If you believe we're in a mess, then vote for Roland Straten
What facts were you looking at when you termed Bill Pascrell a "moderate" who "reaches out to Republicans" when endorsing his reelection to Congress, rather than supporting his challenger, Montclair resident Roland Straten? Either you were uninformed, or you chose to keep readers ignorant of Pascrell's actual voting record. Please allow me to fill in the blanks so that readers can make a truly informed judgment about Pascrell.
Pascrell voted for government-controlled health care, which cut $475 billion from Medicare; for the failed $814 billion stimulus that, we were assured, would keep unemployment below 8 percent (it's running closer to 10 percent) and for "cap and trade," which would restrict and heavily tax our energy use.
Pascrell voted for the 2010 financial reform regulation, which added layers of new bureaucratic burdens on small businesses while neglecting to address the two institutions at the root of our economic dysfunction, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Pascrell voted to provide taxpayer funding for community-organizing group ACORN, even after undercover reporters exposed ACORN workers giving tax avoidance advice and support for a prostitution "business" being staffed with underage illegal immigrant girls.
Pascrell voted to send troops into harm's way in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Once in harm's way, Pascrell voted against funding those troops.
Pascrell voted with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Party leadership on every key vote, marching in lockstep as they've spent and borrowed our country to the brink of bankruptcy.
Readers approving of Bill Pascrell's record should follow The Montclair Times' endorsement of him. If not, then I urge them to reject Pascrell and elect businessman and engineer Roland Straten. With Roland's help, Congress can begin reversing its disastrous course.
