JUNE 4, 1942: The pivotal Battle of Midway begins as Japanese carrier-based planes attack the remote Pacific island. Four waves of American planes launched from three remaining carriers fail to repel the Japanese fleet, but a fifth wave of dive bombers catches them off guard with aircraft on the deck, and sink three (four in total) of their carriers.
