for uncertainty? Do they clearly communicate uncertainty to policymakers?

The answer to those questions is almost certainly "no."
Mr Roberts is almost certainly right. But he's unlikely to find any takers for that line among the warm-mongers at next month's Paris climate jamboree. As I explain in my new book, the IPCC used Michael E Mann's ridiculous hockey stick to sell certainty: 1998 is the hottest year of the hottest decade of the hottest century in, like forever.

Given the zillion-dollar alarmism industry it fueled, it would be asking a lot for its beneficiaries to back away from that to something more qualified.

We are watching the death of open frontiers in Europe

The endless wave of migrants - for which we have utterly failed to prepare - will unleash extremist politics throughout the Continent

The extraordinary aerial photo of a column of refugees and migrants tramping through the fields of Slovenia may come to symbolise the moment the EU began to fall apart. The irony can be lost on no one: it was in order to prevent such scenes happening again in continental Europe that the alliance was forged in the first place in the late 1950s. Yet here we are more than half a century later facing the prospect of thousands – maybe hundreds of thousands – of displaced people freezing and starving in the grasslands of eastern Europe as winter closes in.

It is hard to comprehend the stupefying naivety of those, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who thought it a good idea to send out an utterly self-serving signal a few weeks ago inviting anyone who could make the journey to head for Europe. This was ostensibly aimed at Syrians who had fled the civil war in their homeland; but the exodus has been swelled by migrants from many other countries looking for a better life – and who can blame them? ...

Death to Capitalism? Visitors to Marx’s Grave Balk at Fee - WSJ

London cemetery charges fee to see late communist’s memorial

HIGHGATE CEMETERY, LONDON—On a summer visit to the grave of Karl Marx, Ben Gliniecki found that he would have to pay £4, or about $6, to pay respects to the man who sounded the death knell for private property.
Mr. Gliniecki, a Marxist, said no.
“Personally, I think it is disgusting,” the 24-year-old political activist said. “There are no depths of irony, or bad taste, to which capitalists won’t sink if they think they can make money out of it.”
The charity that looks after this cemetery has long taken swipe at a different irony: Karl Marx’s decision to buy a burial plot in a private London graveyard over the then state-provided alternatives. They say their cover fee subsidizes the upkeep of a cemetery where 170,000 other people rest.
The two sides have squabbled since the early 1990s, when the Friends of Highgate Cemetery began charging to fund the conservation of a burial ground whose elaborate gothic tombs and winding paths had fallen into disrepair. Now, the charge is infuriating a new generation of Marxists. Interest in his legacy is gaining fresh legs in Britain following September’s election ofJeremy Corbyn, a self-described Marx admirer, as leader of the opposition Labour Party.

Is the Fix In, Is Washington Now All Sham?

How OUTRAGES IS THIS?
[Ryan's provision to become Speaker] "wanted was to eliminate the House rule written by Thomas Jefferson that speakers can be recalled." m/r

Speakstakes: Paul Ryan Situation Remains Murky - The Rush Limbaugh Show

Rush Limbaugh, from the 10-23-15 Broadcast

My only point is that it didn't happen that way.  Washington news is a
script.  Washington politics is a script.  It is written for people in
Washington, in the media, and people in political parties, those that
are famous and have a role in talking and reaching the public, they have
roles to play.  The short version of this is that I think, you know,
Ryan had these two demands.  And I think these demands were dealt with
long before anybody ever heard about them.  His demand was that he be
elected unanimously by the Republican caucus. He didn't want any
disagreement.  And that was to further unity.

And the second thing he wanted was to eliminate the House rule
written by Thomas Jefferson that speakers can be recalled.  And the
third thing, he didn't want to have to travel on weekends.  He wanted to
be able to maintain his time with his family.  Now, that was presented
to us in one day.  My contention is this was all done days and maybe a
week prior, the negotiations, the expressive Paul Ryan telling people
what his demands were, people approaching him to do this, and that
processes were put in place to make those things happen.  So that takes
us to this. Well, let me close the loop on it.

Here's the dream, from the Republican donor side.  The Republican
donor side is that Jeb Bush or, if not Jeb, somebody else acceptable to
the Republican establishment, gets elected president, Paul Ryan is
Speaker of the House, and the donor class thinks that if they can make
that happen, that within 12 to 18 months their entire agenda will be
implemented.  ...

