Hastert La Vista, Baby! :: SteynOnline

by Mark Steyn  Steyn on America May 31, 2015

In its first 72 hours, the Denny Hastert scandal has galloped along at breakneck speed:
~First, it was announced that the former Speaker of the House was being charged with "structuring" - one of thoseconvenient catch-all pseudo-crimes that ensures when the feds can't get you for anything else there's always three checks for $9,750 they can nail you on. In this case, Hastert had been withdrawing small sums of cash in order to pay an unidentified person $3.5 million.
~It shouldn't be a crime to withdraw $3.5 million from your bank account in whatever increments you like. But how does a guy who's been in "public service" his entire life - first as a low-paid teacher, then as a low-paid legislator - have $3.5 million sitting in his bank in the first place? The crime isn't how Hastert got it out of his bank account, it's how it got in there in the first place.
~Be that as it may, what would a guy pay $3.5 mil in hush money for? Well, "Individual A" is said to have known Hastert all his life and grew up in Yorkville, Illinois, where Hastert taught as a high school teacher from 1965 to 1981. Hmm...
~In its first 24 hours, coverage focused mostly on the "structuring" ("Dennis Hastert's Withdrawals Drew Federal Attention. Will Yours?") And then, as they always do, members of the federal prosecutocracy began talking off the record:
Tribune newspapers reported earlier in the day that two unnamed federal officials said that Hastert paid a man from his past to conceal sexual misconduct.

KERRY BREAKS LEG IN BIKE CRASH; ENDS OVERSEAS TRIP EARLY
News from The Associated Press

GENEVA (AP) -- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry broke his leg in a bicycle crash Sunday, apparently after hitting a curb, and scrapped the rest of a four-nation trip that included an international conference on combating the Islamic State group. ...

.... Kerry was taken by helicopter to Geneva's main medical center, HUG, after apparently hitting a curb with his bike near Scionzier, France, about 40 kilometers southeast of the Swiss border.
Paramedics and a physician were on the scene with his motorcade at the time and provided him immediate attention. They quickly decided to order the 10-minute-long helicopter transport.

Carly Fiorina: Big government is crushing Americans

Jon Offredo, The News Journal May 30, 2015
Republican presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina told a packed
audience that a huge, complex and sometimes corrupt government was
"crushing the potential" of Americans.

"That is not hyperbole," she said. "That is
fact."

When democracy becomes so big and powerful, and so costly
and complex, Fiorina said, only the big, powerful, wealthy and well-connected
can handle it.

"The small and the powerless get crushed," she said.

Blog: National Spelling Bee and political correctness

By Thomas Lifson May 29, 2015 -full short post-

The National Spelling Bee has a new winner.  Actually, two winners, in a tie.  Congratulations to Gokul Venkatachalam, 14, of Chesterfield, Missouri, and Vanya Shivashankar, 13, of Olathe, Kansas.  They join winners of recent years, Sameer Mishra (2008),  Kavya Shivashanka (2009), Anamika Veeramani (2010), Sukanya Roy (2011), Snigdha Nandipati (2012), Arvind Mahankali (2013), and Ansun Sujoe and Sriram Hathwar (2014, tie).

Where’s the outrage?
Political correctness holds that every ethnic group is identical in terms of ability and effort, so that any discrepancy in outcomes is the result of discrimination.  (Except in athletics, of course.)  So the
dominance of Indian-Americans must be the result of discrimination.  Or unfairness, such as the heinous practice of reading to your children, thereby unfairly advantaging them.

Given the practices of the Justice Department since the election of President Obama, can an investigation be far behind?

Blame It on Global Cooling? Obama Has Lowest Average 1stQ GDP Growth of Any President on Record

By Terence P. Jeffrey | May 29, 2015

Even if you leave out the first quarter of 2009—when the recession that started in December 2007 was still ongoing--President Barack Obama has presided over the lowest average first-quarter GDP growth of any president who has served since 1947, which is the earliest year for which the Bureau of Economic Analysis has calculated quarterly GDP growth.
In all first quarters since 1947, the real annual rate of growth of GDP has averaged 4.0 percent.
In the seven first quarters during Obama’s presidency, it has declined by an average of -0.43 percent. And if you leave out the first quarter of 2009 and look only at the first quarters of the six years since the recession ended, it has averaged only 0.4 percent.
In the six years of Harry Truman’s presidency for which the BEA has calculated quarterly GDP, the annual rate of growth in GDP in the first quarter averaged 4.5 percent.
During President Eisenhower’s eight years, it averaged 3.2 percent. During Kennedy’s three years, it averaged 4.9 percent. ...

