Christ Church decision provokes significant response from inside – and outside – community

Christ Church’s decision to relocate plaques honoring two of its most famous members, George Washington and Robert E. Lee, from its worship space no later than summer 2018 went viral over the weekend, earning headlines of varying tones from the Washington Post, Washington Times, CNN, National Review and a variety of blogs and websites.
The historic Episcopal church, located prominently on Old Town’s main corridor, announced the decision in an email to congregation members on Oct. 26 after members of its vestry voted unanimously to relocate the plaques.
The church began considering the issue in the summer; seven listening sessions and many one-on-one conversations with parishioners were held in September.
The church said the decision to remove the plaques, which were erected in 1870 following the Civil War, was an effort to make visitors to the church feel more welcome, saying in the email, “… some visitors and guests who worship with us choose not to return because they receive an unintended message from the prominent presence of the plaques.”

Bergdahl dishonorably discharged, no jail time after emotional trial

President Trump tweeted Friday that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's sentence-- a dishonorable discharge, but no prison time for leaving his post in June 2009 -- was a "complete and total disgrace."

More than eight years after Bergdahl walked off his base in Afghanistan -- and unwittingly into the clutches of the Taliban -- Bergdahl walked out of a North Carolina courtroom a free man Friday. Bergdahl, who pleaded guilty to endangering his comrades, was fined, reduced in rank to E1 and dishonorably discharged -- but he received no prison time.

Trump, aboard Air Force One en route to meetings in Asia, tweeted his disapproval of the sentence.

U.S. Republicans seek special counsel's removal from Russia probe

Representatives Matt Gaetz, Andy Biggs and Louis Gohmert accused Mueller of a conflict of interest because he was director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation when former President Barack Obama’s administration approved an agreement allowing a Russian company to buy a Canadian company that owned 20 percent of U.S. uranium supplies.

President Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans have been calling for an investigation into the Uranium One deal, amid news of Mueller’s first indictments of Trump associates as the special counsel investigates allegations that the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow.

Moscow denies any effort to influence the election, and Trump has dismissed the investigation as a “witch hunt.”

A 19-year-old man who shot himself in the penis after allegedly holding up a South Side hotdog stand Tuesday won’t be going home when he’s released from the hospital.
Terrion Pouncy remained at Christ Hospital recovering from his injuries on Thursday, missing a bond hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on two counts of armed robbery.
Pouncy was arrested at the Oak Lawn hospital not long after he was found slumped on the steps of a home across the street from a West Pullman restaurant that Chicago Police say he robbed at gunpoint about 6 a.m. on Halloween.
Judge Stephanie Miller ordered him held without bond.
Pouncy was unable to run further because of the pain of a self-inflicted gunshot wound suffered when tried to adjust the .38-caliber pistol in his waistband as he ran off after robbing Maxwell Street Express at 116th and Halsted, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Erin Antonietti said in court.

Jennifer Schwartz Berky, a New York county legislator, is probably wishing that she'd handled her recent encounter with police better now that it has gone public.

At first, she did everything she could to get out of the speeding ticket, arguing she was going the same speed as everyone else and was flat broke. "It's really hard for me!" she wailed.

Then, Berky flipped out -- sobbing, screaming, hyperventilating and claiming repeatedly to have PTSD.

"I always do everything right and I always follow the law!" Berky cried.

When she saw that her histrionics weren't having the desired effect, she changed course.

"I don't feel safe anymore," she said. "I don't feel safe here. I don't feel safe around you!"

‘ISIS lives forever’: Uzbek man, 29, was planning New York attack for WEEKS and had knives along with ISIS flag and notes in truck when he killed eight and injured 12 by mowing them down on bike path

• Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, 29, followed ISIS instructions for truck attacks which he found on social media
• Police say the father-of-three had been planning the attack for weeks before he carried it out on Halloween 
• Inside the Home Depot truck he used, police found notes written in Arabic which said ISIS would live forever
• They also found 'multiple' knives and Saipov's pellet gun and paint gun were recovered at the scene
• He remains at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan under arrest and is said to have boasted during questioning

The driver of a truck which mowed down innocent people in New York on Tuesday, killing eight and injuring 12, pledged his allegiance to ISIS before the attack and had been planning it for weeks. 

Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, 29, remains in custody in the hospital after being shot in the stomach by an NYPD officer at Chambers Street in Tribeca on Tuesday afternoon.

At a press conference on Wednesday morning, New York City officials said he followed replicated previous ISIS attacks involving trucks and followed the terror group's strategy, which they have mapped out on social media, 'to a T.'  

Nine people remain in hospital with serious injuries including one person who has undergone a double amputation. Another three who were hospitalized have been since been released. 

Eight people died including six foreign tourists, five of whom were from Argentina and one who was Belgian. The other two victims were American. 

Saipov spoke to police from his hospital bed at Bellevue Hospital on Tuesday night. Sources said he appeared 'proud' throughout the interrogation. 

In the Home Depot truck which he used to carry out the attack, police found handwritten notes in Arabic of the that said 'ISIS would endure forever,' according to officials who spoke on Wednesday to declare him a 'depraved coward'.