As we come to an end of another grim week in politics, two views of how Campaign 2016 is going from Team Bush:

He's dead politically, he'll never be president of the
United States, ever. By definition I don't think you can be a
front-runner if you're totally un-electable. I think there's there an
a-priori logic problem in that.
So that's great news for Jeb. Because if you discount the front-runner, and the runner-up to the front-runner, and Cruz and Rubioand whatnot, then the real front-runner is Jeb, who's totally electable even if no actual electors want to elect him. Why is that?

Why would you expect the Gutless Republicans to do anything but Cave-In?

A "Humanitarian Crisis" or Just Bad Government? by Steven Malanga, City Journal October 25, 2015

Obama wants to rescue Puerto Rico; Republicans should call his bluff and demand some real reforms.

Earlier this week, the Obama administration doubled down on efforts to aid Puerto Rico. The administration proposed to change American law to allow the territory and its municipalities to seek bankruptcy protection. The “Roadmap for Congressional Action” on Puerto Rico seems more calculated to embarrass Republicans than to find an actual solution to the deeply indebted island’s problems. Republicans had serious concerns about previous Puerto Rico bailout proposals. Rather than addressing these concerns, Obama simply cast the issue as a “humanitarian crisis.” The implication? Rejection of his plan would be heartless. But instead of dismissing it, Republicans should demand more substantial concessions on union-friendly federal policies that have helped deep-six Puerto Rico’s economy. Then we’ll see how serious Obama is about this “humanitarian crisis.”
Earlier this year, in a report commissioned by Puerto Rico’s government, three international economists authored a described the territory’s woes. While the report scored the territory for its lack of fiscal controls in the face of a struggling economy, the economists also argued that Puerto Rico suffered because it was forced to adhere to federal laws that have “gnawed at growth.” The “single most telling statistic in Puerto Rico,” they wrote, is that only 40 percent of the working-age population is employed. The biggest obstacle to jobs, the report argued, is that the territory must observe federal minimum-wage law, even though incomes in general are far lower on the island than in U.S. states. A full-time worker in Puerto Rico making minimum wage earns 77 percent of the average wage on the island, compared with just 28 percent in U.S. states. The cost of paying even an unskilled worker is so high that “employers are disinclined to hire.” Even more foolishly, welfare benefits on the island—including food stamps, Medicaid, and subsidies for utility bills—approach mainland levels. Recipients can garner benefits equal to $1,743 a month, more than the average wage on the island. “The result,” the report notes, “is massive underutilization of labor, foregone output, and waning competitiveness.”
Puerto Rico also suffers from the ill-effects of the union-friendly Jones Act—a 1920 law that drives up the cost of goods by forcing ships traveling between U.S. ports to be built and manned by Americans. The restrictions have a particularly devastating effect on the cost of transporting goods to and from U.S. island territories or states, such as Puerto Rico and Hawaii.  ...

Hillary Clinton & NRA -- Gun Control | National Review Online

by Charles C. W. Cooke October 23, 2015

‘What is wrong with us,” Hillary Clinton inquired bitterly in Florida this month, “that we cannot stand up to the NRA and the gun lobby, and the gun manufacturers they represent?” She struck a hero’s pose: “We need to act and we need to build a movement. It’s infuriating!”

Implicit in Clinton’s lament was a serious charge: That the “us” in the equation represents the majority of American voters, and that the “NRA” represents an insidious force that has been successful in thwarting that majority’s will. Such presumptions are all-but ubiquitous in progressive-leaning circles. The NRA, President Obama told Marc Maron confidently in August of this year, has developed such an “extremely strong” “grip” on Congress that even “common-sense” reforms cannot make it into law. This, Obama submits, is democratically unjust. “I would particularly ask America’s gun owners,” he griped in a recent press conference, “to think about whether your views are being properly represented by the organization that suggests it is speaking for you.”

Seductive as it might be, there is little within the facts to recommend this approach. As Gallup confirmed just this week, the NRA is not a fringe organization that has managed somehow to impose a greatly undeserved octopus’s grip, but a mainstream plank of American civil society with approval ratings of which the vast majority of national politicians could only dream. “Despite a year of blistering criticism,” the polling firm notes, “58% in the U.S. have a favorable opinion” of the NRA — a number that “includes the highest recording of ‘very favorable’ opinions (26%) since Gallup began asking this question in 1989.” That trend line is moving upwards.