"Triggered by Old Books" is the Lead Paint Issue from Lazy and Affirmative Action Students

Why have Liberal Arts in College At All? Are real, classic Liberal Arts are to be dumped in the trash heap for being "Triggers"? The reason the classics were taught is because they were the original, they have depth and meaning and reflect the same human condition and thought from millennia. They are not easy and require mental ability.

It is bogus to disregard the true classics. But now, student's are too lazy to read and understand them (forget about in Latin or Greek as they were taught less than a Century ago), or they do not have the academic aptitude. The saddest part is, the students are getting away with this scam.

This is as bogus an issue as blaming lead based paint for low IQs in minorities. Lead paint had been part of life for centuries, but when minority children, in general, continued to show lower scores for academics, the real answer that they were not quite as bright became the bogey-man, and the bogus "excuse" of minority children's eating lead paint chips was to blame.

How may tons of lead paint chips are we to eat for us to really believe this nonsense?  m/r

Columbia Students Triggered by Old Books Are the Ones Who Need Them Most | National Review Online

by IAN TUTTLE May 29, 2015

In 8 a.d., Ovid, the poet, the toast of Rome, was suddenly exiled to the remote outpost of Tomis. The reason remains a mystery. Ovid himself said only that his fate was caused by carmen et error — “a poem and a mistake.”

Two millennia later, a new effort to exile Ovid — not from Rome, but from Columbia University’s famed Core Curriculum — could be attributed to the same: carmen et error, where the poem is his Metamorphoses, and the error is that “like so many texts in the Western canon, it contains triggering and offensive material that marginalizes student identities in the classroom. These texts, wrought with histories and narratives of exclusion and oppression, can be difficult to read and discuss as a survivor, a person of color, or a student from a low-income background.” So wrote four undergraduate students earlier this month in Columbia’s campus newspaper, the Spectator. They would like a “trigger warning” affixed to Ovid’s masterwork.

It is safe to say that these students (all members of Columbia’s “Multicultural Affairs Advisory Board,” by the by) overreached. Critics have been many and swift and savage. In her weekly Wall Street Journal column, Peggy Noonan pardoned the students on the grounds that “everyone in their 20s has the right to be an idiot.”

But idiocy is notoriously infectious, and it is not obvious that the obvious rebuttals will suffice. For instance, critics have posed the natural reductio question, namely: If Ovid merits a “trigger warning,” doesn’t Shakespeare? Milton? Chaucer? The Bible? (Yes, yes, yes, and it doesn’t have one already?) But appealing to the power of Great Names — Shakespeare! — or repairing to mockery are sufficient responses only as long as a Great Name has the power to inspire awe, or mockery to inspire shame.

I have been a professional meteorologist for 36 years. Since my debut on television in 1979, I have been an eyewitness to the many changes in technology, society, and how we communicate. I am one who embraces change, and celebrates the higher quality of life we enjoy now thanks to this progress.
But, at the same time, I realize the instant communication platforms we enjoy now do have some negatives that are troubling. Just a few examples in recent days…
No doubt national news media outlets are out of control when it comes to weather coverage, and their idiotic claims find their way to us on a daily basis.
The Houston flooding is a great example. We are being told this is “unprecedented”… Houston is “under water”… and it is due to manmade global warming.
Yes, the flooding in Houston yesterday was severe, and a serious threat to life and property. A genuine weather disaster that has brought on suffering.
Yes, the flooding in Houston yesterday was severe, and a serious threat to life and property. A genuine weather disaster that has brought on suffering.
But, no, this was not “unprecedented”. Flooding from Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 was more widespread, and flood waters were deeper. There is no comparison. In fact, many circulated this image in recent days, claiming it is “Houston underwater” from the flooding of May 25–26, 2015.  ...

That Cessna Flying Over Your House May Be Sending Photos to the Tax Assessor - Bloomberg Business

Would-be gawkers in New York’s wealthy Hamptons neighborhoods are easily foiled by tall, thick hedgerows and long, gated driveways. For a long time, so were tax assessors wanting to check properties with a quick drive-by. Then they found an easy way past all those defenses. They just went over their heads—or specifically, a pilot in a tricked-out Cessna did, with cameras in the plane’s belly and sides taking high-resolution photos of lawns speckled with pools, cabanas, and tennis courts.

