Next time you mislay your keys, can’t recall basic O-level history or find yourself in trouble again on your wedding anniversary, don’t blame old age — blame your brain’s evolved mechanisms for neuronal transience.
Scientists have claimed that forgetting things may not always imply you are scatterbrained. Instead, it could be crucial to coping with new challenges.
“We think an important part of being intelligent is about forgetting the details of past experiences,” Blake Richards, of the University of Toronto, said. He and a colleague argue in the journal Neuron that things you forget are as important for brain efficiency as those you remember. As a consequence, the brain actively promotes forgetting.

Venezuelan Crisis Continues

While most eyes are on Syria, Russia and even China in the realm of international conflicts and crises, a crisis is brewing to our south. Since the death of Hugo Chavez in 2013, the “socialist paradise” of Venezuela hasn’t been much of a paradise, not that it was before. Political rights have all but vanished, oil production is declining, people are starving, and drug trafficking has increased. An individual with ties to the opposition that I heard speak at an event this spring described it as a “Narco-State”.

There isn’t much going right in Venezuela at the moment, and the past two months have been particularly bleak. In April, protests kicked off, as Venezuelans tired of Maduro’s terrible rule demanded an election. In response to these protests, the Venezuelan national guard and other security forces have used brutal tactics. At least 70 protesters have been killed since April, and hundreds of others have been injured and thousands have been arrested.

Venezuela’s neighbors have noticed these human rights abuses. At an Organization of American States summit in Cancun, Mexico on Wednesday, a vote to rebuke Venezuela failed to pass. While 20 countries voted to condemn the actions of Maduro’s regime, this was three short of the required 23 for a two-thirds majority. The United States and Mexico led the push against Maduro, while leftist Bolivia and Nicaragua backed Venezuela, several Caribbean countries abstained from voting. While many top diplomats from other countries were present, Secretary Tillerson canceled last minute, likely damaging US credibility. With this defeat, concerned countries will have difficulty acting as a regional bloc.

The MSNBC show is a window on a tiresome and deluded chattering class.

Perhaps there is no better window on the awfulness of the self-appointed New York-to-DC ruling class than MSNBC’s Morning Joe. The show revolves around a collection of chattering-class bores who devote the start of their day to seconding each other’s shallow and smug criticisms of Trump. The women make faces; the men roll their eyes.

Co-host Mika Brzezinski is a feminist who lectures other women on the need to show firmness in a man’s world. Yet she spends most of the show acting like a prim, entitled Victorian-era dingbat on a fainting couch. She grips her chair for balance while she makes faux-terrified faces, then turns to “Joe” for guidance on how to address this or that Trump “outrage.” “Joe” is the vainglorious former Congressman Joe Scarborough. The two are engaged, but one suspects the relationship won’t last Trump’s two terms.
Scarborough resembles a beady-eyed frat boy whom one can more easily imagine bellowing over a keg than cracking open a serious book. Yet he casts himself as Trump’s moral and intellectual better. Trump, you see, lacks Joe’s “substance.”

  The left has a problem.
Americans are doing all the wrong things. They’re voting for Republicans, reading conservative sites and donating to conservative organizations. Something needs to be done about it. Something is being done.
Post a conservative story on Facebook or search for it on Google and out pops Snopes, a partisan site, to warn you of wrongthinking. And, until recently, when you searched for a conservative organization on Guidestar, out popped the Southern Poverty Law Center to accuse you and it of being deplorable bigots.
The Southern Poverty Law Center and Snopes are left-wing partisan groups with no qualifications to do anything except hate conservatives. The SPLC’s list of hate groups includes numerous individuals, including me, also listed until recently as a hate group was a sign outside a Pennsylvania bar.

Morris Dees, a mail order guru and cut rate lawyer for a KKK thug, built the Southern Poverty Law Center into one of the greatest mail order scams on earth. Harper’s Magazine dubbed the SPLC a “fraud” that casually throws around the “hate group” label, “shuts down debate” and “stifles free speech”.
  The FBI dumped SPLC’s scam artists, but Guidestar decided to help the left-wing group stifle speech.

Carl Bernstein is calling on journalists to commit to a "different kind of reporting" in response to a "malignant presidency" unlike any the country has seen before.
"We're in foreign territory," Bernstein said Friday on CNN's "New Day."
He added, "We have never been in a malignant presidency like this before. It calls on our leaders, it calls on our journalists to do a different kind of reporting, a different kind of dealing with this presidency and the president."

Bernstein, best known for his investigative reporting that shed light on the Watergate scandal leading to President Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974, has previously said Trump's attacks on the press are "more treacherous than Nixon's."

First on CNN: Kamala Harris maneuvers to help 2018 Democrats -- and build a national profile

Washington (CNN)Sen. Kamala Harris is using her newfound progressive stardom to raise money for her Democratic colleagues -- and amplifying buzz about the California freshman as a prospect for the party's 2020 presidential nomination in the process.

In the first six months of 2017, Harris has raised more than $600,000 for a dozen Senate colleagues -- including $365,000 from small-dollar online contributions, her aides said.

The email list Harris has used to raise the bulk of that money is 10 times the size it was at this time last year, during her Senate campaign. She's used that list to raise money for incumbents up for re-election in the 2018 cycle, including Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, Montana Sen. Jon Tester and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Harris is also planning a travel schedule in the fall to raise money for Democratic Senate incumbents as well as the challengers for seven Republican-held House seats in California that the party is targeting.
