Nanny of the Month (August 2012): Stimulus Money Used to Support Soda Taxes

She is certifiably out of her gourd and in all our personal business!

Nanny of the Month (August 2012): Stimulus Money Used to Support Soda Taxes - YouTube

Yet neither could managed to muster the the meddling of this month's top pick. Using federal taxpayers' dough (we're talking stimulus and Obamacare cash) to implement local-level soda taxes and other nanny state laws certainly violates good taste, but the Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General thinks it might also violate federal anti-lobbying provisions.

Media's 'Fact Check' Smokescreen - Media 'Fact Checkers' Always Seem To Favor Obama

Just that the Obama 'facts' as he wants them are not the truth!

Media 'Fact Checkers' Always Seem To Favor Obama - Investors.com

Journalism: If media "fact checkers" are just impartial guardians of the truth, how come they got their own facts wrong about Paul Ryan's speech, and did so in a way that helped President Obama's re-election effort?
Case in point was the rush of "fact check" stories claiming Ryan misled when he talked about a shuttered auto plant in his home state.
Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler posted a piece — "Ryan misleads on GM plant closing in hometown" — saying Ryan "appeared to suggest" that Obama was responsible for the closure of a GM plant in Janesville, Wis.
"That's not true," Kessler said. "The plant was closed in December 2008, before Obama was sworn in."
What's not true are Kessler's "facts." Ryan didn't suggest Obama was responsible for shuttering the plant. Instead, he correctly noted that Obama promised during the campaign that the troubled plant "will be here for another hundred years" if his policies were enacted.
Also, the plant didn't close in December 2008. It was still producing cars until April 2009.
An AP "fact check" also claimed that "the plant halted production in December 2008" even though the AP itself reported in April 2009 that the plant was only then "closing for good."
CNN's John King made the same claim about that plant closure. But when CNN looked more carefully at the evidence, it — to its credit — concluded that what Ryan said was "true."

The Commentator - The climate change racket: Finally a 'day in court'?

Is the day that non-alarmists have long awaited finally upon us? The climate change racket on trial in a court of law?
Peter C. Glover on 29 August 2012

It’s what we non-alarmists have long wanted: the climate change racket on trial in a court of law. In threatening National Review and its international columnist Mark Steyn with legal action over alleged “defamatory remarks” in his ‘Corner’ column, inventor of the famously debunked “hockey stick” climate graph, Dr Michael Mann, may have finally bitten off way more than he can legally chew.
The current ruckus started when columnist Steyn penned a short piece entitled Football and Hockey on July 25th. In it Steyn referenced Rand Simberg’s ‘Unhappy Valley’s Other Scandal’ article (July 13th) on the Competitive Enterprise Institute’s ‘Open Market’ blog site.
Simberg’s posting was based on former FBI director Louis Freeh’s recently published report setting out the “appalling behaviour” of the Penn State authorities who were found to be complicit in covering up Jerry Sandusky’s serial rape activities. Simberg made the point that the same “rotten and corrupt culture” at Penn State had, two years earlier, conducted an investigation that ultimately “whitewashed” another of their high profile “rock star” staffers, Dr Michael Mann, who was also “bringing in millions in research funding”.

The Videos of Dead-Pan Liars from NBC-ABC-CBS-CNN over 50 Years! Bozell Battles Media Elephant in the Room

The old "in the bag" men
The same script is replayed with a few fluid issues with lying statements about the national popularity of any issue to try to falsely discredit Republicans!
Bozell has kept track of the stunning lock on propaganda the press had and unfortunately still has control over. Race will be poured into this falsified mix even more now!