The Southampton town assessor used such aerial photos of one of the most highly assessed gated properties in Sagaponack to show the town board how useful the flyover imagery, which cost around $110,000, could be. “We could see everything,” says Lisa Goree, the town assessor. “We could measure every roofline, every structure, the land between the structures. It was amazing.” The town already had the permits for construction done on the property, but the added detail from on high helped send the assessed value of the property from $218 million to $240 million, she says.1

Resource-strapped local governments across the U.S. like how the photos can lead to more accurate tax rolls, greater tax revenue, and a far faster, easier way to assess properties. For an extra fee, counties can use software to compare current photos with prior flyovers. That helps them find potential changes to properties—and a good recent aerial photo can also stop a property tax appeal in its tracks. So while government users of the photos welcome it as a revenue and productivity boon, the impact on homeowners is more mixed.

Baltimore mayor snaps under Fox News grilling; ‘You’re being rude!’ - BizPac Review

May 28, 2015 by

If Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake could only fight crime the way she does Fox News reporters, “Charm City” may once again live up to its moniker.
Don’t expect that to happen any time soon.
At her weekly news briefing Wednesday, Rawlings-Blake faced some tough questions about a surge in violent crime since last month’s riots from Fox News reporter Leland Vittert, and she didn’t like it one bit.

And while Rawlings-Blake may not be accustomed to “aggressive” reporting, Vittert wasn’t about to let that deter him from trying to find out why there has been an increase in crime.
“Is that because the police are doing less?” he asked.
“As I said before, there are a lot of reasons why,” Rawlings-Blake replied.
“Is that one of them?” Vittert interjected. “Arrests are down 50 percent.”
At this point, the mayor paused out of frustration, then said, “I am not 100 percent sure what you are doing.”
“I am just asking a question,” the reported replied.

Baltimore Gets Bloodier As Arrests Drop Post-Freddie Gray « CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (AP) — A 31-year-old woman and a young boy were shot in the head Thursday, becoming Baltimore’s 37th and 38th homicide victims so far this month, the city’s deadliest in 15 years.
The most recent killings claimed the lives of Jennifer Jeffrey and her seven-year-old son, Kester Anthony Browne. They were identified by Jeffrey’s sister, Danielle Wilder.
Jeffrey and her son were found dead early Thursday, each from gunshot wounds to the head.
As family members cried and held each other on the quiet, leafy block in Southwest Baltimore where they lived, Wilder said she felt as if “my heart has been ripped out.”
Wilder said a neighbor called their other sister early Thursday, concerned that she hadn’t hear any noise coming from Jeffrey’s house: no footsteps, Wilder said, no voices, and no gunshots. But when her brother let himself into the house to check on the mother and son, he discovered their bodies.

Blog: Why do gays need a homosexual rodeo?

I love rodeos.  But because I'm heterosexual, I want to make sure that the rodeo I'm going to is a heterosexual one.
How ridiculous does the previous sentence sound?  And yet, homosexuals feel the burning need in their loins to have a rodeo that is just for them, just like the homosexual Olympics and homosexual choirs.  And the media feels a special need to cover them.
I don't think there is a gay way to mount and ride a bull.  There is no gay way to do chute dogging, or mutton bashing, is there?  Team roping and whip cracking don't have any special significance to gays, do they?
So why do gays need their own rodeo?

Only Mexican-born Jorge Ramos would interview me on his Fusion network. Yay, Jorge!

After a spellbinding interview, Ramos ended by asking this excellent question -- which I had suggested myself for all authors, most of whom write very boring books, harming the marketability of my own books: "Is there anything in your book that isn't already generally known?"

