For years now, I have experienced the strange sense of living in a Britain that is abandoning its identity, and might even disintegrate. The country is the fourth or fifth largest economy in the world. Educated and creative people are all around. The proposition that others had to govern us has always been incomprehensible. Did the British lose an empire only to be incorporated in someone else’s empire?

Part of the strangeness was that Conservative prime ministers advocated this surrender. Mrs. Thatcher, a patriot, resisted only when she was out of office. Apparently the Conservative party could not stand up for its beliefs and would let itself be destroyed. David Cameron has at last made a speech to the contrary. It is not the Churchillian speech required by the circumstances, but a good speech none the less. He claims — I imagine masking the truth — to want the country to stay in the European Union. He proposes to negotiate over the next four years — repeat four — for terms that allow for membership and independence. Then a referendum in 2017 will decide whether Britain is to stay in or get out. One of the many fools who populate the Obama administration instantly spouted that the United States wants Britain to stay in, apparently unaware that in this course of action America’s most reliable ally would become a small part of a bloc designed to stand against America. The polls gave Cameron a boost. A large unanswered question is what he will do if the Europeans refuse to negotiate. It’s been a long decline, and Cameron can be accused of playing for more time, but the first irreversible step has been taken, and Britain at last looks likely to leave the EU and recover itself.

Coincidental with Cameron’s speech, someone called Neelie Kroes illustrated why Britain must have nothing to do with the EU. Not one in a hundred thousand Brits have heard of this Dutch lady, who occupies the grand position of vice president of the European Commission (the body akin to a civil service, unelected, but giving the orders). She commissioned a report that recommends EU control of the media in every country: watchdogs, fines, permanent banning of journalists, all to ensure that standards “comply with European values.” The blood freezes.

On a different note, the death of Robert Kee reminds me of something he used to tell. Robert was a television personality, a novelist and historian of Irish troubles. A pilot in the war, he had been shot down, captured and finished up in a prisoner-of-war camp some miles outside Dresden. In February 1945, Stalin requested the bombing of Dresden to prevent German reinforcements coming through to the eastern front. The British consented, and are sometimes accused of committing a war crime. Robert in his camp could see the night sky illuminated by flames, and he and the other prisoners cheered and sang the national anthem.

Quick quiz. An inquiry set up by the UN Human Rights Council has just released a draft report condemning:
A) Iran
B) China
C) Sri Lanka
D) Israel
The answer, of course, is D — Israel. This is yet another UN document that deserves to be filed in the same dustbin as the ugly and discredited Goldstone report ^[1]. Never mind Iran, China, Sri Lanka et al. As the Geneva-based monitoring group, UN Watch, points out, ^[2] since the UN set up its “reformed” Human Rights Council in 2006, “there have been seven one-sided inquiry missions on Israel, and only five on the rest of the world combined. Mass atrocities committed by Iran, China, or Sri Lanka, for example, have never been subjected to a single HRC inquiry.”
This latest report, due to be formally presented to the Council in March, is captioned “Advanced Unedited Version.” I assume they meant to say  ”Advance,” since there is nothing advanced about this product. It’s the latest in a long series of exhibits that attest not to the realities of the Middle East, but to the unrelenting bigotry of what is supposed to be the UN’s leading human rights body. The full title – brace yourself, this is one of those UN doozies — is: “Report of the independent international fact-finding mission to investigate the implications of the Israeli settlements on the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of the Palestinian people, throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.”
The three “high-level experts” appointed by the president of the Human Rights Council to produce this document arrogate to themselves, in its introduction, a description of their work as “Guided by the principles of ‘do no harm,’ independence, impartiality, objectivity, transparency, confidentiality, integrity and professionalism…” Yes, and pigs can fly.

Chuck Hagel: Unworthy of Confirmation

Chuck Hagel’s battle to become the next Secretary of Defense, succeeding Leon Panetta, took center stage on Thursday at his Senate confirmation hearing.  At times appearing like a deer caught in the headlights, he was unable to handle the tough questions addressed at his record. He appeared at times dazed, bewildered and unable to defend his record of disturbing policy positions, many of which he disavowed during the hearing and could not explain why. In light of his performance, those senators who had been undecided about confirming Hagel certainly have ample reason now to join with their conservative colleagues in refusing to send a candidate so unworthy to the Pentagon.
Things got off to a rocky start when a protester demanding benefits for gay and lesbian families who serve in the military stood up holding a sign that said, “We serve equally. We deserve equality.” But this friendly fire from the Left was only the beginning.
Senator Carl Levin (D-MI), the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, tried to provide some air cover for Hagel by kicking off the hearing with warm praise for Hagel’s military record and service in the Senate.  After trying to frame the questions that Hagel would need to answer to satisfy his critics and admitting that he had his own concerns with Hagel’s positions on unconditional talks with Iran, opposition to unilateral sanctions and willingness to engage with Hamas, Senator Levin did not wait for Hagel’s answers. “Sen. Hagel certainly has those critically important qualifications to lead the Department of Defense,” he said in providing his endorsement.
Then came the turn of Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), the new ranking Republican on the Armed Services Committee.  Inhofe has serious problems with the Hagel nomination. First, he complained that he had not received the information on Hagel’s finances that he had requested. Then he took a shot at Hagel’s lack of judgment on the critical national security issues facing the nation.
“We are just too philosophically opposed on the pressing issues facing our country for me to support his nomination,” Senator Inhofe said. “His record demonstrates what I view as a lack of sound judgment and steadfast support for policies that diminish U.S. power and influence.”