The American Spectator : Bozell Battles Media Elephant in the Room

Media Research Center' Truth project exposes liberal media bias in 2012 campaign.
It's the elephant in the room.
The elephant in the room as in the obvious truth that is being ignored. The "room" defined as the 2012 fall campaign.
That elephant in the room.
The elephant in the room with which Brent Bozell and the Media Research Center are doing daily, quite vivid battle -- and winning. As a matter of fact, anticipating that the Obama campaign would be little more than a slug fest of personal attacks rather than policy debates, Bozell announced a "Tell the Truth" campaign -- way back in January of this year. Long before there were Obama campaign commercials accusing Mitt Romney of killing a steelworker's wife or insisting Romney was a felon, the 25-year old MRC -- 25 this year -- had awebsite in place to keep Americans fully informed of just how the media bias game is being played on both videotape and audiotape as well as in print.
As with all elephants in a room, the obvious truth of the 2012 campaign is begging and trumpeting to be ignored. With reason. Like real elephants, this particular elephant in a room is big -- huge. It's also determined, motivated, ruthless, capable of sudden rage -- and it never forgets. It will trample on anyone and anything that gets in its way or is perceived in the slightest degree to pose a threat to the elephant's agenda. Most importantly it lived for a very long time with a unique ability to be both highly visible -- while being invisible at the same time.
The latter trait -- being visible but invisible at the same time -- is now lost as a direct result of Bozell's work. Added to the invention of Fox News, talk radio, and the Internet -- Bozell and his colleagues have made it absolutely impossible for the elephant to be invisible ever again.
So the elephant isn't happy. In fact, it's furious that its rampages are now reported instantly.
Take this snappy little video that the Media Research Center has put out showing the elephant doing its thing.
An amazing sight, no?
So how long has this elephant been hanging around, you ask?
This elephant that you see in that MRC video originally appeared in what is still known today as the first modern presidential campaign. The first campaign filled with television cameras, jet planes, computers and all the trappings that are now not only standard fare in 2012 but are refined in spectacular fashion.
That campaign: 1960.

Sacred Cows - Rand Paul speaks hard truths to GOP

Fat Chance, but getting rid of DEA and the war drugs, the ATF (what a redundant waste), the IRS, let the States regulate Abortion because it has always existed and will NEVER go away no matter what, let the States deal with homosexual unions and marriage (and polygamy will be next because of Muslins, not Mormons). Freeze all Federal hiring, the military is too political and too top heavy. Why are there over 100 admirals when there are 164 ships in the Navy? The defense budget nets correcting in better pay for the sailors, soldiers and marines and better benefits for veterans, these are the only real workers in the government.
Eliminate or consolidate the Dept. of Homeland Security, Education, EPA, Labor, HUD, Health and Human Services, Interior, Commerce, Transportation, Energy, and quit and close the UN.
That is a small start! m/r

Blog: Rand Paul speaks hard truths to GOP
August 30, 2012  Rick Moran

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul spoke to the GOP convention last night, telling both parties that they must "slay their sacred cows" in order for the nation to get its fiscal house in order.
USA Today:
Sen. Rand Paul urged GOP delegates tonight to embrace the Constitution and adopt the mantra of small government, as he urged them to elect Mitt Romney to the White House.
Paul is a Tea Party favorite and the son of the Texas congressman who was an adherent of the movement long before it had a name. For Tea Partiers, having one member of the Paul family on stage here onight might be small consolation.
The senator was applauded for his talk.
"Republicans and Democrats alike must slay their sacred cows," he said. "Republicans must acknowledge that not every dollar spent on the military is necessary or well-spent, and Democrats must admit that domestic welfare and entitlements must be reformed."

Breathing New Life into the Baroque

The Rule is, if you criticize Barack Obama it will be called racism even when you see his fly is down. The Left’s Hurricane of Hate

"If one embraces Matthews’ distorted worldview, every criticism aimed at Barack Obama constitutes racism."

The Left’s Hurricane of Hate | FrontPage Magazine

Arnold Ahlert On August 30, 2012
A hurricane coupled with a Republican convention is more than enough to elicit the latest spasms of hate emanating from the Left. Our list of oh-so-tolerant all-stars comes from the predictable precincts of Hollywood and the mainstream media. All of them seemingly embrace the Obama administration’s credo of never letting a crisis go to waste.
Former movie star Ellen Barkin apparently didn’t get the memo about toning down the violent rhetoric in the wake of the Gabby Giffords shooting. Last Sunday, Barkin re-tweeted a message from one of her followers that illuminated the rank hypocrisy of those who consider themselves paragons of tolerance. “C’mon #Isaac! Wash every pro-life, anti-education, anti-woman, xenophobic, gay-bashing, racist SOB right into the ocean! #RNC,” the message read. Barkin defended herself by lashing out at Twitchy, the website that reported the tweet. ”For better or worse, that was not my original tweet.A retweet. But Twitchy liked it better their way,” she wrote. Twitchy noted that a re-tweet is not necessarily an endorsement of the original message, but noted that ”Barkin didn’t give any indication that she disagreed with the revolting sentiment when she retweeted it to her followers.”
Barkin is no stranger to expressing such “open-mindedness.” Back in July, she expressed her displeasure regarding the idea that some Americans aren’t thrilled with her upcoming television show, “The New Normal.” The NBC series is about a gay couple who want to use a surrogate mother to have a baby. ”I love everybody,..except u right wing f**kin morons, (sic),” she tweeted at the time. Add her August take on voter ID, “bulls**t going on now will kill us all,” and her tweet to actor Jon Lovitz for criticizing the president, “John Lovitz maybe I met you a few times back in the day, but now you’re just an ignorant a**hole. Shut the f**k up,” and you have a woman oblivious to her own, foul-mouthed intolerance.
She is hardly alone. Samuel Jackson also took to Twitter to question the wisdom of God Himself, and his divine decision to spare the city of Tampa, FL, site of the Republican convention. “Unfair S**t: GOP spared by Issac ! NOLA probably F**ked Again! Not understanding God’s plan!” wrote Jackson. A deluge of responses apparently caused Jackson to issue two other tweets characterized as “an apology” by The National Post:  ”Daayum! Poked a Hornets nest, hunh? Apologies to God, Tampa, da GOP& Isaac(sp)! Who played the Race card?!” Jackson wrote, followed up by “Whoooo! A lotta sh**t stirred into a Bulls**t tweet! Politics & Religion get MUHFREPUBLICANS heated!” Such tweets are apparently as “apologetic” as Jackson gets.
As for Jackson’s inquiry about who played the race card, going right to the top of the list would be MSNBC’s Chris Matthews.

