Tennessee’s alcohol politics put entrenched interests first.

Tennessee is known for many things: country music, Elvis’s Graceland estate, beautiful mountains, and fine liquor. The state produces both moonshine (some of which is now being made licitly) and its own kind of whiskey. Like bourbon, nearly all Tennessee whiskey is made mostly from corn and aged in new charred oak barrels. Distillers in the Volunteer State go a step further and run the liquor through sugar-maple charcoal before putting it in cask.

Tennessee also is a case study in corrupt, consumer-unfriendly alcohol politics. Consider: Jack Daniel’s is an iconic, global brand. The company recently announced a $140 million expansion of its operations, which comes just a few years after a $103 million build-out. More than a quarter-million thirsty tourists come to the distillery each year. Yet, Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg is located in a dry county. Really. Moore County (population 6,322) generally prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages by shops and restaurants.

Moore County, it should be noted, is not an oddball. Until 2009, distilleries were permitted to operate in only three of Tennessee’s 95 counties. Perhaps in recognition that distilling jobs are economy-growing manufacturing jobs, the state Legislature lifted the cap to 44 counties.

It is a confounding situation. Every time an effort to make Tennessee’s alcohol laws more consumer-friendly and market-based, a political hullabaloo erupts. ...

  In August, three months before the election that will determine the new President of the United States, the Games of the XXXI Olympiad will take place in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Who will prevail in the medal count is open to speculation.  As fans ponder the prospects, a past Olympic moment offers a perspective on President Obama’s recent visit to Cuba.

During the 1972 Munich Olympics, a young United States men’s basketball team came from behind to defeat a more experienced squad from the Soviet Union by a score of 50-49. The buzzer sounded and the Americans began to celebrate. Then Renato William Jones, secretary-general of the International Federation of Amateur Basketball (FIBA), came out of the stands. Reportedly a good friend of the Soviets, Jones prevailed on Olympic officials to put time back on the clock. They did so three times and on their third try the Soviets scored a basket and stole the victory from the Americans. That outcome foreshadowed what would later take place in Cuba.

Under Fidel Castro, a Stalinist, sadist and economic crackpot, Cuba proved a loser on every economic indicator, not only in comparison to the United States but virtually every nation in the hemisphere. Cuba was a Soviet colony and the regime could not have survived without massive subsidies. A US trade embargo failed to gain reparations, dislodge the totalitarian regime, or promote democratic reforms.

In return for lifting the embargo, many observers would agree, it is reasonable that the Cuban regime should hold free and fair elections for the first time in more than half a century. Many would also consider it reasonable that the Castro regime, whose human rights violations take up so much space in Amnesty International reports, should allow freedom of speech, association, and assembly. The current President of the United States made no such demands.

In a brief Easter weekend radio address, President Obama vowed to decimate the self-proclaimed Islamic State, but he said the United States will do so by offering an example of freedom, tolerance and open society.

"Our openness to refugees fleeing ISIL's violence; our determination to win the battle against ISIL's hateful and violent propaganda — a distorted view of Islam that aims to radicalize young Muslims to their cause," are paramount in the fight, Obama told Americans during his weekly radio address.


Admitting entry to Syrian and Iraqi refugees has become a divisive issue in the U.S. as well as Europe, but Obama made clear he has no plan to back off his promise to admit 100,000 to the U.S. this year.

The deadly airborne disease tuberculosis, after being on the decline in the U.S. for the past 23 years, showed an uptick in the number of cases, according to federal data released Thursday. The number of TB cases rose last year and the rate of cases has leveled off at three per 100,000 people since 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report, reported The Wall Street Journal.

While the increase in cases was slight—9,563 cases in 2015, compared with 9,406 in 2014—it suggests that progress toward a long-standing national goal of reducing tuberculosis to one case or fewer per million people is off course, TB officials and experts conceded.

“Right now it looks like progress has stalled in moving toward elimination,” said Philip LoBue, director of the CDC’s division of tuberculosis elimination.

And, of course, there will be flags lowered and monuments lit up all over the world this week in the national colors of Belgium to show "solidarity" with Tuesday's victims of The Perpetrators Whose Religion Shall Not Be Named.

Now, without getting into details and sharing with you excerpts, this is exactly what I was trying to explain in the opening hour of the program today when I was doing my best to explain to you establishment opposition to Trump, that it is personal.  The people I'm talking about, imagine they're Supermen, and this is all kryptonite to them. Everything happening threatens them with a diet of nothing but kryptonite.  Their power, their prestige, their positions, their futures, their present -- their reputations as opinion makers, their reputations as relevant people who matter in terms of Washington and policy, whatever -- all of that is threatened.

Those people's positions exist because there is a Republican Party that is controlled and run by people like them and them.  And when you see a column saying nominating Donald Trump will end the Republican Party as we know it, and so will not nominating him ruin the Republican Party or end it as we know it, the translation of that... If you take that personally, if you apply this personally to people whose very existence, stature, security, financial and otherwise, depends not only on the party existing, but them being in positions of power, defining and controlling it, you understand how separate things are for them.

