Obamacare: Time for Trump to Make Congress Share Our Pain

The President has the authority to eliminate its illegal exemption immediately.

President Trump, having watched the Senate writhe in protracted labor for weeks without giving birth to even the ridiculous mouse dubbed “skinny repeal,” has taken to Twitter and issued this ultimatum: “If a new HealthCare Bill is not approved quickly, BAILOUTS for Insurance Companies and BAILOUTS for Members of Congress will end very soon!” It would be unwise for Trump’s enemies — on either side of the aisle — to disregard this as bluster. The President not only possesses the authority to follow through on both threats without consulting Congress, he can do so immediately with the overwhelming support of the voters.

Public support is particularly strong for ending the bailouts for members of Congress. This refers, of course, to the special dispensation that protects every member of both houses, as well as the people who work in their teeming staff offices, from the depredations of Obamacare. This exemption was created when Trump’s predecessor directed the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to classify Congress as a small business, and unknown congressional staffers submitted a fraudulent application to the D.C. Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) exchange claiming that the House and Senate employ only 45 people each.

Years ago, I went on my first backpacking trip. I'd done some training hikes, but I live on pretty flat terrain, and the trip was a bit more rugged. By the time I dragged myself back to my campground well after dark, I was exhausted. I'd been exhausted for hours by that point, all because I'd overestimated my ability.

With outdoor activities, it happens. When I was faced with exhaustion, I simply sat down and rested a bit until I felt like I could go on a bit more.

As Heat Street reports, not everyone seems to think personal responsibility is paramount:

A female mountain climber in Sweden called out air ambulance and rescue personnel because she felt tired and wanted a ride back down from a mountain she had scaled.

The woman, who was climbing with her husband near Jokkmokk, just north of the Arctic Circle, contacted the rescue team saying she was unable to walk and couldn’t get down from the mountain without assistance, The Local reported.

After the ambulance arrived to rescue the woman, paramedics discovered that she was just tired.

Unsurprisingly, the rescue service doesn't consider "tired" as a medical emergency. The woman and her husband were advised to either carry their happy butts back down the mountain, or to pay for a ride in the helicopter.

BART officials under fire for withholding crime surveillance videos to avoid racial stereotypes

Officials from BART, the public metro system serving California's San Francisco Bay area, have come under fire for their refusal to release crime surveillance videos, claiming such tapes will promote stereotypes and "stir up racial animosity."

A BART official defended the agency's decision on Monday by saying information about criminal misconduct will be withheld at this time because of the media's "disproportionate elevation" of crimes that "unfairly affect and characterize riders of color," the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The decision, however, has been roundly criticized by at last two BART board members who are calling for greater transparency on how crimes are reported within the system.
Since the cameras were installed in April, a string of cell phone robberies have been reported on board the metro, according to local news outlets.
On April 22, 40 to 60 youths* boarded a train at the Coliseum stop and robbed seven passengers, assaulting two, according to local station KCBS-TV. On June 28, a group of four teens assaulted a passenger and made off with another cell phone.

In line with other jumpy elected officials in jurisdictions below the Mason and Dixon, county commissioners in Hillsborough County, Florida voted 4-2 Wednesday to remove the monument to Confederate soldiers that have stood in front of the Hillsborough County Courthouse in Tampa for more than a century, doing no discernible harm to anyone. Jim Crow was run out of town with the statue in place. But in our ever more difficult search to find remaining vestiges of anti-black racism, the hell-raisers fastened on the statue. And so it had to go.

The statue will be removed from county property and shipped to a private cemetery in Brandon, a suburb of Tampa. Appropriate enough, because any tolerance for appreciation of Southern history is as dead as the statue’s new neighbors. “Old times there are not forgotten,” the song teaches us. But they will be if the hell-raisers have their way.
The same Republican-majority commission voted 4-3 last month to keep the statue. But then the anti-statue crowd began to reason with them. Phone calls, demonstrations, lots of yelling, politicians pandering to their constituencies. Some of the forensic tactics included death threats to a least one commissioner. So, having the matter thus explained to them, four of the seven fell in line Wednesday, as just about anyone paying attention knew they would. The vote came after a three-and-a-half-hour public hearing with both sides well-represented, and all the cheering and jeering one would expect at such a séance. At the end, the anti-statue crowd carried the day. No surprise. Does anyone even remember when a noisy pressure group did not get what it wanted?