Time for the US to be non-aligned with the UN! Netanyahu slams 'disgrace' of Tehran summit

Netanyahu slams 'disgrace' of Tehran summit - Yahoo! News Canada
AFP 8-29-12 full short post

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday slammed the wide international participation at a Non-Aligned summit in Tehran as a "stain on humanity" following Iran's denial of Israel's right to exist.
"Today, over 120 countries are in Tehran, saluting a regime that not only denies the Holocaust but pledges to annihilate the Jewish state, brutalises its own people, colludes in the murder of thousands of innocent Syrians and leads millions in chanting 'Death to America, death to Israel'," he said.
"So many in the international community appear to have learned nothing. I think this is a disgrace and a stain on humanity," Netanyahu said in a statement.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon, in Tehran for the summit of the 120-member Non-Aligned Movement that opens on Thursday, told Iranian leaders on Wednesday that their anti-Israel comments were "offensive and inflammatory," a UN spokesman said.
Ban "strongly objected" to the remarks in talks with supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has called Israel a "cancerous tumor," and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has doubted its right to exist, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters from Tehran.
Ban travelled to the summit despite US and Israeli criticism of his attendance, along with 36 heads of state or government who Iran says have confirmed they will take part.

Facts I Have Uncovered About the Real Mitt Romney

How the Democrats Portray Mitt Romney
August 28, 2012 by Bernard Goldberg
...After nearly four years in office, most Americans are disappointed in President Obama.
Even if they like him personally, there’s no escaping the conclusion that they don’t have much confidence in his abilities.  He’ a nice guy, they seem to be saying, but he’s just not up to the job.
And yet, the race is neck and neck.  Shouldn’t Mitt Romney be up by at least 10 points? What’s going on?
I have spent the last few weeks engaged in tireless research — and I think I have found the answer.  Consider these facts.
Mitt Romney is a murderer.  It’s been well documented that he played a major role in the death of a woman who had cancer.
He’s a tax cheat who hasn’t paid a penny in federal income taxes for at least 10 years.
He’s a felon who committed perjury in forms submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
He’s a Mormon, which as everyone knows, means he wears magic underwear, hates black people, and has a gaggle of wives hidden in the 55 mansions he owns in all 57 states as well as in palaces in Switzerland, Morocco, and the Caymen Islands.
He has genetically-engineered hair which he bought on line for $8 billion dollars – the amount of money he makes in 3 and a half days.
He is known to be very white.
His name isn’t even Mitt.
And one of his wives, the one they call Ann whom he has allowed to pop up on TV every now and then, is an admitted equestrian.
No wonder the race is so tight.

The Paramilitarized Bureaucracies who joined the Order of the Death's Head

Uniformly mean and stupid. Put a uniform on seemingly normal people. Give them the power of control over other people and the power to inflict pain or kill, and the will inflict pain and, at least hypothetically, will kill.

