Possible new human ancestor found in Siberia | Reuters
About 30,000 years ago Neanderthals melted away. I've heard arguments that they mated with Modern Homo-Sapiens and became part of the Eurasian human group. There is also the argument that Neanderthals were not of the same specie and died off because they were less suited to compete with the invading Modern Humans. Maybe it was a mix of interbreeding and inability to compete. If you can't beat-um, join-um, all the way.
Stranger seeming things can breed that look less alike than Modern Man and Neanderthals. Some mammals come to mind that are the same species that can breed, such as ponies and Clydesdale's Draft Horses, dachshunds and Newfoundland dogs too.
The imagery is not to be imagined though.
