 Patient costs are up. Access to doctors is down. Co-ops are going bankrupt, and insurance companies have already asked Uncle Sam for a taxpayer-funded bailout. 

 Five years have passed since former speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) infamously admitted, “We have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it.” Americans now know what was hiding in Obamacare. And they don’t like it. 

 That’s why it is more important than ever for Republicans in Congress to honor the promises we have made to the American people and finally send an Obamacare-repeal bill to the president’s desk. We can do this, before the end of the year, through a procedure known as “budget reconciliation.”

 Normally it takes 60 votes to move legislation in the Senate. But a reconciliation bill is considered “privileged,” so it can pass the Senate by a simple majority vote as long as it contains “policies affecting mainly permanent spending and revenue programs.”

Congressional Democrats used this very mechanism to force Obamacare through Congress on a party-line vote, ...

If you are a prosecutor in Nassau County and enjoy your Second Amendment rights, you might want to consider looking for another job.

The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office on New York’s Long Island bars its prosecutors
from possessing a handgun, even at home, unless a special exception is
made by the Acting District Attorney, Madeline Singas, according to an
application for employment.

We aren’t talking about concealing and carrying a firearm, we are
talking about merely owning a firearm. And this prohibition is coming
from a government office!

“[A]ssistant district attorneys are not permitted to apply for a
handgun permit nor own or possess a handgun while employed by the Nassau
County District Attorney. Any exception to this policy must be in
writing and approved by the District Attorney,” the application states.

I hope I’m not the only once concerned about the Nassau County District Attorney Office’s grasp of constitutional principles.

Eugene Volokh, professor at UCLA School of Law, says this is a violation of the prosecutors’ rights.

“Prosecutors often have special reasons they may want to be able to defend themselves,” Volokh told FoxNews.com.

“I’m not arguing they should have extra rights beyond what everyone
else has; I’m arguing they should have the same rights,” Volokh said. ...

Who is really a "false prophet"?

Three years ago, in November of 2012, it was suggested here in this space that Speaker John Boehner be replaced. (Note: The article was re-run as a Flasback yesterday.) The suggestion was to replace him with an “outsider” as the Speaker of the House does not have to be a sitting member of the House. The outsider suggested was WisconsinGovernor Scott Walker. The main point, however, was well beyond Speaker Boehner. The point, to quote again, was that too many Republicans are
Fords (as in Gerald, a Boehner predecessor as House GOP Leader) and not Reagans.

Over the weekend, the Speaker took to the airwaves of CBS and decried what he called “false prophets” in the GOP, including, presumably, his own caucus. He alluded to his recent speech in which he called Senator Ted Cruz a “jackass.” CNN reported his Face the Nation interview this way (bold print for emphasis supplied):

Washington (CNN) John Boehner lashed out at
"false prophets" in the right's ranks, blaming them for political
strategies that "never had a chance" even while taking the government
into fiscal crises.

"Absolutely, they're not realistic," the retiring House speaker said of hard-line conservatives and outside groups in a Sunday interview on CBS' "Face the Nation."

He pointed to the October 2013 shutdown after
conservative House Republicans demanded the repeal of President Barack
Obama's signature health care law as one maneuver — led by Texas Sen.
Ted Cruz — that was never going to succeed.

"The Bible says beware of false prophets. And there are
people out there, you know, spreading noise about how much can get done.
I mean this whole notion that we're going to shut down the government
to get rid of Obamacare in 2013 -- this plan never had a chance," Boehner said.

"But over the course of the August recess in 2013 and in September, a
lot of my Republican colleagues who knew this was a fool's errand --
really, they were getting all this pressure from home to do this," he

It is Barack Obama who has led the way for three years in doing absolutely nothing about Assad’s terror. 

