There was always a suspicion Einstein was wrong - Speed of light 'broken' at CERN, scientists claim

Back to Newton?

Albert Einstein had to develop a separate 'special theory' of relativity that had an absolute limit as the speed of light.

Speed of light 'broken' at CERN, scientists claim - Telegraph
Sept 23, 2011

It was Albert Einstein, no less, who proposed more than 100 years ago that nothing could travel faster than the speed of light.

Einstein’s theory of special relativity, proposed in 1905, states that nothing in the universe can travel faster than the speed of light.

But last night it emerged that the man who laid the foundations for the laws of nature may have been wrong.

The science world was left in shock when workers at the world’s largest physics lab announced they had recorded subatomic particles travelling faster than the speed of light

If the findings are proven to be accurate, they would overturn one of the pillars of the Standard Model of physics, which explains the way the universe and everything within it works.

Einstein’s theory of special relativity, proposed in 1905, states that nothing in the universe can travel faster than the speed of light in a vacuum. But researchers at the CERN lab near Geneva claim they have recorded neutrinos, a type of tiny particle, travelling faster than the barrier of 186,282 miles (299,792 kilometers) per second.

The results have so astounded researchers that American and Japanese scientists have been asked to verify the results before they are confirmed as a discovery.

Speed of light broken - an expert's view

If CERN scientists are correct in claiming they have observed particles travelling faster than the speed of light it would fundamentally change our understanding of the laws of physics, experts say.

Prof Jenny Thomas, of University College London, says the claims, if proven true, would call into question our very understanding of physics and the universe.

She said: "It would turn everything on its head. It is too awful to think about.

"The basic thing it that would be questioned is that there is an absolute speed limit which is the basis of special relativity and that is a huge building block of modern physics.

"It permeates everything to do with how we have modelled the universe and everything. It would be very hard to predict what the effects would be."

Special relativity is integral to the understanding of particle accelerators and the creation of particle beams, which are of crucial importance in fields like medicine and engineering, she said.

It could even be that the most famous equation of all time, E=mc2, turns out to be incorrect because it is based on the law of special relativity, Prof Thomas said.

Before any conclusions can be drawn, the CERN team's results will be checked by scientists across the globe including at Fermilab near Chicago, where a similar experiment known as Minos is based.

Prof Thomas – the co-spokesperson for the Minos project – said the team had thrown up similar results several years ago but had discounted them because the possible margin of error was too high.

She said: "Our errors were rather large so we dismissed it. Nothing is further from your belief than that the results might be correct.

"When I heard about the Cern results my first thought was that they must be wrong, there must be something they have not taken into account."

Potential errors could occur in the measurement of distance between the point the particle was created and where it was detected; the time it took to travel from one point to the other; or in the structure of the accelerator which the whole measurement relies upon.

Prof Thomas added: "I think everyone is sceptical. The scientists themselves have admitted they are sceptical but they cannot see what they have done wrong.

"We will repeat our experiment with higher precision, hopefully in the next six months."

The Fermilab team will then begin a second stage of their experiment, called Minos Plus, which is even more similar to the Cern trial and will deliver results accurate to one nanosecond, she said.

It is a matter of Honor as I see it! - Five NASCAR Drivers Decline President Obama's White House Invitation

I had the opportunity to meet Clinton, I declined. He was a dishonorable man, let alone president.

Five NASCAR Drivers Decline President Obama's White House Invitation - From Our Editors - SBNation.com
Jeff Gluck • Sep 1, 2011
NASCAR said Thursday that five drivers – Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart – will not be attending the White House visit due to "schedule conflicts."

They must be very busy people. Regardless of one's political views, the president is still the president – and an opportunity to speak with the leader of the free world is a rare and special one.

You'd think whatever photo shoots or sponsor appearances these drivers have lined up on Wednesday afternoon – if that's indeed the reason – could be rescheduled. After all, this is thePresident of the United States we're talking about here.

For a sport that prides itself on patriotism, having so many drivers turn down the president's invitation simply seems strange.

NO IT IS NOT! IS JEFF GLUCK A REPORTER OR COMMENTATOR? EITHER WAY HE IS WRONG.