The Paramilitarized Bureaucracies :: SteynOnline

I flew in to Montreal from an overseas trip the other day and was met by a lady from my office, who had kindly agreed to drive me back home to New Hampshire. At the airport she seemed a little rattled, and it emerged that on her journey from the Granite State she had encountered a "security check" on the Vermont–Quebec border. U.S. officials had decided to impose temporary exit controls on I-91 and had backed up northbound traffic so that agents could ascertain from each driver whether he or she was carrying "monetary instruments" in excess of $10,000. My assistant was quizzed by an agent dressed in the full Robocop and carrying an automatic weapon, while another with a sniffer dog examined the vehicle. Which seems an unlikely method of finding travelers' checks for $12,000.
Being a legal immigrant, I am inured to the indignities imposed by the U.S. government. (You can't ask an illegal immigrant for ID, even at the voting booth or after commission of a crime, but a legal immigrant has to have his green card on him even when he's strolling in the woods behind his house.) And indeed, for anyone familiar with the curious priorities of officialdom, there is a certain logic in an agency that has failed to prevent millions of illegal aliens from entering the country evolving smoothly into an agency that obstructs law-abiding persons from exiting the country.
But my assistant felt differently. A couple of days later, I was zipping through a DVD of The Great Escape, trying to locate a moment from that terrific wartime caper that I wished to refer to in a movie essay. While zapping back and forth, I chanced on a scene after the eponymous escape in which Richard Attenborough and Gordon Jackson are trying to board a small-town bus while Gestapo agents demand "Your papers, mein herr." My assistant walked in in the middle, and we exchanged some mordant cracks about life under the Nazis. "It's almost as bad as driving from Lyndonville to Lac Brome for lunch." Etc. Her family have lived blameless and respectable lives in my North Country town for a quarter-millennium, and she didn't like the idea of having to clear an armed checkpoint on a U.S. highway in order to leave the country.
But, if you don't care for the Third Reich comparisons, consider more recent European ones: The capital flight from Greece, Spain, Italy, and elsewhere as the euro zone approaches breaking point.

Chinese media slams Romney as convention begins | The Cable

By Josh Rogin

TAMPA - China's state-controlled media lashed out at GOP presidential candidate Mitt RomneyMonday, warning that his policies would poison U.S.-China relations.
"By any standard, the U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's China policy, as outlined on his official campaign website, is an outdated manifestation of a Cold War mentality," read a commentary in Monday's China Daily. "It endorses the ‘China threat' theory and focuses on containing China's rise in the Asia-Pacific through bolstering the robust U.S. military presence in the region."
The Chinese state-owned outlet said that Romney was "provoking" China by promising to supply Taiwan with aircraft and other military platforms and called his China approach "pugnacious."
"[H]is China policy, if implemented, would cause a retrogression in bilateral ties and turn the region into a venue for open confrontation between China and the U.S.," the commentary stated.
China Daily also compared Romney'sapproach with President Barack Obama's "pivot" toward Asia.

GM suspending Chevy Volt output, retooling for Impala
Aug 27, 2012
By James R. Healey, USA TODAY
General Motors is halting, for a month, the manufacture of its well-known Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric car.
Automotive News, citing unnamed sources, reports the Detroit-Hamtramck plant will suspend production from Sept. 17 until Oct. 15.
Leaders of the UAW told the plant's 1,500 union workers about the scheduled downtime last week, the source said.
It would be the second interruption in production for the Volt, which can go 38 miles on battery power before needing a recharge from its gasoline engine. GM late Monday disputed published reports that the move is because of slow Volt sales. GM sold 10,666 Volts through July, way up from the 2,870 sold during the same period a year earlier.
"We are not idling the plant due to poor Volt sales.

"The Heart of Darkness" - White Genocide in South Africa

Degradation and decline has been the result of every corrupt and incompetent revolutionary Africa governments under their Marxist ANC leaders. This fact has been systematically covered up by our major media outlets. It is a familiar pattern with inconvenient truths.
It reinforces the original theme set down by Joseph Conrad (and now inverted by 'politcally correct,' deliberate misinterpretations) in his novella, "The Heart of Darkness." m/r