Obama spoke harshly of Syria’s Bashar al-Assad, “who drops barrel bombs on innocent children” and uses chemical weapons, and he called for “a managed transition away from Assad.” But it is Barack Obama who has led the way for three years in doing absolutely nothing about Assad’s terror. When in 2012 even Hillary Clinton advised that the United States had to do more, Obama rejected that advice and stood firmly for inaction. On Libya, he said: “Even as we helped the Libyan people bring an end to the reign of a tyrant, our coalition could have and should have done more to fill a vacuum left behind.” But why did the coalition not do more? Because Barack Obama rushed for the exits, not because “our coalition” got it wrong. ...

Hillary Clinton’s problem is that the camera doesn’t lie.

Hillary Clinton knows she’ll never be elected president if she can’t figure out a way to win your affection. The problem is, even with a quarter-century of “public service” under her belt, Hillary can’t seem to connect with the average American. Now, with Vice President Joe Biden making noises about jumping into the race for the Democratic nomination, the likeability issue has taken on added urgency for the Clinton campaign. For all his faults as a candidate, Biden is a pretty likeable guy. Hillary’s team knows what the likeability issue could do to her in a primary fight, which is probably why they were hoping to lock things up early.

In a new book, Unlikeable: The Problem with Hillary, journalist and longtime Clinton family antagonist Edward Klein claims that Bill Clinton once pushed his wife to engage filmmaker Steven Spielberg to help make her more appealing. If true, Spielberg was an odd choice for acting coach. His films are known primarily for their sweeping cinematic qualities and sharp storytelling, not necessarily for the top-shelf performances he coaxes out of his actors. In an excerpt from his book in the New York Post, Klein reports that Hillary reluctantly agreed to the sessions. “I get
$250,000 to give a speech . . . and these Hollywood jackasses are going to tell me how to do it!” she reportedly said.

If Klein’s information is correct, and if the quote is accurate, the Clintons are more confused about how to improve Hillary’s public image than anyone knew. For one thing, they’ve made the fundamental mistake of confusing the demands of performing before a live audience with the art
of performing for the camera. Giving paid speeches is more like doing the work of a stage actor. Working on camera is a different discipline. No novice performer would ever confuse the two. That Bill and Hillary, this late in their political careers, would fail to recognize the difference is surprising.

All politics is performance, but presidential politics is performance art. ...

When Pope John Paul II visited Philadelphia in 1979, Mayor Frank Rizzo
did everything he could to ensure that everyone in the city and suburbs
had an opportunity to see the Holy Father. (I served as Rizzo's press
secretary.) But it appears that Mayor Nutter feels compelled to make
Center City a fenced-in fortress for Pope Francis' visit ("Nutter
outlines papal security," Friday).

The pope recently traveled
through several South American countries, visiting slums and high-crime
areas without incident. He is truly a pope for all the people. It's sad
to think that many in our area won't have a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to see him.

A congressman stole the water glass Pope Francis was drinking out of during his address at the White House on Thursday.

Representative Bob Brady, a devout Catholic and Democrat from Pennsylvania immediately made his way to the podium after Pope Francis finished speaking and grabbed the glass that was still filled with water.

He then drank the water, gave some of the water to his wife Debra, and saved the rest for his grandchildren. 

Representative Brady took photos as well, and had his staff send them out to the press.

The election of a Republican House in 2010 put an end to the march of liberal legislation through Congress. Obama would get no signing ceremony for carbon caps, for pro-union laws, for new gun controls, or even, as it turned out, for the “comprehensive immigration reform” so favored by all the great and good. Republicans in Congress also imposed some spending cuts, albeit ones that fell too heavily on defense. When George W. Bush’s tax cuts expired, they got President Obama to agree to put many of them into law indefinitely.