My only point is that it's personal.  When you see people say, "I'm gonna vote for Hillary Clinton before I the vote for Cruz! I'm gonna the vote for Hillary Clinton before I vote for Ted Cruz..." When you hear Republicans saying that, you realize it's not about the country, it's not about what's best for the country.  It's about what's best for them.  It's about holding onto whatever it is they think they've got.

Trump’s reference to London’s no-go zones was met with a massive round of sneering, which is what passes for argument in America these days. Jeb! said Trump was “unhinged,” Sen. John McCain [Email him] called him “foolish,” and former vice president Dick Cheney said Trump’s remarks went “against everything we stand for and believe in.” (Based on Trump’s crushing primary victories, Cheney is no longer qualified to say what “we” believe in.)

At least 26 people have been killed after a terrorist suicide attack ripped through Zaventem Airport in Brussels and another blast hit a city metro station.

Stop Trump Movement Gets Boost From Mexico's Efforts in U.S.

(Bloomberg) -- Mexico is mounting an unprecedented effort to turn its permanent residents in the U.S. into citizens, a status that would enable them to vote -- presumably against Donald Trump.

Officially, Mexico says it respects U.S. sovereignty and has no strategy to influence the result of the presidential race. Yet Mexican diplomats are mobilizing for the first time to assist immigrants in gaining U.S. citizenship, hosting free workshops on naturalization.

"This is a historic moment where the Mexican consulate will open its doors to carry out these types of events in favor of the Mexican community," Adrian Sosa, a spokesman for the consulate in Chicago, said before an event on March 19. In Dallas, about 250 permanent residents attended the consulate’s first "citizenship clinic" in February and another 150 in its second in March. In Las Vegas, the turnout topped 500.

Underscoring the fine line that separates participation from interfering in another country’s election, Sosa noted that the consulate only hosts the event but it’s community organizations who offer the advice.

Now that Marco Rubio has suspended his campaign, Donald Trump may have an open path to the magic number of 1,237 delegates needed to secure the Republican nomination.  Delusional thinking on my part?  Actually, this was a recent headline in the NY Times.

Predictably, the political right and left are in a tizzy over this prospect, but for different reasons.  On the right, it is a "moral and character issue" according to Erick Erickson, organizer of Conservatives Against Trump. A group of conservative activists met and drafted a statement denouncing Trump but said activists declined to sign the statement or otherwise identify themselves.  Surprising that they would not all be proud to publically stand against Trump rather than scheme against him behind closed doors.

The GOP establishment is also down on The Donald because, in their opinion, he would lose badly to Hillary Clinton.  Karl Rove takes it farther, promising, "If Trump is the nominee, the GOP will lose the White House and Senate."  Severely conservative Mitt Romney agrees: "a Trump nomination enables her [Hillary Clinton's] victory."  Even severely underwhelming presidential candidate Lindsey Graham says of Trump, "He's going to lose badly."

The left too is in panic mode about Trump's march to the nomination.  At first glance, this makes no sense.  If Trump is as bad a candidate as Rove, Romney, Graham, and others believe, the left should be doing handsprings over the prospect of him being the candidate to face Clinton in the general election and lose in a landslide.  Instead of criticizing Trump, big media should be quietly encouraging his candidacy, running their own version of operation chaos.

INDIANAPOLIS — The fuzzy video, shot by a worker on the floor of a Carrier factory here in the American heartland last month, captured the raging national debate over trade and the future of the working class in 3 minutes 32 seconds.

“This is strictly a business decision,” a Carrier executive tells employees, describing how their 1,400 jobs making furnaces and heating equipment will be sent to Mexico. Workers there typically earn about $19 a day — less than what many on the assembly line here make in an hour. As boos and curses erupt from the crowd, the executive says, “Please quiet down.”

What came next was nothing of the kind.

Within hours of being posted on Facebook, the video went viral. Three days after Carrier’s Feb. 10 announcement, Donald J. Trump seized on the video in a Republican presidential debate and made Carrier’s move to Mexico a centerpiece of his stump speeches attacking free trade.

For the alleged offense of trying to steal a propaganda poster from a Pyongyang hotel, North Korea has now imposed a sentence of 15 years of prison and hard labor on a visiting American college student, Otto Frederick Warmbier. The U.S. State Department, in a classic piece of diplomatic understatement, has called this sentence "unduly harsh," and repeated its warning against travel to North Korea.

No doubt it was foolish of Warmbier to go to North Korea at all. It was doubly foolish if, indeed, the 21-year-old Warmbier while visiting North Korea tried to filch one of the ubiquitous propaganda posters -- which North Korea's people are required, by their tyrant, to treat as sacred writ. The civilized world still awaits the day when all such North Korean propaganda will be torn down wholesale, and dumped where it belongs -- in that vast Ozymandias trashpit of history's discarded lies.

But the real foolishness here has almost nothing to do with Otto Warmbier. It has everything to do with a U.S. policy that has repeatedly rewarded North Korea for this hostage racket. There is by now a ritual to such proceedings. An American citizen trespasses onto North Korean turf, or arrives with a tour group and commits a transgression against Pyongyang's totalitarian rules. North Korea turns these people into propaganda pawns and international bargaining chips, imposing absurd sentences and effectively demanding high-profile ransom -- typically in the form of a prominent figure who travels to North Korea to petition for their release.