Exclusive: Jack Cashill on how 1 university president stood up for real diversity

Wesleyan University sophomore Bryan Stascavage knew he would ruffle a few feathers when, just a week ago, he wrote an op-ed for the campus newspaper, the Argus, on the subject of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Although supportive of the movement’s goals, Stascavage summed up his painfully balanced piece with this idea: “If vilification and denigration of the police force continues to be a significant portion of Black Lives Matter’s message, then I will not support the movement.”

“Many Americans feel the same,” Stascavage opined. Unfortunately for him, few of them go to Wesleyan. This “cis, het, white man,” as he was promptly denounced, did not just ruffle feathers. He set the whole crazed chicken coop a-cackling.

“Once the article was read by the campus,” said Stascavage, “instead of giving me criticisms, [the reaction] was to call me a racist and totry to get me to never publish again – students screaming at me in public for 15 minutes, people whispering ‘racist’ as I walk by.”

A pot-smoking teenage hacker may have gotten into top secret files held by CIA Director John Brennan on a freakin’ AOL account.
Seriously:
CIA Director John Brennan’s private account held sensitive files — including his 47-page application for top-secret security clearance — until he recently learned that it had been infiltrated, the hacker told The Post.
Other emails stored in Brennan’s non-government account contained the Social Security numbers and personal information of more than a dozen top American intelligence officials, as well as a government letter about the use of “harsh interrogation techniques” on terrorism suspects, according to the hacker.

The FBI and other federal agencies are now investigating the hacker, with one source saying criminal charges are possible, law enforcement sources said.

“I think they’ll want to make an example out of him to deter people from doing this in the future,” said a source who described the situation as “just wild” and “crazy.”
How about making an example out of a witless ignoramus like Brennan?

Hillary’s Breathtaking Mendacity

She lied to the nation in 2012, and she’s lying again now. You don’t look surprised.

‘We’ve seen the heavy assault on our post in Benghazi that took the lives of those brave men. We’ve seen rage and violence directed at American embassies over an awful Internet video that we had nothing to do with.”

Those words, depraved words, were spoken by then–secretary of state Hillary Clinton, with President Obama by her side, on September 14, 2012. This was at Joint Base Andrews, during the most sacred of rites: the return of the remains of Sean Smith, Glen Doherty, Tyrone Woods, and Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, all slain in the line of duty in Benghazi.

And all slain, it must never be forgotten, by jihadists carrying out what Clinton, Obama, and high-ranking national-security officials throughout the United States government knew full well was a planned terrorist attack, not a “protest” run amok and incited by “an awful Internet video.”

That obvious fact is now explicit after Mrs. Clinton’s galling testimony on Thursday before the House select committee investigating the Benghazi massacre.

Without this Myth of Institutional Racism, 'Community Organizers' would be Out of a Job

The Reality is Simple, Black Men Commit the Most Crime:
The most dangerous misconception about our criminal justice system is that it is pervaded by racial bias. For decades, criminologists have tried to find evidence proving that the overrepresentation of blacks in prison is due to systemic racial inequity.
The Myth of Criminal-Justice Racism by Heather Mac Donald, City Journal October 22, 2015

Testimony before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary, October 19, 2015

October 22, 2015

Earlier this week, Heather Mac Donald testified on criminal justice and the deincarceration movement before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Her opening statement follows.

Chairman Grassley, Ranking Member Leahy, and members of the Committee, my name is Heather Mac Donald. I am honored to address you today regarding the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2015. I am the Thomas W. Smith fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, a public policy think tank in New York City. I have written extensively on law enforcement and criminal justice.

Today I want to examine the broader political context of the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act. We are in the midst of a national movement for deincarceration and decriminalization. That movement rests on the following narrative: America’s criminal justice system, it is said, has become irrationally draconian, ushering in an era of so-called “mass incarceration.” The driving force behind “mass incarceration,” the story goes, is a misconceived war on drugs. As President Barack Obama said in July in Philadelphia: “The real reason our prison population is so high” is that we have “locked up more and more nonviolent drug offenders than ever before, for longer than ever before.” In popular understanding, prisons and jails are filled with harmless pot smokers.

The most poisonous claim in the dominant narrative is that our criminal justice system is a product and a source of racial inequity. The drug war in particular is said to be infected by racial bias. “Mass incarceration” is allegedly destroying black communities by taking fathers away from their families and imposing crippling criminal records on released convicts. Finally, prison is condemned as a huge waste of resources.

Nothing in this dominant narrative is true. Prison remains a lifetime achievement award for persistence in criminal offending. ...

