For two days, a single question has dominated headlines around the globe: Where in the world is Edward Snowden? Here’s what we know so far and how:

Sunday, June 23

• A few minutes after 4 a.m. eastern standard time, Hong Kong’s government releases a statement saying Mr. Snowden left the country on June 23 “on his own accord for a third country through a lawful and normal channel.” The statement does not say where he went.

• WikiLeaks releases a series of statements on Twitter, first counting down the minutes to Mr. Snowden’s touch-down in Moscow and later confirming his Aeroflot flight number and arrival at Sheremetyevo Airport. The group says Mr. Snowden is travelling with WikiLeaks representative Sarah Harrison.

• Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño writes on Twitter: “The Government of Ecuador has received an asylum request from Edward J. #Snowden.”

• The flight from Hong Kong touches down in Moscow just after 9 a.m. eastern-standard time. Journalists watching the flow of passengers departing the plane at Sheremetyevo Airport can’t find Mr. Snowden. He’s not visible at the capsule hotel connected to the terminal. ...

Bankrolled by the oil and gas wealth of Qatar, now hiring 800 staff members and opening 12 news bureaus across the United States, Al Jazeera will soon be coming to a television near you. From its Doha headquarters, the media empire of Qatar’s royal family is launching a new channel dubbed Al Jazeera America, devoted to in-depth coverage of the United States. When it goes live later this year, its flagship primetime show, America Tonight, will be broadcast from a studio in Washington’s Newseum—a high-tech museum of news and journalism with the self-described mission of “educating the public about the value of a free press in a free society.”

Is anything wrong with that picture? Plenty, if you consider that Al Jazeera is effectively an arm of the government of Qatar, a Middle East monarchy long on oil money and short on freedom. According to the State Department’s 2012 Human Rights Report, Qatar has no independent broadcast media and all print media are owned by “Members of the ruling family or proprietors who enjoyed close ties to government officials.” Journalists censor themselves due to “political and economic pressures.” The government forbids political parties, censors the Internet, and strictly regulates the right of assembly. Foreign residents, who make up the bulk of Qatar’s population, are prohibited by law from criticizing the emir. ...

It’s easy to see what Al Jazeera gets from this arrangement. But what is the Newseum getting? Or, to put it in dollar terms, how much? Al Jazeera America, headquartered in New York, did not return my phone calls. When I phoned the Newseum press office recently to ask for financial details of the Al Jazeera arrangements, it turned out that officials of this institution dedicated to reporting would not answer such questions from a reporter. Newseum media relations manager Jonathan Thompson did confirm that while a number of other news organizations rent temporary studio space at the Newseum, “Al Jazeera will be the only news organization that has a more permanent contract.”

If the bleak reckoning of Reputation.com’s Howard Bragman is to be believed, Paula Deen “will survive” her recent ordeal, “but she will never be whole again.”

This is because, in the choice words of Bill Maher, “she f****d up.” Court documents revealed last week show Deen being asked under oath whether she had used the N-word before. “Yes, of course,” she replied, although “it’s been a very long time.” For this admission, the Food Network fired her.

The gulf between the hard realities of the global energy market and the Obama administration’s energy policies grows wider by the day.

On Wednesday, Heather Zichal, the White House coordinator for energy and climate change, told a group of reporters that Obama, knowing that climate change is “a legacy issue,” will soon issue new rules to limit carbon-dioxide emissions from electricity-generation plants. “After all that we’ve done, after all that historic progress in the first four years, we are well poised to take meaningful action for the second term,” Zichal said.

Obama’s looming skein of regulations is being promoted just one week after BP issued its latest Statistical Review of World Energy, which provides yet more proof of two indisputable facts: Even without more regulations from the White House or the EPA, the U.S. continues to lead the world in reducing carbon-dioxide emissions. And while the U.S. may be cutting its coal use (and, therefore, its carbon-dioxide emissions), the rest of the world continues to binge on coal. ...

... The biggest factor, though, in America’s success in cutting emissions has been the shale gale. A tsunami of natural-gas production has been unleashed in recent years thanks to continuing improvements in extended-reach horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Domestic natural-gas production was up 4.7 percent last year, to a record 65.7 billion cubic feet per day. That increase in production has led to cheaper natural gas, and that cheap gas is displacing coal at the power plant.

A recent video from a President Obama-aligned group is under fire from fact-checkers for claiming hundreds of House members voted to call climate change a "hoax" -- namely, because they didn't. 

The video from Organizing for Action cleverly splices together quotes from Republican climate change skeptics while building up to the factoid about the vote, which was on an amendment to a broader bill in 2011. 

The video then includes the following text: "Number of House members who voted in 2011 that climate change was a 'hoax': 240." 

The amendment, though, did not include the word hoax, and the circumstances of the vote were far more complicated than the video portrayed. FactCheck.org and The Washington Post have both called out the claim as inaccurate, with the Post giving it four "Pinocchios," which is the worst score for the truthfulness the paper gives out. 

"In this case, the Obama group has twisted the meaning of a relatively minor amendment -- which was clearly intended to become fodder for future campaign ads," the Post wrote. 

The amendment in question was introduced by Democrats, in the course of debate over a Republican bill that dealt with regulation, not the science of climate change itself. The Republican bill was aimed at barring the EPA from regulating carbon dioxide and other gases and giving that power to Congress.

Obama unveils climate change plan that goes around Congress - The Hill's E2-Wire

President Obama is launching fresh battles over climate change with plans to curb emissions using executive powers that sidestep Congress — including controversial rules to cut carbon pollution from existing power plants. [WATCH VIDEO]

The wide-ranging plan, which Obama will tout in a speech later Tuesday, also beefs up federal efforts to help deploy low-carbon and renewable energy, and has programs to help harden communities against climate-fueled extreme weather.

Internationally, it seeks to knock down trade barriers to climate-friendly goods and services; enhance cooperation with India, China and other big carbon emitters; and curb U.S. support for overseas coal plant construction, among many other steps.

The plan is designed to get around Congress, where major climate bills have no political traction. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Monday that Obama’s executive approach “reflects reality.” 

But the plan, especially its controversial Environmental Protection Agency   power plant regulations, will nonetheless face big hurdles on and off Capitol Hill.