NEW YORK – A CEO of a fast-food company is causing a stir on social media after claiming that he wants to create a fully automated restaurant.

“We could have a restaurant that’s focused on all-natural products and is much like an Eatsa, where you order on a kiosk, you pay with a credit or debit card, your order pops up, and you never see a person,” Carl’s Jr. CEO Andy Puzder told Business Insider.

Puzder says the automated restaurant would be cheaper since he wouldn’t have to worry about rising minimum wage.

“If you’re making labor more expensive, and automation less expensive- this is not rocket science,” Puzder said.

Sugar is Sweet, Its Price is Subsidized and Manipulated. But My Horse Loves It.

Back in the days of polyester 1970's, the markets for Sugar and Silver were cornered, much as was oil embargoed, and predictably, their priced soared. It was a strange time. People were buying up Silver before the price moved up, sugar became scarce with large empty spaces on the grocery shelves and it doubled in price, then doubled again. Soft drink bottlers were forced to find an alternative in high fructose corn syrup and sugar miraculously became available again (at the higher price).

All this time sugar and corn were subsidized. They just hadn't been subsidized enough. They still are. Corn is subsidized now by regulation to be distilled into ethanol in some states to give poorer gas mileage and ruin the seals in fuel pumps.

Anyway, sugar has been subsidized by governments, in various ways, for centuries. Queen Elizabeth I loved it so much she turned her teeth black. Help to keep her the Virgin Queen, no doubt.

Since the sugar panic of the 1970's, sugar price have been held artificially high in the U.S. through continuous agriculture subsidies. The USSR kept the Cuban Sugar crops afloat until 1991, when the USSR couldn't keep itself afloat. Sugar prices my be in for another price adjustment, should Obama "normalize" some trade with Cuba.

I recall in the late 1980's, I was phoned by a commodities trader who was trying sell me Sugar Futures.

At the time, to me, sugar had about the most artificial price in the national and world markets of any crop commodity, so I told him so. This trader became quite indignant with me and ask me "how dare I question his 'expert' advise." Fine, I said, keep cold-calling sugar, but it won't stay sweet. m/r

Not all is sweet in the heavily subsidized global sugar trade this U.S. election year.

With major U.S. trade initiatives working their way between the legislative and executive branches, the future of U.S. trade policy has taken center stage in the 2016 presidential contests. As candidates make their way through the various primaries in both manufacturing and agricultural states, each is outlining their plans for how they might make better deals for the United States. Even better, none of this is done in a vacuum. Markets watch politics, and global markets watch U.S. politics especially.

So when candidates for President of the United States start talking tough on trade, one can be sure that other nations are watching what is said closely — and reacting accordingly.

Such is the case in the latest battle in the global sugar trade. Two of the biggest players in the business, Brazil and Thailand, are going head-to-head before the World Trade Organization. The issue, as one can imagine, is subsidies, with Brazil accusing Thailand of massive subsidization of its sugar firms. This is ironic, of course, since Brazil is well known to be massively subsidizing its sugar industry — as well as trying to gain competitive advantage in trade through systematic devaluation of its currency (another issue raised in this year’s U.S. presidential race — how the U.S. ought to respond to currency devaluation by other nations).

In a room full of Republican donors last week, Gov. John Kasich said something you don’t
normally hear at a GOP fundraiser.

“This isn’t popular to always say, but I believe there is a problem with climates, climate
change in the atmosphere,” Kasich told a Ross County Republican function on Thursday. “I believe
it. I don’t know how much there is, but I also know the good Lord wants us to be good stewards of
his creation. And so, at the end of the day, if we can find these breakthroughs to help us have a
cleaner environment, I’m all for it.”

For context, Kasich was speaking about his wide-ranging energy policy, which includes shale
drilling, clean-coal technology, capturing waste heat and support for solar and wind energy. But he
broke from his usual speech to drop the climate-change line in there — a hot-button topic for some
conservatives who reject global warming.

For instance, GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum draws applause when he says global
warming is “political science.”

An economist at the Congressional Budget Office suggested on Monday that the federal government could start charging people based on how far they drive in order to generate more government revenues to spend on highway projects.

Chad Shirley, CBO's deputy assistant director for microeconomic studies, gave a presentation that says federal gas tax revenues are falling short of federal spending on highway programs. But to resolve that problem, Shirley didn't propose less federal spending, and instead offered three suggestions.

The first is simply, "charging drivers" more the more they drive on roads:

“Last night, without consulting local police, Donald Trump abruptly cancelled a rally in Chicago in the face of massive and overwhelmingly peaceful student-led protests,” MoveOn.org wrote in an email Saturday to members. “We’re being flooded with aggressive emails and social media posts from Trump supporters. Some of them are threatening. We refuse to be intimidated by Donald Trump, Fox News, or anyone else.”

The email asked members to donate $3 to help the effort. The progressive group is funded by billionaire George Soros, and has endorsed Democratic candidate Vermont Sen. Bernard Sanders for president. ...