Those are real accomplishments for which Speaker John Boehner, who has just announced that he will retire at the end of October, deserves some credit. While he seems to have favored something like the misbegotten immigration bill that the Senate passed in 2013, for example, he wisely chose to avoid letting it go through over his party’s objections. But overall his record is one that conservatives find, and should find, disappointing. To be sure, there are real limits, as Boehner and his allies always insisted, on what Republican congressmen can achieve when an implacably liberal president has a unified Democratic party behind him; but what is most dismaying is how little Republican congressmen have even tried to achieve. The House has never voted on a conservative replacement for Obamacare, or a tax reform, or even a bill to unwind Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. One of the few conservative policy victories in the last few years — the end, for now, of federal authorization of the Export-Import Bank — was accomplished over Boehner’s objections.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign to make a presidential silk purse out of a political sow’s ear has finally transitioned into embarrassing absurdity. Her consultants’ oxymoronic advice that she “be spontaneous” and show more “humor” and “empathy,” and her uncontrolled giggling while being interviewed on CNN have taken us to the point where sober and judicious analysis is no longer adequate. Only Hollywood can provide us with useful psychological insights. Here follows Hillary analyzed through three film classics.

The Narcissism of an Aging Star Deservedly Forgotten: Sunset Boulevard (1950)

Gloria Swanson plays the has-been silent movie star Norma Desmond, who manipulates broke screenwriter Joe Gillis, played by William Holden, in order to resurrect her long- moribund career. Desmond’s creepy attempts to turn back time to her glory days as a star––vamping around her Hollywood gothic mansion in clownish makeup as she seduces Gillis–– bespeak a surreal obsession with her own passé greatness, one fueled by her refusal to admit that she has no talent for acting in the talkies. She expresses her delusional narcissism in one of the greatest lines ever written for the movies. When Holden comments, “You used to be big,” Desmond answers, “I am big, it’s the pictures that got small.” Desmond stays in her fantasy world to the end, speaking the immortal lines “All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up” as she descends her grand staircase on her way to the insane asylum.

Hillary Clinton is the political Norma Desmond. She was “big” in the 90s, when she was touted as co-President to her satyr husband and cooked up Hillarycare as proof of her gravitas. She played the role of the feminist First Lady to perfection, and then ruined the performance by swallowing her feminist pride to “stand by her man” when his sordid serial adultery came to light and humiliated her before the world. After that she played an Acela corridor celebrity rather than being a politician of achievement, winning a gimme Senate seat in New York, then parking herself as Secretary of State so she could at least stay in the news.

But she never “starred” in either of those roles.  ...

But that hasn't stopped the Mercer Island School District from banning the harmless game without even consulting parents.

The school district's communications director Macy Grade, in an email, told Q13 that the "rationale behind this [ban] is to ensure the physical and emotional safety of all students.

Emotional safety? Are kids such wimps that they become traumatized while chased in a game they volunteer to play? Or is that the hyper-sensitive, hyper-protective school district feels the need to protect students from made up dangers to justify their paychecks? ...

For example, the Clinton's, Carter's nor, ironically, the Obama's daughters didn't go to local schools heavily populated with minorities. I know, I know, President's offspring need special security and attention, but they don't have to go to a private, exclusive Quaker School. The D.C. school district could make for an exemplary and safe-secure charter school as should be the entire district since it wastes nearly twice as much as any other public school, per pupil, in the County (a few exceptions noted in similar 'minority-majority' cities).

Left wing Boston fought School Busing hammer and tong for years, violently at times.

Barbara Boxer moved out of lefty New York to a then, moderately conservative California, to really screw it up with her same socialist politics she moved away from, etc... m/r

Progressive parents fight integration in their children’s public schools. I live in a small slice of Brooklyn wedged between Brooklyn Heights, one of New York’s most prosperous neighborhoods, Dumbo, a relatively new neighborhood that is essentially a forest of condominiums catering to financiers, techies, and “creative professionals,” and Farragut Houses, a sprawling public-housing complex that borders the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Though you won’t find gated communities in this part of Brooklyn, you will find buildings with doormen, which is of course a quite similar phenomenon. The retail establishments catering to affluent professionals don’t formally exclude poor residents, but their high prices do the work of explaining who is welcome and who is not. Very rich people and very poor people live side by side in this part of Brooklyn, yet their lives rarely intersect. Rich Brooklynites and poor Brooklynites do, however, share their local public schools. And as you can imagine, not all of Brooklyn’s bourgeois parents are thrilled about this fact.

