… the first half of the book — Kunta Kinte’s life in Africa — was blatantly plagiarized from an earlier novel by anthropologist Harold Courlander, who sued Haley, accepting a $650,000 settlement after the court’s expert witness concluded that the copying in the book and the movie was “clear and irrefutable . . . significant and extensive.”Eric Fettmann contacted the History Channel. Their spokesman's reply was:
“History is taking everything into consideration as we move forward through the development process.”Apparently the producers at "The History Channel" are taking more of a developing consideration to History in general with historically significant programming like "Ax Men," "Ice Road Truckers," "American Pickers," and "Counting Cars."
Alex Haley, after he was caught in his "Roots" Hoax and was exposed in court still had the brazen mendacity to perpetuate his big lie. He encourage and participated in the bogus Kunte Kinte Plaque ceremony that was supposed to commemorate where the never existent slave never first set foot in America.
However, the point of this show was an exercise in politically correct wearisomeness. It was meant to show us moral outrage that within a couple of days of the bogus plaque's commemoration and placement, it was stolen. In place of the plaque a "business" card from the local KKK was found in its place. Here we had a ceremony with a stolen plaque for proven disreputable Hoaxer which was in turn stolen by a disreputable bunch of Bigots. It served the both right.
Ironies abound.
Unfortunately, the plaque was subsequently replaced with a new plaque, bench, statuary of a few children and the big Hoaxer himself.
They should have left well enough alone. m/r
