CHARLOTTE,N.C. — Dozens of protesters on Tuesday shut down an intersection blocks from the Democratic National Convention here, drawing hundreds of police officers and curious onlookers as they chanted against corporate greed, drone missiles and all manner of political woes.

Officers armed with wooden bats, paintball guns and plastic handcuffs lined the perimeter of East Stonewall Street and South Caldwell Street while cheers of “Free Manning, Arrest Barack” and “You are the army of the rich” rose from men and women sitting and standing in the road. Bradley Manning is the Army private accused of leaking vast archives of classified U.S. documents to the Wikileaks whistleblower website in 2010.

Ed Hunt, a 59-year-old veteran from Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., said the ultimate goal for the demonstrators was that convention-goers see that “this is happening, that we have the right to protest.”

“There’s so much to change,” he added. “There’s no reason for anybody to be separated.”

Two final notes. One: the videoscreen directly above the podium is the largest I’ve ever seen at a convention. The technicians were testing it, and the images struck me as looking like something out of1984. Two: it’s been raining off and on today, with some really heavy rain coming down for 10 or 15 minutes at a time. weather.com puts the chance of rain on Thursday, when Barack Obama is scheduled to give his acceptance speech in an open stadium, at 40%. The fallback venue—which I’m guessing the Democrats are extremely likely to choose—is the Time-Warner Center. Both parties took a real chance on the weather this year. Republicans scheduled their convention within a few miles of the Gulf of Mexico in hurricane season, and had to call the first day off. Democrats scheduled a stadium speech in the South where it rains a lot.

Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz has been caught. ...

Specifically, neither the new history and issues sections of the Obama-controlled, Wasserman-Schultz-run DNC website, not to mention the video, ever whispers a hint that the Democrats:

· Supported slavery in 6 platforms from 1840-1860.
· Opposed the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution that successively wiped out slavery and gave both legal rights and voting rights to black Americans.
· Supported segregation actively or by silence in 20 platforms from 1868-1948.
· Opposed anti-lynching laws, specifically supported by the GOP in four platforms between 1912 and 1928.
· Opposed the GOP-sponsored Civil Rights Acts of 1866, which focused on legal equality for blacks.
· Opposed the GOP on giving voting rights to blacks in the District of Columbia in 1867. The legislation was passed over the Democrats' objection..
· Nominated an 1868 presidential ticket of New York Governor Horatio Seymour and ex-Missouri Congressman Francis Blair. The Democrats pledged they would declare the Civil Rights laws passed by the GOP "null and void" and would refuse to enforce them. They lost to Ulysses Grant.
· Opposed the Enforcement Acts, three laws passed by the GOP between 1870 and 1871 targeting the rise of the Ku Klux Klan and making it a federal crime to block the right of blacks to vote, hold office, serve on juries and have equal protection of the laws with whites.
· Opposed the GOP Civil Rights Act of 1875, which prohibited discrimination of blacks in public accommodations.
· Used the Ku Klux Klan as what Columbia University historian Eric Foner calls "a military force serving the interests of the Democratic Party." Nor is there reference to University of North Carolina historian Allen Trelease's description of the Klan as the "terrorist arm of the Democratic Party." Nor is there mention of the infamous 1924 Democratic Convention -- the "Klanbake" as it is known to history because hundreds of the delegates were Klan members. The Klan-written platform mixed the traditional Democratic message of progressivism and racism in the Klan-written platform.
· Repealed the Civil Rights laws enacted by GOP Congresses and presidents, already damaged by the Supreme Court. When Democrats gained control of both Congress and the White House in 1892, the Democrats' President Grover Cleveland signed the repeal on February 8, 1894.

None of this stark, vicious and frequently violent racial history, much of it detailed in Bruce Bartlett's Wrong on Race: The Democratic Party's Buried Past, is mentioned on the new website.

There is no polite way to put it. This DNC website presentation is a lie.

VERONA — Earl Jones had just turned off his new TV shortly after 2 a.m. Monday when he heard a bang in the basement.
The 92-year-old Boone County farmer walked eight paces to get his loaded .22 caliber rifle from behind the bedroom door. He unwrapped a beige cloth and returned to the living room, sitting in a chair with clear view – and shot – of the basement door, waiting with the gun across his lap.
Some 15 minutes later, when he heard footsteps moving closer up the stairs, he raised the rifle to his eye. The intruder kicked open the door. Jones fixed his aim on the center of the man’s chest and fired a single shot.

The break-in was the third Jones has experienced on his farm this year. In April, thieves stole 90 head of cattle from the field behind his house. In August, burglars took from his house a television, a few thousands dollars cash and a personal check they unsuccessfully tried to cash and ripped his phone out of the wall.