White Genocide in South Africa | FrontPage Magazine

By Daniel Greenfield On August 28, 2012
President Zuma of South Africa began the celebrations of the African National Congress’s 100-year anniversary with the ritual sacrifice of a bull.  While drums beat and singers in animal skins ululated, the animal died, its blood spilled out on the ground and the celebrations began.
Once the party was underway, Zuma sang “Dubula iBhunu,” an ANC song which means, “Kill the Farmer.” A court had ruled that “Dubula iBhunu” constituted hate speech, but President Zuma, who had survived a rape trial and 783 counts of corruption, was not worried about the law. The upper echelons of the ANC were above the law and adept at spilling blood, whether it was the blood of bulls, black rivals or white farmers.
During Zuma’s rape trial, ANC activists had chanted, “Burn the Bitch.” At the ANC’s centenary, Zuma sang, “Kill the Farmer.” Burning and killing have been the ANC’s traditional solutions to dealing with its enemies, and its long string of atrocities had kept it on the terror watch list in the United States until Obama took power and opened the door to the ANC’s butchers, along with the Muslim Brotherhood.
Zuma had joined the South African Communist Party in 1963 and his ANC regime still depends on its Tripartite Alliance with leftist unions and the Communist Party. Much as the left’s calls for an end to tyranny in Egypt paved the way for the tyranny of the Muslim Brotherhood, under the guise of fighting against racism, the left had succeeded in imposing a new racist regime on South Africa.
In Zimbabwe and Egypt, the left had rejected any possibility of a moderate solution leading to the present-day reign of terror. The only difference between Mugabe’s Zimbabwe and Zuma’s South Africa is that Mugabe has been in control of Zimbabwe for over 30 years, while the ANC has been running South Africa into the ground for less than two decades. Given another ten years of ANC rule, the likelihood is that South Africa will be in as bad a shape as Zimbabwe is now.
Like Mugabe, white farmers and business owners are Zuma’s enemies. There is a new Apartheid now in South Africa; it is an apartheid where the oppressor and the oppressed have switched places and the bloodshed is constant. The country’s white Boers have been disarmed, purged from the economy and systematically murdered.

Absolutely Corrupted! Feds: Too few Americans ‘turn to government for assistance’

Feds: Too few Americans ‘turn to government for assistance’ | WashingtonExaminer.com

Joel Gehrke    August 27, 2012  full short post

More Americans rely on their families for assistance than the government, so federal officials have undertaken an effort to help people to apply for federal assistance.
“Given that only 15 percent of you turn to government assistance in tough times, we want to make sure you know about benefits that could help you,” USA.gov announced today. The ”government made easy’ website has created a “help for difficult financial times” page for people to learn more about the programs.
The government got that statistic from a poll asking Americans what helps them the most during tough times. Here are the results:
  • Savings 44%
  • Family 21%
  • Credit cards/loans 20%
  • Government assistance 15%
“Government assistance comes in different forms—from unemployment checks and food assistance to credit counseling and medical treatment,” USA.gov reminded readers.
This leg of the financial assistance push has ended. “Although our campaign to highlight Help for Difficult Financial Times has ended, we know that your struggles may continue,” said USA.gov today. “We will keep updating the tools and information we provide to help you get back on your feet.”

Destroying Our Military from Within

The greatest force for the defense of the nation and for freedom in the world is being reduced by a Congress and a White House who refuse to recognize the threats that exist in a dangerous world

By Alan Caruba  Saturday, August 25, 2012
“Of the four wars in my lifetime, none came about because the U.S. was too strong.”— Ronald Reagan
If you want to know how President Obama feels about the U.S. military, consider that in all the years since D-Day 1945 there have been three occasions when a President failed to go to the D-Day Monument that honors the soldiers killed during the Invasion.
The occasions were:
1. Barack Obama 2010
2. Barack Obama 2011
3. Barack Obama 2012

For the past 68 years, all Presidents, except Obama, have paid tribute to the fallen soldiers killed on D-Day. This year, instead of honoring the soldiers, he made a campaign trip on Air Force 1 to California to raise funds for his reelection.
The U.S. military has been systematically weakened from within by a combination of idiotic and duplicitous decisions that suggest how far the nation has come from the fundamental understanding that an enemy must be destroyed with sufficient devastation as to never contemplate attacking us or our allies again.
World War Two was a success because both Germany and Japan were required to sign instruments of unconditional surrender. Both nations are now our allies.

Gritty N.J. city of Camden to scrap police department amid budget woes | Fox News

Published August 26, 2012

Crime-ridden Camden, New Jersey - often referred to as the most dangerous city in the United States—is getting rid of its police department.
In the latest example of a cash-strapped municipality taking drastic measures to deal with swollen public sector liabilities and shrinking budgets, the city plans to disband its 460-member police department and replace it with a non-union “Metro Division” of the Camden County Police. Backers of the plan say it will save millions of dollars for taxpayers while ensuring public safety, but police unions say it is simply a way to get out of collective bargaining with the men and women in blue.
“This is definitely a form of union-busting," Camden Fraternal Order of Police President John Williamson told FoxNews.com. “This method is unproven and untested, to put your faith in an agency that doesn’t even [yet] exist.”
Camden County Mayor Dana Redd has said layoffs of the city’s police force will begin by the end of the month.

