(Crain's) — Sen. Dick Durbin introduced legislation today that would require all but the smallest Internet retailers to collect what he called “billions in taxes that are already owed.”

The Illinois Democrat's “Main Street Fairness Act” would overturn Supreme Court decisions that held the state and local sales tax system is so complex that requiring Internet retailers to collect sales taxes would be a burden on interstate commerce. The bill would require states to use a simplified and harmonized sales tax system, already adopted by 24 states.