California: High Taxes, Democrats, & Big Problems | National Review Online

by Victor Davis Hanson October 22, 2015

Crime is back up in California. Los Angeles reported a 20.6 percent increase in violent crimes over the first half of 2015 and nearly an 11 percent increase in property crimes.
Last year, cash-strapped California taxpayers voted for Proposition 47, which so far has let thousands of convicted criminals go free from prison and back onto the streets. Now the state may have to relearn what lawbreakers often do when let out of jail early.
The state may be entering the fifth year of a catastrophic drought, but California has not started building any of the new reservoirs that were planned but long ago canceled under the unfinished California Water Project. Water may remain scarce, but legislators — many of whom have their daily water needs met by the ancient reservoirs and canals that their grandparents built — don’t seem overly bothered. They prefer to designate transgender restrooms, ban plastic bags at grocery stores, and prohibit pet dogs from chasing bears and bobcats.
Never has a region been so naturally rich but so poorly run by its latest generation of custodians.

The verdict comes after 447 days of Mr. Rezaian being in jail -- that is three days more than the 444 days that American diplomats were held hostage. For those who argue Iran of 2015 is far different from the revolutionary Iran of 1979, this is a clear-cut example that the Islamic Republic is still the same: Islamist, anti-American, and oppressive.
The Iranian Students’ News Agency quoted Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, a hardliner who is a spokesman for Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, as stating that Rezaian had been found guilty. Interestingly, Mr. Mohseni-Ejei, who was the minister of intelligence from 2005 to July 2009, insisted that he did not know the details of the sentence. Really?
The trial was held behind the scenes and Mr. Rezaian was allowed access to his attorney only one time throughout the span of the trial. Mohseni-Ejei stated that "this person has been sentenced, but I don't know the details of the verdict." The verdict will most likely be appealed as Mr. Mohseni Ejei added that the ruling is not final and it can be appealed by Rezaian or his lawyer in the next 20 days. ...

New ‘Star Wars’ blasted as ‘anti-white’

by Douglas Ernst 10-19-15

Director J.J. Abrams’ political activism has prompted online fans to boycott “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” for being anti-white.

The hashtag #BoycottStarWarsVII exploded on Twitter Monday, just hours before the release of a new trailer during ESPN’s Monday Night Football game between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles. The reason: Abrams’ movie is allegedly a dream come true for race activists.

“#BoycottStarWarsVII because it is anti-white propaganda promoting #whitegenocide,” an account ] called End Cultural Marxism said. “A friend in L.A. said #StarWarsVII is basically ‘[Black Lives Matter activist Deray Mckesson] in Space.’ Jewish activist JJ Abrams is an anti-white nut.”

The fit finally hit the shan for Sacramento mayor and former NBA star Kevin Johnson. His latest troubles are a stark reminder of the despicable White House role in railroading a vigilant government watchdog who red-flagged Johnson’s corruption years ago.
Sports fans buzzed last week after ESPN shelved a documentary celebrating Johnson’s efforts to keep the Sacramento Kings basketball team in his city. The public relations disaster came at the hands of the weeklySacramento News & Review, which has published damning reports all year long on Johnson’s use of public resources for personal gain—along with sports website Deadspin, which has hammered Johnson over longtime allegations of the athlete-turned-Democrat point man’s sleazy financial dealings and personal perversities.

Bitch-of-Benghazi's 'Genocide' Lie

Articles: Hillary's 'Genocide' Lie

By Jack Cashill  10-15-15

“Well, let's remember what was going on,” Hillary Clinton told Anderson Cooper Tuesday night in Las Vegas in response to his question about the bombing of Libya. “We had a murderous dictator, Qadaffi, who had American blood on his hands, as I'm sure you remember, threatening to massacre large numbers of the Libyan people.”
Before going any further, we might want to note that In April 2009, Qaddafi’s son Mutassim had a cordial meeting with Secretary of State Clinton in Washington. At that time she was apparently not too squeamish about the blood on his old man’s hands. “We deeply value the relationship between Libya and the United States,” Hillary told the press with the tall, Western-looking young man standing beside her.
Back to Las Vegas. “We had our closest allies in Europe burning up the phone lines begging us to help them try to prevent what they saw as a mass genocide, in their words,” Hillary continued with a straight face.
When the late William Safire called Ms. Clinton a “congenital liar,” he knew whereof he spoke. Mendacity is in Hillary’s DNA. There was no genocide in Libya, nothing close. ...