Articles: Like Don Draper, Barack Obama Can Never Go Home

by Jack Cashill   May 26, 2015

In watching the seventh season of AMC's inspired hit series Mad Men unfold, I found myself thinking of the Obama presidency, also in its seventh season.  (No spoilers until article's end).
For those who may not have seen the series, the principal character of Mad Men is a sophisticated and self-possessed creative director for a New York ad agency named Don Draper.  In many ways, Draper fits the mold of the American Adam, a highly competent individualist with no fixed past and no set future.  This archetype has been a staple of American expression, from Cooper's Natty Bumpo to Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby to just about every character Clint Eastwood has ever played, some of whom don't even have a name, let alone a history.
Like Gatsby – and, more to the point, like Barack Obama – Draper has invented himself.  Viewers learn early in the first season that he is not really who he says he is.  He went to Korea as a no-account private from a brutally dysfunctional home and assumed the identity of his lieutenant after a fatal accident that he himself caused.  Although usually confident and self-contained, ad exec Draper lives in terror that he will be exposed.
At this stage in his presidency, Barack Obama no longer lives in terror.  The fact that he reportedly spent $2 million or so on attorney fees to keep his birth certificate sealed suggests that he once did.  I am still not certain what it was that he needed to conceal.  As to Obama's grades and test scores, Jimmy Hoffa's body will be unearthed before those are.

Life and Death in the Trenches | National Review Online

by SYDNEY LEACH May 25, 2015

The toll — and legacy — of the Great War.

Today, we celebrate Memorial Day. In the light of this commemoration, we might once again consider World War I and its legacy. As chroniclers of the period have noted, in addition to our political inheritance from the Great War — including the present-day Middle East — that war yielded one of the highest death tolls in history. It also yielded some extraordinary British poetry, even as many of its creators would number among the dead. To bring that war out of the shadow of forgetfulness in which it is sometimes shrouded and to help recall the lost promise of almost an entire generation, Guy Cuthbertson’s biography Wilfred Owen is to be highly recommended. Cuthbertson provides a fresh and insightful portrait of one of the most famous British war poets and corrects some false impressions that have become attached to him.

As war broke out across Europe, in the luminous, still summer of 1914, England mobilized its equally luminous youth. During the course of the war, the British Empire deployed approximately 5.4 million men to fight on the Western Front.

Wilfred Owen was one of them — and he was also one of that small but notable group of British soldier-poets whose artistry and bravery improbably coalesced and came to fruition in the trenches of Europe. In addition to Owen, this group included Robert Graves, Siegfried Sassoon, and Isaac Rosenberg. In this sympathetic biography, the author describes Wilfred Owen’s development from a child in a lower-middle-class family in Edwardian England into a modern poet who would win the admiration and friendship of those well beyond his modest roots.

Little about young Wilfred Owen hinted at the soldier-poet he would become.

Obama's Arrogance born of Ignorance, "and he’s the smartest guy in the room. Just ask him."

One of Meir's most famous statements was her assertion that there was never any such thing as a Palestinian. And while she also said many eloquent things about the horrors of war, at the end of the day she saw the Arabs as implacable enemies of the Jews. This is summed up in her most famous quote: "Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us."
Obama, the Jews, the Muslims, and Us | Faster, Please!

By Michael Ledeen On May 24, 2015

As always, Obama's version of reality is at odds with the known facts. So why do "Progressive" Jews continue to support him?

... So the president isn’t very well informed about Judaism or Zionism, yet he is forever lecturing Jews and Israelis about what is really best for them, as if he had some special insight. It is no accident that Obama is the only American president to write an introduction to the official military Jewish prayer book, prepared by U.S. chaplains. All previous presidents had left such matters up to the rabbinate.

He is forever presenting himself as a great friend of the Jews and a fervent supporter of Israel, Zionism and Judaism. But the “Zionism” he praises is a left-wing version of the original movement, and he chose to give a speech about it at a decidedly leftist synagogue in Washington, whose rabbi — a recently self-proclaimed gay whose wife swiftly divorced him — conveniently blessed Obamazionism: “While he doesn’t speak as a Jew, his progressive values flow directly out of the core messages of Torah, and so he is deeply in touch with the heart and spirit of the Jewish people.”
Obama’s supporters swallow it with hardly a demurral. Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic has called him “the first Jewish president,” and seems to think that Obama’s “Zionism” is heartfelt. Yet when Obama speaks of the Israel that inspires him, it’s clear that his parameters are not religious at all, but either purely political (as when he praises the kibbutzim, a failed agrarian socialist experiment that produced many of the early Israeli leaders), very controversial (Moshe Dayan, who was not religious, who referred to himself as a “Mesopotamian,” and was a celebrated thief of artifacts from the Israel Museum), or totally misunderstood by the president, as Eli Lake has pointed out in the case of Golda Meir.
He isn’t very good on Islam and Muslims either, and he’s positively weird on anti-Semitism. ...