But in 2010, Ermey slammed the president’s policies, saying his administration was attempting to “impose socialism” on the American people and, in the process, was “destroying the country,” TMZ reports.
Shortly afterward, he apologized for making the comments, but not before Geico decided to give him the boot. He told TMZ that he was fired over the incident, adding “if you’re conservative in this town, you better watch out.”

Isn't this a criminal offense there -Canada’s Racist Currency

Wasn't Mark Steyn charged and tried in Canada for this type of insensitivity?

Canada’s Racist Currency - By Jonah Goldberg - The Corner - National Review Online
8-27-12

Canada is racist for putting an Asian woman on its currency — and for taking her off.
The Bank of Canada simply wanted to give its citizens some snazzy new bills that would be more durable and harder to counterfeit. But when it came to the images that would grace the currency’s faces, it was not so simple. First, focus groups felt the draft art on the new $100 bill was racist because it featured an Asian woman looking into a microscope, which they felt reinforced the stereotype that Asians excel in science. Some believed other ethnicities should be represented. The bank eventually released the bill last year, replacing the figure with a Caucasian woman, only to be called out recently by Chinese groups for bending to racism and not representing minorities on currency.

In his final column for the Times, Brisbane wrote that his fellow staffers "share a kind of political and cultural progressivism" that "virtually bleeds through the fabric of The Times." Brisbane even argued that Times reporters approached some liberal issues, like gay marriage and the Occupy movement, "more like causes than news subjects."
But Times executive editor Jill Abramson says she disagrees with Brisbane's "sweeping conclusions."
"In our newsroom we are always conscious that the way we view an issue in New York is not necessarily the way it is viewed in the rest of the country or world. I disagree with Mr. Brisbane's sweeping conclusions," Abramson told POLITICO Saturday night.
"I agree with another past public editor, Dan Okrent, and my predecessor as executive editor, Bill Keller, that in covering some social and cultural issues, the Times sometimes reflects its urban and cosmopolitan base," she continued. "But I also often quote, including in talks with Mr. Brisbane, another executive editor, Abe Rosenthal, who wanted to be remembered for keeping 'the paper straight.' That's essential."
Brisbane declined to comment on the column, his last as he concludes a two-year tenure as the paper's in-house critic. "I would rather let the column speak for itself," he told POLITICO.

GOOD BYE COLUMBUS - Astronaut Neil Armstrong dies at 82

Astronaut Neil Armstrong dies at 82 | Fox News
August 25, 2012

Neil Armstrong was a quiet self-described nerdy engineer who became a global hero when as a steely-nerved pilot he made "one giant leap for mankind" with a small step on to the moon. The modest man who had people on Earth entranced and awed from almost a quarter million miles away has died. He was 82.
Armstrong died following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures, a statement Saturday from his family said. It didn't say where he died.
Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon July 20, 1969, capping the most daring of the 20th century's scientific expeditions. His first words after setting foot on the surface are etched in history books and the memories of those who heard them in a live broadcast.
"That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind," Armstrong said.
In those first few moments on the moon, during the climax of heated space race with the then-Soviet Union, Armstrong stopped in what he called "a tender moment" and left a patch commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in action.

Simple Enough, Because Mexicans hate Gringos!

MEXICO PROBES WHY FEDERAL COPS FIRED AT US GOV CAR
News from The Associated Press

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexican authorities are trying to sort out why a U.S. Embassy vehicle was shot up by federal police on a rural back road in mountains south of the capital, leaving two U.S. government workers wounded.
Officials from both nations said the federal officers were chasing criminals Friday morning when a hail of bullets was fired at the embassy sport utility vehicle, but the accounts left many questions unanswered.
The two American workers were taken to a hospital in the nearby resort city of Cuernavaca. One had a gunshot wound in his leg and the other was wounded in the stomach and a hand, said a Mexican government official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Hospital officials in Cuernavaca said the wounded were later transferred to a Mexico City hospital in stable condition.