Bridge of Spies: Review | National Review Online

Reviews of Bridge of Spies, Truth, and Suffragette

Bridge of Spies, an account of the 1957 exchange between the U.S. and the Soviet Union of captured espionage agents, the Russian Colonel Rudolph Abel and the American pilot Gary Francis Powers.

... When attorney James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks) defends Abel before the Supreme Court, the imagery is overcast, somber; when Powers is detained by a Russian court, sunlight shines through the casements. Seem anti-American? In visual terms, Bridge of Spies is an ACLU movie.  ...

______________
Truth could be called All the President’s Mice, for its rat-pack mentality concerning the valor of the New York media elite, who presume to own truth and influence the electorate.

Few movies reveal this political bias as stupidly as this presumptuously titled biopic, which glorifies former CBS news producer Mary Mapes’s obstinacy. Mapes used her position on the show 60 Minutes (“We’re the gold standard!”) to report the Abu Ghraib abuses, then sought to besmirch President Bush with allegations about his National Guard history. “He doesn’t deserve reelection” begins the 2004 storyline, and divulging this animosity is the film’s last honest moment. ...

Not a good week for movie feminism. Suffragette retells the 1912 British movement for women’s voting rights by sentimentalizing victimhood and valorizing terrorist activism (planting bombs and
throwing rocks hidden in baby carriages). Carey “Crybaby” Mulligan plays a newly politicized laundress, the lead character in this unscrupulous effort at popularizing dissent. As the Communist-inspired Emmeline Pankhurst, Meryl Streep pipes: “Be militant, each of you in your own way. I’d rather be a rebel than a slave!” using a Brit accent fake enough to be Blanchett. ...

White Trash Talk
Clinton's Southern strategy? Hillary fakes her accent for local crowd | Washington Examiner

By CURT MILLS   10/17/15

Hillary Clinton has started faking a Southern drawl to speak to Southerners, just as she did during her last presidential run eight years ago.
The tactic drew chuckless, derision and not a little resentment when she tried it in 2007 and 2008. But she was back at it again in Alabama on Saturday, putting on a heavy twang to express her contempt for Republicans. ...

The Biggest Obamacare Disaster You've Never Heard About | The Daily Caller

by Mark Tapscott  10/16/2015

It’s an Obamacare story with every imaginable outrage — blatant conflicts of interest, millions of tax dollars going to political cronies, thousands of Americans left without health insurance, lavish pay for incompetent executives, federal funds diverted illegally, multiple congressional investigations, insider trading convictions and big decisions made behind closed doors.

Tragically, there is even a child abuser. But search the New York Times web site for “Obamacare co-ops” and nothing comes up. Just three entries appear for the same search on the Washington Post web site.

Not so, Richard Pollock of the Daily Caller News Foundation’s Investigative Group. Pollock has filed dozens of stories about the Obamacare co-ops since 23 of the tax-funded groups were created in 2011 at a cost of $2 billion. President Obama promised the co-ops would help lower medical costs by competing with profit-driven private companies.

Seven of the co-ops have closed. A recent report by the Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General said the rest of the co-ops are in deep financial trouble and more are expected to close.

It's the End of the World . . . Sort Of by Oren Cass, City Journal October 15, 2015

Climate-change alarmists warn of the apocalypse but push for meaningless international agreements.

Final preparations are underway for COP21 in Paris, the biggest international climate-change negotiation since 2009’s epic failure in Copenhagen. This time, the fix is in: negotiators have established a process guaranteed to produce an agreement, albeit a meaningless one. Rather than set firm restrictions on greenhouse-gas emissions, each nation is invited to submit its own proposed “contribution” to that goal. The sum total of these contributions—though they may not represent significant emissions reductions and will not be enforceable in any case—will constitute the “agreement.”
The idea, according to a preliminary negotiating text, is to “enable anupward spiral of ambition over time,” but as a commentary in Naturenoted on Monday: “History and the science of cooperation predict thatquite the opposite will happen.” Indeed, China and India have offered contributions weaker than their existing policies, and some of the largest developing nations have declined even to submit proposals. The most recent draft agreement text, meanwhile, reads like a bad Mad-Lib, bracketed to show those areas where agreement remains pending: “Each Party [shall][should][other] regularly communicate a nationally determined mitigation [contribution][commitment][other] that it [shall][should][other] implement.”
The farcical proceedings make clear the irreconcilable gap between the rhetorical excesses and practical realities of the climate-change debate.  ...