On Climate, Science and Politics Are Diverging | National Review Online

by RUPERT DARWALL May 22, 2015

The good news for global-warming alarmists is that they can pretty much be guaranteed that there will always be something happening somewhere in the world to get alarmed about. “It has been a really bad week for the ice shelves of the quickly warming Antarctic peninsula,” the Washington Post’s resident alarmist Chris Mooney wrote a week ago.  In a few years, a very warm summer will see the Larsen B ice shelf shatter into thousands of smaller icebergs, a researcher told him. However, Mooney did not report that the same team that had detected Antarctic warming also said that the warming had not been reproduced by climate models. “Until the past warming can be properly simulated, there is little basis for prediction that rapid warming will continue in future,” according to the British Antarctic Survey.

Neither does the alarm extend to the total area of ice floating on the seas surrounding Antarctic and the North Pole. There was a sharp recovery from the low recorded in 2012, and global sea-ice area is currently above the 1979–2008 average. The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reckons that Antarctic sea ice has expanded at an average of 4.1 percent per decade since 1979. This slightly more than offsets shrinkage of the larger area of sea ice at the North Pole, which the NSIDC says has declined by 2.4 percent a decade.

Sea ice at the North Pole has long been a focus of alarm. Just after collecting his Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, Al Gore jetted off to the Bali climate conference to declare a planetary emergency, predicting that the entire north polar ice cap would disappear in as little as five to seven years. The Arctic should have been ice-free by last summer.

“Spirit of Poles”: Seven Brothers among the Thirty-Three Who Fought WWII

"And hell was indeed what these women and their boys were fighting. Not only were they battling for freedom in America, but they had a special concern for what was happening in their native Poland. Their beloved nation had been the site of the start of World War II. On September 1, 1939, just one week after the signing of the Hitler-Stalin Pact, the Nazis invaded Poland from the West, followed by the Soviet Red Army invading from the East two-and-a-half weeks later. World War II was on. Over the next several years, Poland’s people would be slaughtered, suffering a higher proportion of death than any country in all of World War II. Poland also had a huge Jewish population, which was corralled into dens of unspeakable evil, such as Treblinka and the Warsaw Ghetto. When the Nazis were finally defeated, Poland’s reward was 44 more years of totalitarian occupation, this time by communists."
Seven Brothers: A World War II Story | The American Spectator

Six Polish immigrant mothers in the Pittsburgh area — 33 sons fighting in WWII

This time last year for The American SpectatorI wrote about the five Bailey brothers of World War II: Dick, Jim, Fonnie, John, and Fred. They were from Western Pennsylvania, my neck of the woods. All served in World War II. We’ve all heard of the Ryan brothers in “Saving Private Ryan” and perhaps the Sullivan brothers in the old black-and-white film “The Fighting Sullivans.” And we know from these movies that the U.S. military resolved to never again take the risk of exposing so many of one mother’s sons to the risk of death in one war.
And yet, there they were, all five Bailey boys. Not one was granted a desk job on the home-front. All five volunteered for combat after Pearl Harbor and all five faced—Europe, the Pacific, Northern Africa; by land, by air, by sea.
Imagine: Five brothers in one war.
I was pretty impressed by this, and still am, of course. So, imagine my surprise when a reader of that column sent me a package regarding his seven brothers who served in World War II. Yes, seven brothers in one war.
“Dear Professor Kengor,” wrote Ted Walters of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, “Your article about the family whose five sons served in WW II was interesting. You might be interested to know about families in Western Pennsylvania who had more than five sons who served in WW II.”
Whoa. Ted Walters had my attention.
“My mother, Stella Pietkiewicz, had seven sons serve in WW II,” he continued. “She had the honor to christen the plane, Spirit of Poles, because she had the most sons who served in WW II.” ...

What else might be expected from following "Snake Charmers"?

The youth of the rich and upper-middle class and especially celebrities were targeted by these not-so-secret mantra hucksters. Devotees gave their youth and money as fanatically unquestioning, devoted followers and proselytizers.
What other long term result could be expected to emerge through the mental cracks other than forms of depression and psychosis? m/r

The dark side of meditation and mindfulness: Treatment can trigger mania, depression and psychosis, new book claims | Daily Mail Online

The dark side of meditation and mindfulness: Treatment can trigger mania, depression and psychosis, new book claims

  • Theory is that techniques help relieve stress and live for the moment
  • But 60% of us have apparently suffered at least one negative side effect
  • Experts: Shortage of rigorous statistical studies into the negative effects of meditation is a 'scandal'

Meditation and mindfulness is promoted by celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow and Russell Brand, who boast of its power to help people put stress out of their minds and live for the moment.
But the treatment can itself trigger mania, depression, hallucinations and psychosis, psychological studies in the UK and US have found.
The practice is part of a growing movement based on ancient Eastern traditions of meditation.
However, 60 per cent of people who had been on a meditation retreat had suffered at least one negative side effect, including panic, depression and confusion, a study in the US found.