Bad Luck? Bad Faith? Just Plain Bad President, it happens too often at the wrong time.

Aug 19, 2011
Obama blames a recalcitrant providence and an unpatriotic opposition for his woes.

“We had reversed the recession, avoided a depression, got the economy moving again. . . . But over the last six months, we’ve had a run of bad luck.”

— President Obama, Decorah, Iowa, August 15

A troubled nation wonders: How did we get mired in 9.1 percent unemployment, 0.9 percent growth, and an economic outlook so bad that the Federal Reserve pledges to keep interest rates at zero through mid-2013 — an admission that it sees little hope on the horizon?

Bad luck, explains our president.

Moreover, luck is the residue of design, as Branch Rickey immortally observed. And Obama’s design for the economy was a near–$1 trillion stimulus that left not a trace, the heavy hand of Obamacare, and a flurry of regulatory zeal that seeks to stifle everything from domestic energy production to Boeing’s manufacturing expansion into South Carolina.

He sowed, he reaps.

Today's Fake PC History makes Confederate plates a touchy issue for Perry

But which Flag?

Can't have confederate plates, can't have dead white men, can't have presidents who owned slaves, can't name teams after Indians, can't call Indians Indians...
It's worse than going to Church, school, to see parents and their church friends. The stupid paternalism of politicians and their do-gooder minions should be told where to go!
This fake issue could be reminiscent of the damn fool Confederate Flag issue in South Carolina where the capped toothed phony Sen. Ernest Hollings denounced the Confederate Flag flying on the South Carolina grounds. "Fritz" Hollings and the media both conveniently forgot that the SC Confederate Flag at the Capital started under Holling's approval when that phony was Governor.
Then there was the phony Senator Carol Moseley-Braun, who's fiancé was an outlandishly paid lobbyist for Nigeria, out of no where, had a sudden inspiration to make an issue of Congressional renewal of a federal patent for the insignia of the United Daughters of the Confederacy -- which featured the first national flag of the Confederacy encased in a wreath . Posters and Placards sprang out of no-where protesting the issue... Mirabile visu.

Park Rangers have become a bunch of PC Fools and have mismanaged the Park for Decades - Griz sow kills man in Yellowstone Park

Griz sow kills man in Yellowstone Park | Great Falls Tribune | greatfallstribune.com
Jul. 7, 2011
CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A grizzly bear killed a man who was hiking with his wife in Yellowstone National Park's backcountry after the couple apparently surprised the female bear and its cubs on Wednesday, park officials said.
It was the park's first fatal grizzly mauling since 1986, but the third in the Yellowstone region in just over a year amid ever-growing numbers of grizzlies and tourists roaming the same wild landscape of scalding-hot geysers and sweeping mountain vistas. The Wednesday morning attack happened just two days after the peak weekend for tourism in the park all year, on a trail close to Canyon Village near the middle of Yellowstone.

Here is the Dumb-Ass Op Ed from, who else, the - NYTimes, "Fire Up the Grill, Not the Atmosphere"

Did you know "FOOD is responsible for 10 to 30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions."? This unsubstantiated and ridiculous percentage spread is just made up and thrown out as fact, Al Gore style. The NY Times Op Ed writer, Brian Palmer is not only making up nonsense about outdoor cooking for the 4th of July, he is typical of the Time's style, trying to undermine the basic patriotism engendered in the holiday. It infers that it is not only American jingoism that is abhorrent to the 'international community', it is also a major cause of global warming. So all you rubes celebrating July 4th, feel guilty, feel very guilty. You are not only bad for the planet, you are bad for the planet's community.

Fire Up the Grill, Not the Atmosphere - NYTimes.com
By BRIAN PALMER June 29, 2011
[Excerpts]

FOOD is responsible for 10 to 30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. By many estimates, cooking represents more of a meal’s carbon footprint than transport. For certain vegetables, it accounts for more emissions than agriculture, transport and disposal combined. ...

Consider potato salad: a pale mixture of boiled potatoes and mayonnaise that is sometimes appetizing but always wasteful. An overwhelming majority of the energy in boiling goes into heating the water rather than cooking the potatoes.