Goin' Down and Havin' a good ol' time. Southerners and Gs

Bein' from Los Angeles, in Southern California, my family tended toward the flat mid-western, urban sound that was favored by radio and TV announcers and newsmen (but not 'puker' DJ's).
I was the one big exception to this.  As a young boy, I loved cowboys and imitated everything about them, including their lazy speech pattern. I was also raised in my most formative years by my Grandmother who came from the Inter-Mountain States. This also gave her that twangy Western way of speech. Much of my Western accent was suppressed when I was in school, but it just naturally came back as I began to travel for work, mostly in the Midwest, Southwest and the South. Elements of these regions easily blended into my accent and speech patterns. I still tended to front load my accents though. This applied to living in the Northeast later on, as subtle elements the regional phraseology crept into my language, but thankfully, little of the regional accents.
This was a long way of getting to the point. During the 2008 election, a Democrat friend of was asking me what I thought of Sarah Palin. I thought she was fine, I actually preferred her to McCain. My friend argued, "How can you like her, with the way she speaks and drops her G's at the end of words?"
"You mean the Western way I speak and drop my G's?" I replied. End of argument.
Regional dialects are funnier thing in America, even than they are in England. The are less stratified, more blended and, because of more mobility, regionally blurred.
This became even more acutely apparent to me as my niece notice, with some amusement, wondered where I had come from since I didn't sound or speak like the rest of the family. She said I sounded like no one else, with low voice that is a mix of Southwestern, Southern and Northeastern accents. m/r

Southerners and Gs - Charles C. W. Cooke - National Review Online
Surprisin’ twists in the history of English pronunciation.
AUGUST 25, 2012  bt Charles C. W. Cooke

Americans are not infatuated with class in the manner that the British are, but accents remain consequential nonetheless. How else to explain the Amazing Disappearing G, a trick of pronunciation that, whereabouts permitting, politicians on the campaign trail and beyond are keen to perform? Vice President Joe Biden, during his ignoble allegation that the Republican party has a secret plan to put black Americans “back in chains,” avoided the participial G as if he were fatally allergic.
Were we in the Southern states, Biden’s trick would instead be called the Amazin’ Disappearin’ G, and this has not been lost on any of this year’s presidential contenders. While Mitt Romney has much less of a tendency toward dropping his Gs than does Barack Obama, the Republican candidate is not wholly innocent: Touring the South during the primaries, Romney wished supporters a “fine Alabama good mornin’” and took to asking, rhetorically, “Ain’t that somethin’?” This while pretending to like grits, no less.
Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, why politicians do this is self-evident. But more interesting is why Southerners do it in the first place. The answer is surprising: Actually, Southerners are truer to “original” English voicing than are their G-happy Northern counterparts. Chalk one up there for Biden. Historically, writes Barbara Strang in A History of English, “the more ‘correct’ pronunciation [i.e., the pronunciation of Gs], as it was considered, was in reality an innovation, based upon the spelling.” That is to say that Southerners who are speakin’ instead of speaking are “correct” — insofar as anybody can be right or wrong linguistically — and, by contrast, educated types who disparage the loss of the G are “incorrect” to do so, their admonishments serving only as invitations further to change the very language that they are attempting to preserve.

Who wants stinky? Where Should Ahmadinejad Bunk Down in New York?

Let's find a leaky barge off-shore with rats, bed bugs, pigs and dogs to keep this smelly loon for 'it' to bunk on. It never needs luggage. It never changes its clothes or bathes.

The Rosett Report » Where Should Ahmadinejad Bunk Down in New York?

By Claudia Rosett On August 23, 2012
Plaudits to the watchdog group, United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), which is again tackling the mission of persuading New York City hotels to spurn Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his entourage when they come to Manhattan for the late-September opening of the United Nations General Assembly.  This will be Ahmadinejad’s eighth consecutive year of attending the UN’s annual opening, and in years past UANI has led campaigns to drive him out of the Intercontinental, and the Hilton Manhattan East, and is now calling on the Warwick Hotel — which hosted him last year– to give him the cold shoulder. In a Thursday press release, UANI congratulates [1] an array of other hotels for refusing to provide rooms to the smirking face of Iran’s terror-based regime.
All of which is gratifying, but presents an intriguing question — since it looks quite likely that even if Manhattan hoteliers take a principled stand for U.S. interests, the UN and the U.S. State Department will do no such thing. They will almost certainly insist that regardless of Tehran’s baggage of terror plots, genocidal threats, domestic repression, illicit nuclear activities, and U.S. and UN sanctions, Ahmadinejad will yet again be accorded the full array of  privileges and immunities that the UN is pleased to bestow on all its member tyrants. Ahmadinejad and his retinue will be permitted entry to the U.S., ushered into Manhattan and provided with top-notch security, courtesy of the same U.S. taxpayers whose country and way of life he would like to destroy.
But the question. If New York hotels won’t host Ahmadinejad, then where should he stay?
Maybe he can pitch a tent in Central Park? Fuggedaboutit. The late Moammar Gaddafi made a bid for that when he came to the UN’s annual opening in 2009, the year Libya’s man presided over the UN General Assembly. New York City said no. So did New Jersey [2].
There are plenty of other possibilities, of course. Perhaps Ahmadinejad could offer to deliver another lecture at Columbia University, in exchange for access to visiting faculty housing.