Pride is full of placards saying “God is Gay”, “Jesus had two fathers”, as well as those mocking the church and priests and pope, yet CEMB members hold signs saying “Allah is Gay” – as we did – and the police converge to attempt to remove them for causing “offence”.

One may not offend Muslims. Even when the people doing the offending are former Muslims.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Bill Nye "the science guy" suggested that older people need to die in order for everyone else to combat climate change.

"Climate change deniers, by way of example, are older. It's generational. So we're just going to have to wait for those people to 'age out,' as they say," Nye told the Times' Patt Morrison. In case there was any doubt about his meaning, he clarified: "'Age out' is a euphemism for 'die.'"

"But it'll happen, I guarantee you — that'll happen." Ouch.

To make matters worse, he blamed "deniers" for making the issue political.

"I'm not the guy denying climate change. You guys started it. I didn't want to be political," Nye said. Really? The desire for people to die to advance your own political agenda is nearly the definition of a totalitarian.

Here's the thing — the alarmists are exactly the ones politicizing the issue. They want the government involved, whether through job-crushing regulations, installing a carbon tax, or flushing taxpayer dollars to alternative energy companies. God forbid they let the free market solve the issue.

While Hungary opposed taking in migrants "who could change the country's cultural identity," Orban said under his leadership, Hungary would remain a place where "Western European Christians will always be able to find security."

OAKLAND — Four members of a crew filming a television reality show in downtown Oakland were robbed at gunpoint Monday night of $50,000 worth of equipment and personal items, according to a victim and authorities.

The head of the crew said he was thrown up against a wall and that he and the other victims were forced to lay on the pavement, where the two robbers put guns to their heads and threatened them

Chris Burns, 37,  an independent director of photography for the AwesomenessTV production “This Is Summer,” a reality show that follows eight 17-year-olds growing up in the Bay Area, said Wednesday the robbery “was really, really scary.  It’s the most terrifying robbery I’ve ever been a  part of.”

  Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III is yet again expanding the scope of his off-the-rails investigation into the Left’s wacky Russian electoral collusion conspiracy theory by examining financial transactions even vaguely related to Russia involving President Trump’s businesses and those of his associates, Bloomberg News reports.
Honest observers recognize that with the election of Donald Trump, the longtime Russophiles of the morally flexible Left flipped on their traditional friends in Moscow faster than you can say Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact or Operation Barbarossa. Ignoring its own history of rampant seditious collaboration with Russia, the Left has now managed to convince many that any past or present connection a Republican has or had to Russia, however trivial, is somehow now retroactively evidence of treason against the United States.
There is still no evidence that Trump covered up a crime, or even that there was an underlying crime to be concealed but that hasn’t stopped the Left’s witch-hunt from growing and the goalposts from being shifted.
Remember that it was just a month ago as the bizarre collusion allegations got stuck in the mud that Mueller expanded his investigation to include allegations that Trump tried to obstruct justice by firing FBI Director James B. Comey on May 9. The claim is that Trump did this to end Comey’s investigation into National Security Advisor Mike Flynn’s ties to Russia. Of course, as Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz has pointed out repeatedly, the president has authority under the Constitution to fire the FBI director for any reason or no reason at all. Comey himself has freely acknowledged he served at the pleasure of the president.

White Cloud, Mich. — A jury has convicted a western Michigan woman of first-degree murder in the shooting death of her husband in a crime apparently witnessed by the man’s pet parrot.

The Newaygo County jury deliberated about eight hours before finding 49-year-old Glenna Duram guilty Wednesday of killing 46-year-old Martin Duram. He was shot five times in May 2015. Glenna Duram suffered a head wound in what prosecutors said was a suicide attempt, but survived.