Kate Taylor of the New York Times has written a fascinating report on a school rezoning in my part of town. Basically, Public School 8 in Brooklyn Heights is massively oversubscribed while Public School 307 in Vinegar Hill, right by the Farragut Houses, is undersubscribed. The city has thus proposed shifting Dumbo families from P.S. 8 to P.S. 307, which seems sensible enough. So why are parents in Dumbo so outraged? Taylor explains:

 P.S. 307’s population is 90 percent black and Hispanic, and 90 percent of the students’ families receive some form of public assistance. Its state test scores, while below the citywide averages, are closer to average for black and Hispanic students, with 20 percent of its students passing the math tests and 12 percent passing the reading tests this past year. At P.S. 8, whose population is 59 percent white, with only 15 percent receiving assistance, scores are considerably above the city averages. Almost two-thirds of its students passed each test.

Saudi Arabia's safety record for religious pilgrimages was under scrutiny on Thursday after 717 people died in the worst disaster to strike the annual hajj pilgrimage in Mecca in 25 years.

At least 863 others were injured in the crush at Mina, a few miles east of Mecca, caused by two large groups of pilgrims arriving together at a crossroads on their way to performing the "stoning the devil" ritual at Jamarat, Saudi civil defence said. ...

...  The tragedy was the worst to befall the pilgrimage since July 1990, when 1,426 pilgrims were perished in an overcrowded pedestrian tunnel leading to holy sites near Mecca and the ninth in a string of such incidents since then.

Both stampedes occurred on Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice), Islam's most important feast and the day of the stoning ritual. Over the last 25 years, such incidents have claimed the lives of more than 3,000 pilgrims.  ...

“The fallacy that President Obama is a Muslim has tripped up many a politician,” said NPR’s Jessica Taylor hopefully on Friday, “and on Thursday night, GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump was its latest victim.”

Trump’s presumed faux pas was his failure to correct a questioner who asserted that Barack Obama was a Muslim. Taylor’s real error as a reporter, like that of all her mainstream colleagues, was to dismiss the questioner’s assertion as a “fallacy” without providing any evidence to the contrary.

Strange but true, reporters pride themselves on knowing nothing about Obama’s roots. Last month, for instance, Catherine Thompson of the popular progressive blog, Talking Points Memo, interviewed me about an article I had written on the subject of Republican presidential eligibility.

Weary of her obvious condescension, I asked her where Obama spent the first year of his life. “Indonesia?” she answered. “No,” I said, “Seattle.” I asked her to survey her colleagues on the same question. Not surprisingly, this was the one exchange she edited out of the interview.

On Tuesday night I checked in with Sean Hannity on Fox News to ponder the latest strange turn of this political season - the question of whether a Muslim should be America's president.

As the celebrate-diversity types like to drone, the US Constitution does not impose a religious test. Which is true. But the Constitution does impose a constitution test - and that would pose a serious difficulty for an honest, observant Muslim. Which is why, as I pointed out to Sean, around the world, when traditional Common Law protections rub up against Sharia, it's Common Law that bites the dust. As President Erdogan famously put it, democracy is a train you ride until you get to the stop you want - and so it has proved.

On the Is-Obama-a-Muslim? front, Sean noted that this line was not so subtly promoted by Hillary in 2008 - although Obama has certainly done his best to live up to it, championing Sharia over the First Amendment by declaring to the United Nations in 2012 that "the future shall not belong to those who slander the Prophet of Islam".

The FBI's bizarre and shocking refusal earlier this week to cooperate with legal efforts to force the public release of emails from former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's hacker-friendly private Internet server is yet more proof that the Obama administration is continuing to provide political cover for the 2016 presidential hopeful.

This strange behavior comes as Republican lawmakers escalate their criticism of Mrs. Clinton's unusual emailing habits. Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) is demanding that U.S. Attorney General and Obama lackey Loretta Lynch appoint a special counsel to investigate the case. Other lawmakers want hearings to consider compelling testimony from Bryan Pagliano, a former Clinton staffer who installed the server in her private residence.