He was bad as, if not worse than Hitler, yet Stalin gets a pass here.

David Calling - National Review Online

Let’s remember the names of the three Russian girls now turning their country upside down — Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich, or more simply Nadya, Masha and Katya. They form a group called Pussy Riot, and staged a “Punk Prayer” on the altar steps of the cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. This involved shouting, “Mother of God, drive out Putin.” No doubt this performance was vulgar, even blasphemous. No doubt too the group’s name and antics are copied from Western pop-folk — I cannot call them artists.  But they were arrested, they have spent the last five months in prison, and now been brought to trial handcuffed to butch female warders who might have come straight from Gulag or even Buchenwald.  In pure totalitarian style, the verdict had been pre-arranged. In 179 trials, Judge Maria Syrova, a Party hack if ever there was one, has given just one verdict of not-guilty. The girls received sentences of two years. Their lawyers said they would appeal, and one of them risked his own future by adding that the girls would not humiliate themselves by begging pardon from “such a bastard” as Putin.
Putin is emulating Stalin in coercing the people, but the difference today is that a good number of them are not afraid of the consequences of open opposition. Outside the court Nadia’s husband declared, “I feel like we have to make a revolution.”  Demonstrations broke out in Moscow and then in New York, Paris, Brussels, Sofia, and other cities. The KGB-like police have arrested a number of opposition activists, for instance Gary Kasparov. One of the White House spokesmen who give the regular impression of being born without a spine, said that he was “deeply disappointed,” while his opposite number in the British Foreign Office was “deeply concerned.” They must just want the laughter to echo round the Kremlin and the dispatch of some champagne to Judge Syrova, for her participation in creating political prisoners once again in the country.
When the Emperor Napoleon ordered the judicial execution of a harmless Duke, Talleyrand  — a diplomat from the days before the lily-livered official creeps of the present — made the unforgettable crack that this was “worse than a crime, a mistake.” The Pussy Riot girls are also harmless, and Putin has made a mistake. Violence is more and more likely to overtake his intention to remain dictator until well into the next decade.

People who won't get hypos cover their bodies with Tattoos - risk infections in U.S. linked to contaminated ink

Not just in the US either. As one who got a tattoo years before there new popularity, it was a painful revelation during the application and so was the lecture from a physician.
The doctor told me, after the fact, in no uncertain terms, how stupid I was in getting one. Risks of infections are always high, no matter how regulated the tattooist was. Then, as now. the risk dangers included all levels of hepatitis, any blood disease and even an outside risk of leprosy. There was still a leper colony on Molokai then.
Over 40 years ago there were few tattoo shops. I had to go to Long Beach, Calif. near the Pike. It was the closest one near L.A. still open in those days. After getting the tattoo and looking in the mirror the next morning, I had the sinking sensation of the permanent personal physical change. It wasn't me anymore, it was as if my old arm was gone, and it was in a way.
That was by no means the end though. As I aged, so did the tattoo. Colors faded, bled together and generally lost definition of lines. It became kind of an old looking shaped bruise.

Tattoo infections in U.S. linked to contaminated ink | Reuters

Aug 22, 2012
* Infections prompted CDC probe
* FDA does not directly regulate tattoo inks
By Gene Emery
Aug 22 (Reuters Health) - Contaminated tattoo ink caused at least 22 skin and soft tissue infections last fall in four U.S. states, according to an analysis released on Wednesday.
The infections prompted an investigation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that uncovered 22 confirmed cases, 4 probable cases and 27 possible cases of contamination-related infections in New York, Washington, Iowa and Colorado.
Products from four companies were implicated during the probe. None of the companies is identified in a CDC report, released in conjunction with a New England Journal of Medicine study of the New York cases.
"People who get tattoos must be made aware of this risk and seek medical attention" if they get a rash or other abnormalities at the site, according to a commentary in the journal from a team led by Pamela LeBlanc of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The bacteria got into the containers when the manufacturer used distilled or reverse-osmosis water, which is not necessarily sterile. In the New York cases, which led to a recall by the Arizona-based manufacturer, the water was used to dilute black ink into various shades of gray.
The New York cases involved infection with a bug called Mycobacterium chelonae, which caused reddish or purple raised bumps in the areas tattooed with gray. The infection can mimic an allergic reaction and be difficult to treat.