“I can’t leave the damn house to do my work outside,” said Jones, removing his World War II veteran cap with his right hand and running his left through his thin white hair.

Jones has lived alone since his wife, Virginia Pearl, died in 2006. The couple had no children. Jones grew up hunting squirrels in Boone County and volunteered for the forerunner to the U.S. Air Force in 1941. He went through weapons training in the military.

He is not happy that police took the rifle used in the shooting.

“How am I going to protect myself if they come back looking for revenge?” he said. ...

One of the best segments of this show was a not too subtle object lesson in how liberal and Socialist governments (like Obama's) conspire to narrow the gap between me rich and poor. While in 1ndia, while on their road trip in older used English made cars, a joke was played. One of the cars was an old Rolls-Royce with a working air conditioner. The air conditioners in the other cars didn't work. Air and most other conditions in India being miserable, a minor change was made to level the atmosphere.
Clarkeson and Company noted that there was a wide gap between the affluent and destitute in India. Liberal government's solution to this disparity is the same solution to their air conditioner disparity. Seize from the well off to make everyone the same and miserable!

Jeremy Clarkson has landed the BBC in hot water again after viewers of the Top Gear Christmas special complained that his jokes about India's people and culture were offensive.

The frequently controversial presenter – who recently generated thousands of complaints over a quip on the BBC One Show that striking public sector workers should be "executed in front of their families" – made a string of jokes about the Indian food, clothes, toilets, trains and even the country's history.

Incidents during the show, which aired on Wednesday night andattracted an audience of 5 million, included Clarkson driving a Jaguar around an Indian slum with a toilet fitted in the boot. "This is perfect for India because everyone who comes here gets the trots," he quipped.

Another gag involved putting banners with seemingly innocuous slogans – such as Eat English Muffins – on the side of trains. However, the banners were strategically placed so that when the trains carriages split a new, offensive, phrase emerged: "Eat English Muff." ...

...The train banner stunt, which included one slogan that transformed into the word "Shit For Your Company", aired before 9pm when offensive language and content is prohibited from being broadcast....

The BBC has so far received 23 complaints that the string of crude jokes and gags were "offensive to India and Indian culture". There were also some complaints against the show by some users on Twitter, with a small number of users of the micro-blogging service accusing the show of "casual racism". and "racist stereotyping". ..

Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley of Maryland, who is considered a possible contender for president in 2016, bucked other Obama surrogates on Sunday, saying that the country was not better off now than it was four years ago.

On CBS's Face the Nation, host Bob Schieffer asked: “Can you honestly say that people are better off today than they were four years ago?”

Responded O’Malley: “No, but that's not the question of this election. The question, without a doubt, we are not as well off as we were before George Bush brought us the Bush job losses, the Bush recession, the Bush deficits, the series of desert wars -- charged for the first time to credit cards, the national credit card.”

Quipped Schieffer: “George Bush is not on the ballots.”

With their national convention starting this week, Democrats took to morning television on Monday to better answer a question that many struggled with on Sunday's talk shows: is the country better off four years after President Obama took office.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said the country was moving in the right direction by pointing to job growth and the auto industry. ...“By any measure the country has moved forward over the last four years,” she said on NBC's Today. “It might not be as fast as people hoped....

Cutter then placed blame on Congressional Republicans for not moving on Democratic jobs proposals, saying the GOP has not cooperated with Democrats to promote economic growth. She also said the situation left by President George W. Bush was a grave one.

This attack was echoed by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the Democratic National Convention chairman.

“If you look at how we got here, how we got to this deficit—we got into two wars that we didn't pay for … the Bush tax cuts took us here in great part,” he said on CBS’s This Morning. “So the answer is yes, we are better off. But we've got to keep on working harder.”

When pushed on how those who are unemployed are better off, Villaraigosa remained firm in his answer. “When you're unemployed, you're struggling and of course, if you recently unemployed, you're not better off,” he continued. “But the fact of the matter is, as a nation, we are better off.”

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, who in part caused this latest media storm with his comments on Sunday (when asked if the country was better off, he replied, "No, but that's not the question of this election"), did an about-face on Monday and said the country is in fact doing better.

“We are clearly better of as a country because we’re now creating jobs rather than losing them,” O’Malley, a Democrat, said on CNN’s Starting Point. “But we have not recovered all that we lost in the Bush recession. That’s why we need to continue to move forward.”

“They're going to blame Bush, but the problem is that when presidents run for reelection, they have to account for their record and the future,” Priebus said on Fox & Friends. “The question that Americans will be asking themselves: ‘Is this next four years going to be different than the last four?’ So far the president hasn't been able to answer the question.”

On Monday, in a video asking “Are you better off?”