The Department of State is also dragging its heels in processing the electronic correspondence, Citizens United President David Bossie said. The agency is "slow walking" the Freedom of Information Act requests for the almost-certainly damning emails to prevent their release before key Democratic primary elections next year, he said.

The server is at the heart of the growing scandal over Clinton's mishandling of an Islamic terrorist attack in militant-infested Benghazi, Libya on the 11th anniversary of 9/11 that left four Americans, including U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens, dead. Even now, three years after the assault, the Obama administration has failed to provide an autopsy report about Stevens who was initially reported to have been ritualistically sodomized before being murdered by Muslim terrorists.

In the last GOP debate, most of the candidates showed a sociopathic indifference to the threat that immigration presents to the GOP’s (and America’s) future—even though the event was held in a state that Republicans have practically written off.
And there is increasing evidence that forces within the GOP see the
2016 election, not as an opportunity to retake the White House, but as
an excuse to conduct another Politically Correct purge within the
American Right.

Coulter herself is the first one on the hit list. In response to the question of what AMERICA
(!!!) will look like after they were President, candidates such as Ted
Cruz, Mike Huckabee, and Marco Rubio rhapsodized about Israel. As part
of Coulter’s running twitter commentary, she mocked the GOP’s obvious
pandering with tweets that the usual suspects called
“anti-Semitic”—despite Coulter’s very public record of support for the Jewish state.

Lost in the controversy: the simple truth that Coulter’s commentary
was a criticism of Republican pandering—not of the principle of support
for Israel or of the voting patterns of Jews. Coulter had spent the entire evening bashing the GOP for recycling decades-old talking points, including creepy invocations of Ronald Reagan and ludicrous plans to re-invade the Middle East.

They would devastate the poor on whose behalf he purports to speak — if his policy prescriptions were not as implausible as his social diagnoses are shrill. 

 Supporters of Francis have bought newspaper and broadcast advertisements to disseminate some of his woolly sentiments that have the intellectual tone of fortune cookies. One example: “People occasionally forgive, but nature never does.” The Vatican’s majesty does not disguise the vacuity of this. Is Francis intimating that environmental damage is irreversible? He neglects what technology has accomplished regarding London’s air (see Page 1 of Dickens’s Bleak House) and other matters. 

And the Earth is becoming “an immense pile of filth”? Hyperbole is a predictable precursor of yet another U.N. climate-change conference — the 21st since 1995. Fortunately, rhetorical exhibitionism increases as its effectiveness diminishes. In his June encyclical and elsewhere, Francis lectures about our responsibilities, but neglects the duty to be as intelligent as one can be. This man who says “the Church does not presume to settle scientific questions” proceeds as though everything about which he declaims is settled, from imperiled plankton to air conditioning being among humanity’s “harmful habits.” The church that thought it was settled science that Galileo was heretical should be attentive to all evidence.

Calling Obama a Muslim is about the only thing that isn't derogatory that can be said

Obama's middle name, Hussein, is Muslim; he, himself listed his religion as Muslim when he was in school in Indonesia. His father was a Muslim Communist. His stepfather was a Muslim. Obama never calls the Bible Holy, he ALWAYS calls the Koran, the "Holy Koran." He insists that ISIS is "ISIL" and it's not "Islamic' and there are no Islamic Terrorists in his lexicon.

The Dumb-ass Media think all Republicans are to act even Dumber-assed like John McCain. It's not up to Trump or anyone else to defend Obama. “This is the first time in my life that I have caused controversy by

News of the meeting comes after a Southern police chief was given the boot for posting a note critical of Black Lives Matter and of President Obama's incessant race-baiting.

Black Lives Matter is animated not only by anti-white racism but by a hatred of normal American values, including law and order. Its members denounce the U.S. for imagined institutional racism and discrimination against African-Americans. Members idolize convicted, unrepentant cop-killers Assata Shakur and Mumia Abu Jamal, both of whom are black, and have declared "war" on law enforcement. Its members openly call for police officers to be assassinated.