Direct-heat methods are more efficient and usually tastier. Cubed and pan-fried potatoes take just 10 minutes to cook and require less than one-third the energy of boiling. [Alert Michelle Obama, fried food, tisk, tisk.]...

Now for the burgers and dogs. First, a green disclaimer. Beef is an environmental disaster, no matter how you cook it. However, if you can’t resist grilled cow, your big decision is between charcoal and propane.

Charcoal is made of wood, so the carbon it releases upon combustion is approximately equal to the carbon the tree it came from once removed from the atmosphere. In theory, charcoal should be less damaging than propane, which releases carbon that has been sequestered harmlessly underground for hundreds of millions of years. ...

Dept. of Ed., EPA, Green Czar will give $, so Maryland High Schools Now Requiring 'Environmental Literacy'

Not that there is high literacy in the Baltimore Schools for just reading and writing.

Maryland High Schools Now Requiring 'Environmental Literacy' | The Weekly Standard
JUN 28, 2011 • BY MARK HEMINGWAY

Sure, we're routinely graduating kids in this country that can't read or do basic math -- but hey, let's lard up the curriculum with a bunch of politicized nonsense, shall we?:

Maryland is the first state in the country to impose a new requirement to graduate from high school -- something called environmental literacy. ....

The foundation for jobs is basic literacy -- not environmental literacy. You simply can't have the latter without the former, and having driven through Baltimore recently, it seems really hard to believe that state schools are succeeding at their core educational mission sufficiently to devote new energy and resources extraneous curricular matters such as this.

The prescience of TOP GEAR (BBC) R.I.P. Tesla

Top Gear gave the Electric Sports Car, Tesla, every possible chance, but the car was a disaster. Instead of trying to fix it, the government subsidised Tesla threaten suit against the honest and funny Top Gear show on this dreadful and costly vehicle.

The American Spectator : R.I.P. Tesla

Chalk this up to "Lesson Not Learned."

The Tesla electric sports car is dead -- a victim of its own defective economics. This was not unpredictable.

The company created an electric version of the gas-powered Lotus sports car -- and tried to sell it for twice the price of the gas-powered version.

Just 1,650 of these electric lemons found people rich enough -- and dumb enough -- to spend $109,000 for a $51,845 Lotus Elise stripped of its perfectly good gasoline engine and converted to run on electricity.

Apparently, some forms of green still matter more than others.

More Proof of 'Global Warming'! Snow Falling in Colorado on Eve of Northern Hemisphere’s Summer Solstice

Snow Falling in Colorado on Eve of Northern Hemisphere’s Summer Solstice - Bloomberg
By Brian K. Sullivan - Jun 20, 2011

The calendar says summer starts tomorrow in the Northern Hemisphere. The snow falling in the mountains of Colorado tells a different story.

A storm that has prompted a tornado watch across Nebraska andKansas today also left 2 to 4 inches of snow in the Rocky Mountains, said Joe Ramey, a weather service meteorologist in Grand Junction, Colorado.

“It is unusual,” Ramey said. “Here it is the last day of spring.”

A winter storm advisory has been posted in the mountains of Colorado above 10,000 feet until 6 p.m. local time, and at least one tornado was reported in Kansas, according to the weather service. The Northern Hemisphere summer starts at 1:16 p.m. New York time tomorrow.

Ramey said the lingering effects of the La Nina ocean cooling are still playing havoc with local weather patterns. Normally at this time of year the daytime high temperature in Grand Junction, at an altitude of almost 4,600 feet, is 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius), according to the weather service. Yesterday it was 59, Ramey said.