Just in time: Anti-Semitism Pile-On, Methodists with Palestinians

A Methodist Boycott of the Holocaust Museum? | The American Spectator

By Mark Tooley – 5.23.15

A church official’s pro-Palestinianism veers off into fanaticism.

Recently a longtime United Methodist official, lamenting that Israel’s Independence Day obscured the Palestinian “Nakba” or catastrophe, urged boycotting the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. until the Palestinians have their own Holocaust museum.
Here’s the quote from Janet Lahr Lewis, “Advocacy Coordinator for the Middle East” at United Methodism’s General Board of Global Ministries in New York, and “Peace with Justice Associate” at the church’s General Board of Church and Society in Washington, D.C., in an article originally appearing in but now seemingly removed from the online weekly newsletter of the latter agency:
Don’t participate in Holocaust Remembrance Day without participating in Al Nakba Remembrance Day. Don’t visit a Holocaust museum until there is one built to remember the other holocausts in the world: the on-going Palestinian holocaust, the Rwandan, the Native American, the Cambodian, the Armenian… You could be waiting a long time!
How nice. Lewis also accuses Israel of having “gone so far as to destroy archaeological artifacts in an effort to wipe out evidence of non-Jewish cultures, except Roman, throughout history in the region.” She also claims that “Israelis of conscience” are quitting Israel, now controlled by an “extremist government” that’s creating “a new Exodus.” Mocking the Exodus story, a defining narrative of the ancient Hebrews, is another nice touch.
But Lewis’s boycott of the Holocaust Museum, and suggestion of “on-going Palestinian holocaust,” is of course far worse....

Gloria Steinem Descends on the Korean DMZ | The Rosett Report

By Claudia Rosett On May 20, 2015  In Uncategorized

To boldly go where Dennis Rodman has gone before.

Gloria Steinem has landed… in Pyongyang. From there she plans to head south and on Sunday lead a group of women’s rights activists in a peace march — pardon me, an “historic” peace march [1](have you noticed that everything done these days in the name of peace is dubbed “historic”?) — across the Demilitarized Zone, from North to South Korea.
Organized by a group called Women Demilitarize the Zone, this march is meant to help end the unresolved Korean War, reunify the peninsula, reunite divided families and nudge North and South toward peace.
As a self-serving publicity stunt, this exercise has already been something of a success. It has netted the 81-year-old Steinem more news coverage [2] than she usually gets these days (though not quite as much as Dennis Rodman enjoyed during his Pyongyang phase). And I think we can safely assume that for the participants in the march, it will be a gratifying tour of some fascinating parts of the Korean peninsula, including the DMZ — during which they can congratulate themselves that they are not only serving the cause of peace, but providing a feminist counterpoint to all those armed men facing off across the Zone. The governments of both North and South Korea have agreed to permit the march; peace events are planned on both sides of the DMZ, and presumably the historic peace marchers will cross the DMZ  along a carefully selected route that will be misleadingly free of land mines.
As Steinem explained her DMZ project in an interview published May 1 in the Washington Post [3]:
“There is no substitute for putting your bodies where your concerns are…in my experience conflicts are far more likely to be solved when people sit down together… you have to be together with all five senses in order to produce the oxytocin that allows us to empathize with each other.”
These are excellent points if the aim is for Gloria Steinem and her co-marchers to enjoy their visit to the Korean peninsula. But they are at best an absurd gloss on the realities of the scene, in which the nuclear-testing missile-building repressive and murderous regime of North Korea maintains one of the world’s largest standing armies, deployed chiefly along the DMZ, with artillery threatening Seoul. The problem on the Korean peninsula is not a dearth of oxytocin, but a totalitarian government in North Korea, facing off against a democratic system in the South. There are plenty of people in both North and South Korea who would like to see the peninsula reunified. The sticking points are, on what terms? Which system prevails? At what cost? Who wins? ...