Hector Timerman has refused to meet representatives of the Falkland Islands government, which Argentina does not recognise as legitimate.

The islanders were expected to tell Mr Timerman that Buenos Aires should respect islanders' rights and leave them in peace. ....

Argentine president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has in recent years strongly asserted her country's demands for the Falklands to come under its sovereignty despite the opposition of the islanders.

Earlier this month, she had an advert published in British newspapers claiming that Argentina had been stripped of the islands in "a blatant exercise of 19th century colonialism".

David Cameron has repeatedly insisted the residents of the Falklands must decide their own future and a referendum on the islands' political status is to be held in March.

Atlanta • A student opened fire at his middle school Thursday afternoon, wounding a 14-year-old in the neck before an armed officer working at the school was able to get the gun away, police said.

Multiple shots were fired in the courtyard of Price Middle School just south of downtown around 1:50 p.m. and the one boy was hit, Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said. In the aftermath, a teacher received minor cuts, he said. ...

... The armed resource officer who took the gun away was off-duty and at the school, but police didn’t release details on him or whether he is regularly at Price. Since 20 children and six adults were shot to death at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in December, calls for armed officers in every school have resonated across the country.

Just because you might be expecting something doesn’t mean you can’t be disappointed when it happens.
Following December’s massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, we have witnessed the spectacle of politicians at every level of government tripping over each other to race before the cameras and proclaim their outrage, not at the perpetrator of the atrocity, but rather at the many law-abiding Americans who are employed in the making of firearms and the many, many more who use them recreationally.  Something must be done, they tell us, “for the children.”  That the “something” might be wholly ineffectual or even counterproductive in the fight against crime is of little significance when the real goal is to see one’s name in the headlines and one’s face on television.
To the surprise of no one who has followed the man’s career, joining President Obama, Vice President Biden, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and so many others in this farcical display is Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a lifelong politician who, facing the end of his term in office, seeks to hold aloft his profile — and his prospects for some future position at the public trough — by means of the type of shameless pandering for which he is well known.  Mr. Villaraigosa has called on the managers for the city’s three pension funds to divest from any holdings ^[1] in companies that manufacture so-called assault weapons.  “It’s a moral and financial imperative to end our relationship with these companies,” said Mr.Villaraigosa, quoted in the Los Angeles Times, whose story added that it was unclear how much city pension money was invested in companies that make firearms.  “I don’t want to make a quarter, not a penny, not a dime off of companies that make those weapons of war,” he said.
Put aside for the moment the fact that “assault weapon” is a term devoid of meaning other than to describe rifles whose appearance is in some quarters considered sinister.  There is a further, even deeper incongruity in the mayor’s demand.  The city of Los Angeles, more specifically its police department, is a customer for some of the very companies whose products he finds so distasteful.  In the LAPD arsenal are weapons from Glock, Colt, Beretta, and Heckler & Koch, among others.  And thank heavens for them, for among the department’s 10,000 officers are those who have defended their own and others’ lives with just these weapons.
The above named manufacturers are privately held, so the mayor’s investment advice will have little impact on them and most other firearms companies.

Who Was the Real Henry Wallace?

Henry Wallace is a name that is recognized by few Americans today, even though he served as 33rd vice-president of the United States (January 1941 to January 1945), during Franklin Roosevelt’s third term.  Roosevelt dropped Wallace from the ticket for his fourth campaign for the White House, choosing Harry Truman instead. Why was Wallace a political hot potato?

Henry Wallace’s devotion to FDR’s New Deal wasn’t in question. Wallace wholeheartedly believed in the big government ideas of FDR’s administration, including the expanding role of government in telling farmers what they could grow, how much they could charge for their products, and even paying farmers not to produce on certain parcels of land. He faithfully served FDR for seven years as Secretary of Agriculture, then stepped up to become his number two man. Wallace was sure that he would be included on the ticket for FDR’s fourth term.

Of all the men who have served as vice-president, Henry Wallace was possibly the weirdest individual with views farthest to the left on the political spectrum. He graduated from Iowa State in 1910 with a degree in animal husbandry and became an expert on hybridized corn.  Of course, that isn’t what made him unusual. Wallace traveled widely in the Far East, studying plants and also indulging in what amounted to pilgrimages to speak with various gurus. He searched for truth in a series of oddball religions and for years followed the teachings of Russian mystic agronomist Nicholas Roerich. Wallace became a huge admirer of the Soviet Union under Josef Stalin and thought such a society could become a socialist utopia. If you thought Al Gore was a media darling, you haven’t seen his latest book tour. Although Gore has been selective in which outlets he appears on to promote his new book, “The Future,” they haven’t treated the former vice president with kid gloves. From “Today” to “Morning Joe” to “Late Show with David Letterman” to “The Daily Show,” Gore has come under attack by his interviewers for his decision to sell Current TV to Al Jazeera.
