WASHINGTON — Leslie James Pickering noticed something odd in his mail last September: A handwritten card, apparently delivered by mistake, with instructions for postal workers to pay special attention to the letters and packages sent to his home.

“Show all mail to supv” — supervisor — “for copying prior to going out on the street,” read the card. It included Mr. Pickering’s name, address and the type of mail that needed to be monitored. The word “confidential” was highlighted in green.

“It was a bit of a shock to see it,” said Mr. Pickering, who owns a small bookstore in Buffalo. More than a decade ago, he was a spokesman for the Earth Liberation Front, a radical environmental group labeled eco-terrorists by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Postal officials subsequently confirmed they were indeed tracking Mr. Pickering’s mail but told him nothing else.

As the world focuses on the high-tech spying of the National Security Agency, the misplaced card offers a rare glimpse inside the seemingly low-tech but prevalent snooping of the United States Postal Service.

More Americans View Blacks As Racist Than Whites, Hispanics - Rasmussen Reports™

Americans consider blacks more likely to be racist than whites and Hispanics in this country.

Thirty-seven percent (37%) of American Adults think most black Americans are racist, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Just 15% consider most white Americans racist, while 18% say the same of most Hispanic Americans. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

There is a huge ideological difference on this topic. Among conservative Americans, 49% consider most blacks racist, and only 12% see most whites that way. Among liberal voters, 27% see most white Americans as racist, and 21% say the same about black Americans.

From a partisan perspective, 49% of Republicans see most black Americans as racist, along with 36% of unaffiliated adults and 29% of Democrats.

Among black Americans, 31% think most blacks are racist, while 24% consider most whites racist and 15% view most Hispanics that way.

The Obama administration will not penalize businesses that do not provide health insurance in 2014, the Treasury Department announced Tuesday.

Instead, it will delay enforcement of a major Affordable Care Act requirement that all employers with more than 50 employees provide coverage to their workers until 2015.

The administration said it would postpone the provision after hearing significant concerns from employers about the challenges of implementing it.

“We have heard concerns about the complexity of the requirements and the need for more time to implement them effectively,” Mark Mazur, Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy, wrote in a late Tuesday blog post. “We recognize that the vast majority of businesses that will need to do this reporting already provide health insurance to their workers, and we want to make sure it is easy for others to do so.”

The Affordable Care Act requires all employers with more than 50 full-time workers provide health insurance or pay steep fines. That policy had raised concerns about companies downsizing their workforce or cutting workers’ hours in order to dodge the new mandate.

In delaying the enforcement of that rule, the White House sidesteps those challenges for one year. It is also the second significant interruption for the Affordable Care Act, following a one-year delay on key functions of the small business insurance marketplaces.

Together, the moves could draw criticism that the administration will not be able to put into effect its signature legislative accomplishment on schedule.

A man was captured on a nanny cam breaking in and then brutally assaulting a mother inside of her Millburn, N.J. home, right in front of her 3-year-old daughter.

For days, police worked to identify a suspect with no luck, but on Friday they had a breakthrough. Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Millburn Police Chief Gregory Weber announced that warrants had been issued for the arrest of Shawn Custis, 42, whose last known residence was in Newark.

About an hour after that information was released, Custis was arrested along 10th Avenue in the Inwood section of Manhattan by FBI agents, CBS 2 reported.

To save its safety net, Pennsylvania is changing the name of its Department of Public Welfare.

Pennsylvania's safety net is in trouble. State Republicans are increasingly critical of it, and, despite an increase from last year, the state's new budget doesn't boost welfare spending to the level desired by Republican Gov. Tom Corbett. But state lawmakers have a way to save Pennsylvania's Department of Public Welfare: Change the name.

The state House approved a bill Monday night that will gradually change the name of the department to the Department of Human Services. The department, which was awarded $11 billion in the budget approved last week, oversees a wide range of safety-net programs, from medical care to services for the elderly, the poor, and those with special needs. The name change has the support of the United Way, state Republicans, and thehead of the department. When you look at polling around "welfare," it's easy to see why.

When respondents to a June NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll were asked to identify the factor "most responsible for the continuing problem of poverty," the most popular answer given was "too much welfare that prevents initiative."

Take most any contemporary issue, and the theme of elite progressivism predominates.

Higher education? A visitor from Mars would note that the current system of universities and colleges is designed to promote the interests of an elite at the expense of the middle and lower-middle classes. UCLA, Yale, and even CSUStanislaus run on premises far more reactionary and class-based than does Wal-Mart. The teaching loads and course responsibilities of tenured full professors have declined over the last half-century, while the percentage of units taught by graduate students and part-time faculty, with few benefits and low pay, has soared. ...

Parlez-vous polite? Paris manual teaches how to not be rude to tourists

I saw this and recalled it was not the everyday Parisians who were rude. Years ago, on the Isle de Cite, a lovely gentleman sought me out because I was obviously American. He wanted to speak in English, talk about how grateful he was for the Americans for the liberation and just spend some time talking. I wished I had spent more time with him.
The rude people I encountered in Paris were the government institution employees. These are exactly the people who are paid to treat the tourists with courtesy and helpfulness, yet treat them the worst.

Yet she is the darling of government funded Special Historical Events and keeps showing up on NBC to give her piffle opinions that no one cares about or remembers. But she DOES gives it from the proper, lefty, perspective.
This boring hag went away after she joined the infamous ranks of history's plagiarizing thieves that included Joseph Ellis, Alex Haley and Stephen Ambrose. This a group of media and publicity hounds who considered themselves as better than mere thieves and not to be challenged. Unfortunately for us, they came back anyway. Doris Kearns Goodwin at Gettysburg: A Few Inappropriate Remarks

On Sunday, a stunned audience sat in silence as Doris Kearns Goodwin turned the keynote address at the opening ceremony for the 150th anniverary of the Battle of Gettysburg into a political lecture focusing on women's and gay rights.

Missing from much of her keynote: Gettysburg. 

Self-centered, insular, and oblivious to the occasion, the historian who was infamously caught plagiarizing merely recycled much of what she has said before about herself in previous speeches. And her rambling, self-promoting, and borderline inappropriate lecture touched upon nearly everything except for the heroic sacrifices made on that battlefield.

In so doing, she desecrated the hallowed land on which she spoke, dishonored Gettysburg's honored dead, and disrespected the nearly 8,000 Americans in attendance who did not come to Gettysburg to hear about her life's story and a progressive history lecture. 

Before even referencing President Abraham Lincoln, Kearns Goodwin started her speech by mentioning President Lyndon Johnson. In fact, more of her speech was devoted to Johnson and herself than to Lincoln, Grant, Lee, and Gettysburg. ...