We are all doomed, remember: Nuclear Winter: Poetry for the Apocalypse (1986)

Billions and Billions of Radioactive Particles predicted as our frozen doom? Might as well use Tarot Cards to predict the future. Now we've got the global warming ...er... "Climate Change" scam. Except global warming is more insidious with schemes to tax, legislate and control our lives based through national and international treaties that create a world police state.
"Sagan and Ehrlich picked as their "baseline case" a 5,000 megaton war. . . The results of such a war: a cloud of dust and smoke weighing 1.2 billion tons rapidly envelops the Northern Hemisphere and swiftly swirls into the Southern Hemisphere as well, blocking out 90% or more of the sun's light. Surface temperatures plunge to an average of --13° F and remain below freezing for three months, even if the war is fought in the Northern Hemisphere summer. Nothing can grow; those humans who survive the blast and radiation of the explosions freeze or starve to death. At best, Ehrlich figures, small bands of hunters and gatherers would be left in the Southern Hemisphere."

Dear Santa, please hurry here.

Our daughter Marie is only four

but her logic is as clear

as midnight broken by the searing light

of the bomb blast.

She's afraid you aren't coming

because the shelter has no chimney,

only an air vent to filter out death.

She smiled a little when we told her

she'd join you in heaven.

But the morphine is almost gone and

she won't be able to smile much longer.

And the Hoax goes on as the climate always changes!

Solar event that may have caused last ice age happening again? - International Business Times
June 14, 2011

New data released Tuesday at the annual meeting of the solar physics division of the American Astronomical Society in Las Cruces, New Mexico, may suggest that we are headed towards a solar event that hasn't happened in hundreds of years.

The new findings came from studies that found a missing jet stream in the solar interior, fading sunspots on the sun's visible surface, and changes in the corona and near the poles - all of which point towards declining solar activity at a time when our closest star should be showing signs of increasing activity.

There are some scientists at the conference believe that the current findings from the studies mean that we are at the beginning of a Maunder Minimum, a decades long period of low solar activity.

The last time such an event occurred was between 1645 to 1715. That solar event is thought to have caused the Little Ice Age that struck Europe and North America. Temperatures in those regions dropped by 1.8 to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit(1-1.5 degrees Celsius)

Greenie Weenie Scam - Where is the green jobs explosion?

Where is the green jobs explosion? « Hot Air

JUNE 13, 2011 BY ED MORRISSEY

When Barack Obama spoke of “necessarily bankrupting” coal-fueled electricity producers, he claimed that the explosion in “green jobs” would replace the workers dislocated by penalizing fossil fuels. So far, though, there is little evidence of any explosion in green jobs, or even significant job creation at all. As Politico reports, the Obama administration is having to fall back on “saved and created” language to describe its big investment in the green-collar field:

President Barack Obama heads to an energy plant in North Carolina on Monday to talk once again about the job-creating power of a green economy.
The catch? Nearly three years into Obama’s presidency, the White House can’t point to much solid evidence that significant numbers of Americans are scoring the green jobs the president has been touting. Monthly Labor Department employment reports say nothing about the new clean energy workforce, while an effort to document how many Americans actually make a living in the “green collar” field may not be done by November 2012.
Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers suggests 225,000 clean energy jobs were either created or preserved through the third quarter of 2010 thanks to more than $80 billion in the economic stimulus package. But those are estimates at best.

Birds of a Feather, nothing new, Darwin 101 & Weiner gave new meaning to "Franking" privileges

Klavan On The Culture » I Blame Women

So, then, ladies — what do you expect? All we guys want is for you to love us. If this is the sort of guy you follow after in droves, this is the sort of guy we’re encouraged to be. And I have to admit: I don’t get it. I look at Weiner and I see a rude, arrogant, entitled and clearly dishonest little piece of Democrat thoroughly convinced of his wholly non-existent superiority. Physically, he’s a dead ringer for a turtle that’s been pulled out of its shell. And as for his manners… did I mention he takes pictures of his absurdly eponymous package and sends them to women on Twitter!

And that’s the sort of stuff that wins you over, ladies? Well, if it is, expect to see a lot more of it. It’s Darwin 101: men evolve to attract the opposite sex. By natural law, women get what they want from men… it hardly seems fair for them to complain about it when it turns up in their inbox.

So women, here’s some free advice. Stop dating creeps. It only encourages them. The day Weiner can’t find a warm twit to tweet his weiner to is the day you twits find tweeter weiners to tweet your twits. I think you all know what I mean.

It also costs £92,000, or $148,396 as of 4/1/2001.
