DON'T STEP BACK!

My foot was about to step into a plastic tub filled with snakes. Poisonous brown snakes. A small man was on his haunches, grabbing snakes by the head, then shoving the head down on a board that had a nail sticking out. The head was pierced by the nail. Then the snakes were gutted and skinned. It was done very fast. I was busy watching the strange animal varieties that were being butchered for market and I hadn't paid attention to what was happening behind me at ground level. I did not see any bats prepared for meals, but just about everything else.
My guide took me to an open air food market in Shenzhen, China. This was in the last century when it was still a provincial border outpost of, what was then, Canton Province. At that time, they were still calling Peking, Peking.