Senate budget rules are giving opponents of the rollback of the 2010 health care law an easy way to attack Republicans for hypocrisy.
The Senate GOP may not really want to immunize their own member and staff health plans from their health care policy changes, but because they are seeking to bring their bill to the floor under the expedited budget reconciliation process, they have little choice.
Sen. Ted Cruz has already unveiled a fix to nullify the exemption, but that bill would take 60 votes to overcome any filibuster attempts.
“While this exemption was included in the Senate health care bill out of procedural necessity, we must still be diligent in ensuring that Members of Congress are treated just like other Americans under this law,” the Texas Republican said in a statement. “This is an issue of fundamental fairness. Lawmakers are not above the laws that they pass and I believe that it is crucial that Members of Congress abide by the same laws that their own constituents follow.”

PHOENIX—Migrants who are caught crossing the border illegally for the first time are now facing criminal charges in federal court in Arizona as the Trump administration steps up efforts to deter illegal immigration.
Until recently, first-time offenders were deported instead of being criminally prosecuted.
That changed as of June in the Tucson Sector, which includes most of Arizona’s border with Mexico, the agency said in a news release on Thursday. The new program has led to 565 prosecutions.

The illegal immigrants are charged with misdemeanors and tried in federal court under Operation Streamline, a 12-year-old initiative in which the migrants are charged, enter pleas and are sentenced within a few minutes in large groups.

Tübingen is one of the most charming towns in Germany. Romantic poets like Friedrich Hölderlin and Eduard Mörike and philosophers like Hegel and Schelling once lived there. The historical center was not damaged at all during WW II. Today it is a town of 90,000 inhabitants, of which more than 20,000 are students. They enjoy a much higher quality of life than most Germans. Go there if you want to get a glimpse of how Germany was—and to understand how mass immigration is destroying it.
“Tübingen was one of those towns in which women could move without fear. Unfortunately, this changed,” says Mayor Boris Palmer. The reason has the face of a 21 year old African immigrant who has been arrested on suspicion of rape in at least four cases.
He comes from Gambia and he has no chance of obtaining asylum. Yet he and another hundred African immigrants living in Tübingen have been tolerated for years and years by the authorities.
Sexual assaults in town are conspicuously increasing, wrote Mayor Palmer on Facebook.  He appealed for strict border controls and requested DNA screenings from African immigrants to detect the perpetrators of sex crimes and facilitate their deportation.

So on Thursday, he and another prominent African American pastor filed suit against Coca-Cola and the American Beverage Association, claiming soda manufacturers knowingly deceived customers about the health risks of sugar-sweetened beverages — at enormous cost to their communities.
The complaint, filed in D.C. Superior Court Thursday on behalf of the pastors and the Praxis Project, a public health group, alleges that Coke and the ABA ran an intentional campaign to confuse consumers about the causes of obesity.

What can be said about a snobby man who alienates the riffraff worried that other people’s snobbiness is alienating the riffraff? David Brooks stumbled around in an article yesterday talking about social capital and how it’s wielded to keep those of the lower classes alienated from those of the upper classes. His article was a giggle-worthy exercise in obliviousness. He said this:

Recently I took a friend with only a high school degree to lunch. Insensitively, I led her into a gourmet sandwich shop. Suddenly I saw her face freeze up as she was confronted with sandwiches named “Padrino” and “Pomodoro” and ingredients like soppressata, capicollo and a striata baguette. I quickly asked her if she wanted to go somewhere else and she anxiously nodded yes and we ate Mexican.

American upper-middle-class culture (where the opportunities are) is now laced with cultural signifiers that are completely illegible unless you happen to have grown up in this class. They play on the normal human fear of humiliation and exclusion. Their chief message is, “You are not welcome here.”

Wow. There’s a lot to unpack there. Why do I get the impression that David Brooks is trying hard to fit in with the Important People? Every post like this screams insecurity and encapsulates the problem that Brooks claims worry him. ...
